In light of the Gr R and 1's informative career weeks last month, we were thrilled to be invited by Laerskool Rooihuiskraal Amptelik & Laerskool Louis Leipoldt to engage with the little ones about a day in the life of a veterinarian. 🩺🦸‍♂️

Drs. Juanè and Tharina truly cherished this opportunity to share their passion and knowledge, witnessing the sparkle in these children's eyes as they eagerly asked questions about their beloved pets. 😍🐾

To make this experience even more unforgettable, we organized a delightful colouring competition in which six kids (three from each school) won a fun prize for their pets, along with the chance for an escorted veterinary tour through our hospital next week.

With over 89 entries, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our clients who participated in the voting. We could never have chosen the winners without your support.

Lalie is back home! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Those who are a part of the Centurion Facebook groups may have witnessed Mrs. Solms' heartfelt and desperate pleas to the public for help in finding their cherished Lalie. She is microchipped and unfortunately got out of their yard by accident.

This family went above and beyond in their search for their beloved furry family member, and we want to honor their unwavering hope and determination! They even enlisted the help of Mike Bolhuis.

After 13 long days and tireless efforts, their precious Lalie is safely back in their arms. They brought her to us for a check-up yesterday, and we are overjoyed to report that Lalie is unharmed. 💕

"Name above all names. Worthy of all praise. My heart will sing, how GREAT is our GOD!!
After 13 days of searching, Lalie was rescued yesterday and is now safely back home!
On 5 August, around noon, Lalie slipped out through our gate in an honest accident—something that has weighed heavily on me since. We began searching immediately, but unfortunately, we initially headed in the wrong direction. It wasn’t until a man on Lyttelton Road told us he saw her being picked up that we realised we need to expand the search area.
We quickly printed posters and posted in every possible group, hoping for any lead. By Tuesday, we had visited every vet in the area and the SPCA, leaving posters and searching for any signs of her. Nearly losing hope, we finally found a camera on Lyttelton and Harvard Road powered by Vumacam. After reaching out, Vumacam kindly agreed to help us.
On Wednesday, a Vumacam employee contacted me with footage of three possible cars. By Thursday morning, we went to their office and identified the car based on the eyewitness descriptions.
We then went to the police station to open a case of theft—not because we believed Lalie was stolen, but to follow the legal process necessary to get police assistance. We traced the registration number of the car, only to discover that the registered owner had passed away, leaving us at a dead end.
On National Women's Day, I reached out to Mike Bolhuis, who quickly launched a project to find Lalie, involving private investigators. Every morning brought new hope, but the nights were the hardest, not knowing where she was or if she was safe.
Determined not to give up, my husband dug deep on Facebook and found a friend of the car’s new owner, who provided us with contact information. However, the car had been sold two years ago, and the new owner’s details were unknown.
On Saturday morning, 12 days after she was picked up, the previous owner of the car, Andries, reached out, offering to search for the car in Atteridgeville. Despite not knowing us, this amazing human took it upon himself to help find Lalie. Though he couldn’t locate the car on Saturday, he promised to return on Sunday.
On Sunday around noon, I received the call we’d been waiting for—they found the car, and the driver confirmed they had picked Lalie up. Empowered by Jesus, two heroes, Andries and Jaques, stepped in. When Andries arrived at the address, the person there would not hand over Lalie. After much back and forth, with my husband and Jaques speaking to him, Jaques went to the police station for help. In true cowboy style, Jaques and an officer arrived, and they retrieved Lalie from the bathroom where she was being kept.
My husband picked her up from the Atteridgeville police station, and we took her to the vet for a checkup—she got the all-clear. While I am thankful she was taken care of and had food and water, it’s clear there was no intention to return her to us.
Lalie is home now, though anxious and shaky, but she is safe.
Thank you to everyone for all you did—every Facebook message, phone call, and WhatsApp. Your encouragement, prayers, and support kept us focused on Jesus, and together, we brought Lalie home!!"

Today, we joyfully celebrate Dr. Juanè!

Dr. Juanè joined the Bakenkop family about six months ago, and she quickly became a valued member of the team. Those fortunate enough to know her can attest to the genuine warmth and compassion she radiates. One of the most touching aspects of her character is her willingness to pause and offer a heartfelt prayer for a patient, colleague or friend in need.

Meet Lexi Henderson, a young female Border Collie who celebrated her first birthday yesterday🎉.

Lexi was brought to Bakenkop Animal Clinic one evening in June after she started vomiting and became very lethargic, which was concerning since Lexi is a very athletic “young lady” who does intense agility training. (Feel free to follow her page to read more about her).

She was admitted overnight for intravenous treatment and stabilization. X-rays were performed and revealed that all her small intestines had shifted to the left side of her chest, adjacent to the heart. This condition can occur due to a defect in the diaphragm known as a diaphragmatic hernia, which may stem from either a traumatic incident or congenital factors. The following morning, she underwent emergency surgery with specialist surgeon Dr. Ross Eliott and senior surgeon Dr. Kristina Lutz.

The surgery was successful, and her owner was greatly relieved to have her vibrant and beautiful companion back. Lexi needed to remain calm and quiet for six weeks following the surgery to ensure proper healing of the delicate muscles. Cage rest can be quite challenging for any household, but Mrs. Henderson adhered to the veterinarian's recommendations. She rented a specialized cage and ensured she spent as much time as possible with Lexi to prevent her from feeling isolated. Together, they spent many hours watching television and enjoyed uninterrupted "pet and owner chat sessions" to strengthen their bond.

Lexi returned for her final check-up last week and received a clean bill of health. She can now gradually resume her agility training and normal activities as an active Border Collie, bringing joy to all of us, as she is truly a special and sweet dog.

On behalf of the entire Bakenkop team, we would like to extend our best wishes for her birthday yesterday. May this year be filled with all the tail wags, enjoyable activities, and good health that you truly deserve!

🐾Loved being around all types of animals and could not imagine following any other career path that did not involve working with animals.
🌳I have always loved nature and the outdoors, growing up I was always playing outside, climbing trees and building mud castles with my brother and cousins. I still enjoy going to the bush and outdoors activities.
🏑 I loved playing sports from a young age and participated in multiple types of sports throughout my school years.

Our Nelson Mandela Day Sterilization Drive 2024 🧡

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Gabby from Embark Photo & Video for spending her 67 minutes at our hospital, capturing our drive on camera.

This year, we have chosen Pretoria Dog Rescue NPC 2015/416285/08 and Sandpaper Kisses - Feral Cats SA as the beneficiaries for our Nelson Mandela Day Sterilization Drive.

At Bakenkop, we have a deep affection for all animals and prioritize community involvement, particularly for those without a voice. Our efforts include assisting stray animals found on the streets and making every attempt to reunite them with their owners. In cases where owners cannot be located, we collaborate with local rescues, such as Pretoria Dog Rescue, who have been a reliable partner in our endeavours.

This past Mandela day we wanted to return the favour by sterilizing, vaccinating, microchipping and supplying tick and flea treatments to some of their rescue pets. We also gathered donations which included blankets, food and pet products.
