THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FERAL AND A STRAY

Many people use the words feral and stray interchangeably. However, there is a distinct difference between the two.

A stray is a domesticated cat who, for whatever reason, no longer has a home.

A feral is a cat who has been born in the wild or has grown up in the wild with little to no positive human interaction.

Interestingly, many stray cats adopt feral behaviour, especially when joining a feral colony.

Life is a struggle for any cat in the wild, even more so for a stray who has to adapt to a harsh life. Their behaviour must change to enable them to stand up for themselves.
Our last four adult rescues were considered feral by our vet. Even I was doubtful about two of them, as they were super aggressive and confrontational.

It normally takes three weeks for a cat to settle, marking the beginning of the assessment and rehabilitation period.

That first meow from a so-called feral is music to our ears. It tells us that the cat is not truly feral, as ferals do not meow. Meowing is a learned behaviour that comes from socialisation and interaction with humans.

A hissing, angry, and fearful cat in a trap can easily be mistaken for feral by anyone, including seasoned trappers. Keep an open mind and don’t be too quick to label a cat as feral.

R200 SPONSORS A CAT’S FOOD

WORLD SPAY DAY

This global initiative, celebrated on the last Tuesday in February, aims to raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering.

Help us make a difference by spreading the word and encouraging responsible pet ownership and kindness towards animals.

Spaying and neutering not only improves the health and well-being of cats but also helps prevent the birth of countless kittens, like the kittens on our post yesterday, who may end up homeless or struggling to survive on the streets.

Join us in celebrating World Spay Day by spreading awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering. Whether it’s through sharing educational resources, helping get your neighborhood cats spayed and neutered, volunteering at our shelter, or making a donation to support our work, every action counts!

MORE INTAKES

Adoptions have been slow this year, and not just for us—it appears to be a problem across all rescues.

Saturday saw us taking in three kittens of varying ages. This follows the previous two weeks, during which we took in a mother and two kittens, as well as two feral kittens. Two weeks before that, we rescued a FeLV-positive kitten and an adult from our local feeding station, along with an FIV-positive male and a stray we helped a homeowner sterilise, who was subsequently left at our vet.

It's tough going, with quarantine challenges due to being overfull from a sudden influx of intakes. We are further strained in terms of staff and financial resources to meet the demands of continuous disinfection, necessary medical care, supplements, and kitten food.

Meet our three newest darlings, all of whom were in dire situations and needed a lifeline. We could not have turned a single one of them away.

You can assist us by:
1. Sharing our adoption posts with friends and family.
2. Not burdening us with public requests to take in kittens or adult cats.
3. Visiting the shelter on a Friday or Saturday to help with the extra workload and give cuddles to our new kittens.
4. Donating towards our numerous extra expenses, with a total of 12 new intakes in less than five weeks.

Our bank balance never dictates who or when we give a haven to—those most in need. The voiceless, feral, abandoned, and positive viral-status cats all share the same need: to be given a second chance.

Every life always matters.

ADOPT MAMALINA

This gorgeous, loving, and confident calico female is under 4 years old.

She has the sweetest nature. She came to the shelter 3 years ago with 8 kittens, 4 of whom were not her own offspring, but she nursed them as if they were her own when they were abandoned at 4 weeks of age.

She has a calm and soothing nature, often choosing a lap to nestle in or making biscuits against one’s chest.

She is well integrated with her 35 foster darlings and would rather walk away from a confrontation than get into a squabble over the catnip mouse. She is playful, interactive, litter trained, and although free-roaming, she never wanders further than the front garden.

If you’re looking for a gentle and calm companion for an older or younger cat, Mamalina would be a perfect fit.
For more information, please reach out to us at [email protected]

An approved application and home check are a part of the adoption process. For cats over 1 year old, an adoption fee of R950 applies. FERAL KITTENS: OPAL AND ONYX

A week ago today, we welcomed these two darlings from our Centurion colony, which we help manage with The Cat Network.

Little Onyx is 100% tame, sociable, and lovable. Opal, although greatly improved, is still found hiding each morning.

With regular stroking, interaction, and being picked up numerous times a day, by dinnertime she appears to be a tame, interactive kitten. However, by morning, the whole process starts again.

Taming kittens takes time, patience, and love to give them the assurance they need to ultimately become adoptable.

If you have time on your hands this Saturday, why not pop round to our shelter and give the gift of love by making a difference?

Together, we always achieve more.

URGENT: Addressing False Rumours About Cleo & Ashley

It has come to our attention that there are rumours and blatant lies circulating about Cleo and Ashley, the sweet cats we are trying to find a home for. Some are falsely claiming that they will be put down at the end of the month—this is absolutely NOT true.

Friends of Ferals is a pro-life organisation. If Cleo and Ashley do not find a home before their current owner moves, they will be coming into our shelter’s care. We are trying to find homes for them because their Dad died, and their Mom is having to make a difficult move into a bedsit where animals are not allowed.

Please help us spread the truth and, most importantly, help these lovely cats find their forever home. If you’re interested in adopting or fostering, reach out today at [email protected]

JAMESON FeLV

We spent 18 nights trapping to get Jameson and continued each night to trap his tuxedo sibling. On night 21, we found the tuxedo sibling at the feeding station, fearful and unable to walk.

Back at the shelter, we washed off the dirt, cut back her fur, and discovered deep dog bites on both rear legs. We rushed the little tuxedo girl, Glenfinn, to Fourways Vet. The attending vet was just amazing, spending more than an hour assessing her thoroughly.

On the advice that Glenfinn's back was broken and due to the severity of her wounds, she was put to sleep—but not before we had the time we needed to say goodbye. Thank you, Fourways Vet, for your genuine care and the considerable discount you afforded us.

Jameson, the only surviving kitten, has tested positive for FeLV. It is heartbreaking that this little girl will have to spend several months in quarantine while on immune boosters. She will be retested every three months, as it is possible that, with a strong immune system, the virus may clear before she turns one year old.

Thanks again to Ben and Anne-Mari for helping with the big clean-up at this new feeding station. And thanks to staff member Sydney for working in the rain, and a big thank you to Moses for the many overtime hours worked each night at my side, trying to get Glenfinn.

A life lost before rescue is felt by all of us who tirelessly tried to get Glenfinn each night for 20 nights. Rest in peace, sweet girl.

Your support for our efforts and passion for saving lives makes all the difference to each life we touch.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS DAY

The idea of this day is simply to make the world a better place by spreading a little light around. This day may have only started in 1995, but kindness has been around forever! Even something as simple as giving someone a smile, or a heartfelt thank you.

Research has shown that the very act of doing something for someone else gives us a chemical high, a higher one, in fact, than if something had been done for us. Hence the term “it is better to give than receive”.

Something to help us this Random Acts of Kindness Day? Why not sponsor one of our cats for the month? Or pop by in person to give our cats some love and attention? Or organise a little cupcake sale at your office to raise funds? Even sharing our posts with friends and family helps to spread awareness, and hopefully find homes for our kittens and cats!

Help yourself by helping others, the smile on their face and yours will prove it’s all worth it!

GORGEOUS TABBIES

Our 6 week old tabby siblings will soon be ready for their new home.

TIN-TIN is a sweet sensitive and lovable male with the most stunning striped patterns. With his large goo-goo eyes, what is not to love about this sweet boy.

TEE-TIN is darker than brother Tin-Tin. This little girl is super busy and loves zoomies. Independent and super active, this little girl would complete any young cat family.

COLONY UPDATE: HENNOPS RIVER

To encourage the newly unsterilised cats, introduced by a neighbouring property, to visit the feeding station more often, we carried out a major clean-up of rubbish, broken bottles, and offcuts of razor wire and other debris.

A huge thank you to our own Anne-Mari and her spouse, Ben, for helping us make the area cleaner and safer for all the cats.

Plastic tub beds are often stolen in open areas accessible to the public. Fortunately, the long property boundary wall allowed us to secure the back of each tub bed against the wall using Fischer plugs. Each bed is insulated with polystyrene, and the lids are cable-tied to the tubs.

Over the past six days, new cats have been seen lazing or snoozing in the shady areas during the day, and the tub beds are being used for sleeping. We need to place at least three more tubs in this area, as there are definitely more cats visiting the station than we initially realised.

In the last week, we have trapped another seven cats for sterilisation. One tame cat tested positive for FeLV and is currently in quarantine at the shelter.

We have named this big 7.3 kg ginger boy Goliath.

Your donation to our Feral Outreach programmes enables us to change and save lives.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAYđŸ’•â™„ïž

Cats are always there for us to keep us company and show us love every day of the year. With that in mind, do something special to show how much you care for your kitty on this holiday.

Why not try showing your cat love in ways they can understand? Taking a nap with your kitty, petting them, and playing with them will all strengthen your bond with your favorite feline.

Just remember to keep your cat safe. There are a lot of holiday dangers for kitties, like chocolate, toxic plants or flowers, attractive gifts that present choking hazards, and more. With this in mind, keep the human gifts for the humans and safely out of the reach of curious felines. Get kitties nice, appropriate treats and toys as gifts, instead!

If you have a cat who loves Valentine’s Day please post a photo in the comments below. We love pictures of Valentine’s cats!

VALENTINE’S DAY IS FOR LOVE, NOT VET VISITS!

As you’re enjoying chocolates and sweet treats this Valentine’s Day, remember that chocolate is toxic to cats! Even small amounts can cause vomiting, rapid breathing, seizures, or worse. Keep your treats safely out of reach, and if your kitty gets into something they shouldn’t, call your vet ASAP.

Show your feline friend some love with cat-safe treats, extra cuddles, or a new toy instead! đŸŸđŸ’•

Our Mission

Main Objectives – S.A.F.E.R Initiative

(1) Sterilization: We advocate the sterilization of all pets. All cats we shelter, help, nurse, rehabilitate and re-home will be sterilized. Adopted kittens under the age of 5 months old, will be sterilized by their parent/parents making a booking with one of our vet’s, when the kitten is of age. Trap Neuter and Release programmes are available when subsided by Corporates, Businesses or the General Public.

(2) Awareness: To create awareness of the plight of ferals through visibility and interaction with the p***c at markets, shopping malls, animal related events or functions and to network with other Cat Rescue Organizations, Corporates and residential Body Corporates and Animal Rescue Organizations.
