MILLO THE HOUSE PANTHER

Millo, the resilient little kitten who captured our hearts, is still looking for his forever home! ❤️

This brave boy was rescued with a disposal cup stuck around his neck, but after some love and care, he’s now thriving at 6 months old.

Despite his somewhat grumpy expression, Millo is the definition of gratitude and affection. He’s incredibly sweet, loves every gentle touch, and shows his appreciation with non-stop purrs. Whether it’s a loving head scratch or a delicious bowl of food, Millo is always ready to soak up the love.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion, Millo might be your perfect match!

Ready to give Millo his forever home? Contact us today!

CATS AND THEIR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

New research is blowing our minds with the discovery that cats use 276 distinct facial expressions to communicate! 😻 These expressions range from playful and friendly to confrontational, revealing that cats are far more expressive than previously believed.

Researchers spent a year studying 50 cats at a Los Angeles cat cafe, capturing everything from parted lips and curled mouth corners to pupil changes and different ear positions. They noticed a fascinating range of expressions, with 45% being friendly, 37% aggressive, and 18% somewhere in between.

One of the most intriguing findings was the “play face,” where cats pull the corners of their mouths back and drop their jaws, mimicking a laugh-like expression shared with humans, dogs, and even monkeys! 😸🎭

What’s more, this study is helping us understand our feline friends in ways we never imagined. From spontaneous interactions to sudden play-fighting, these cats’ faces told stories of connection, mood shifts, and communication that could have major implications for shelters, humane societies, and even technology. Some companies are now working on apps to decode these facial expressions, so you can understand what your cat is really “saying”! 😺📱

What distinct faces does your cat show?

EVIE HAS BLOSSOMED

It took a lot longer than we had expected, but sensitive little souls need more time to come into their own.

Evie has finally risen above her mistrust and skittishness around strangers and has become the most delightful 9-month-old kitten.

With her stunning, long-haired tortoiseshell coat boasting streaks of orange highlights, she truly is remarkable.

INTERNATIONAL HOMELESS ANIMALS DAY

Today is International Homeless Animals Day, established in 1992 to raise awareness about the overpopulation of dogs and cats. This day is a voice for animals who suffer silently, highlighting the need for action and compassion.

Our shelter is home to many cats and kittens dreaming of their forever homes, but sadly, many only know the shelter as home. Overpopulation leaves shelters overwhelmed, unable to rescue more animals in need because there simply aren’t enough adopters.

We also care for feral cat colonies—some residents born feral, others dumped and adjusting to feral life. Feral cats are often misunderstood, but with education, we can help corporates see that sterilized, well-fed cats are not a menace. In fact, they help control vermin and contribute positively to their environments.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Support Sterilization: Ensure your pets are spayed/neutered and support TNR programs like ours for feral communities.

Help Find Homes: Adopt or share our posts to increase awareness across social media.

Raise Awareness About Microchipping: Make sure your pets’ microchips are up to date to help them find their way home if lost.

Support Shelters: Donate when you can or become a monthly donor. We rely on public support for TNR, rescues, and covering the shelter’s overheads.

UPDATE: SAMUEL’S FIGHT

In the past, we have rescued desperate souls who were stronger, heavier, and less compromised than Samuel, yet passed within two days of being rescued.

Our Samuel is probably the thinnest cat I have ever lifted and cradled; I was afraid that my mere touch would cause him pain or discomfort. Yet, his fight to live is nothing short of miraculous.

When visiting him on Wednesday, the clinic staff informed me that he had started eating soft food. He was stronger, a lot more responsive, and willingly allowed me to syringe-feed him recovery milk.

He tested positive for FIV. With 13 other FIV-positive cats in the shelter, he’ll be right at home in the best possible place to care for immune-compromised cats.

With Samuel being extremely underweight for a long period of time, it is now, with the reprieve from pain, hunger, and the cold, that an underlying dormant condition could surface.

Hence, the next 4 weeks are imperative in alleviating any stressors in his new environment and feeding him small, high-protein meals numerous times a day with the necessary supplements.

As of yet, we do not have a total amount for Samuel’s vet bill, as he is due to be discharged today. Please consider donating to Samuel’s medical costs, as well as the special diets and supplements he will need to help him recover quicker.

We are powerless to rescue, vet, nurse, feed, and give refuge to the desperate without public support. Every life matters!

HELP US BUILD A STRONGER FUTURE FOR OUR SHELTER

At Friends of Ferals, we believe in creating strong bonds—both with our cats and with our community. Now, we need your help to build something even more important: a secure perimeter to keep our shelter safe.

Recently, a serious incident occurred when a former employee, who was removed from the shelter, returned intoxicated and assaulted our founder, Charmaine. Despite obtaining a restraining order, he came back and started a veld fire at the shelter. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but this terrifying event has shown us how urgently we need to improve our security.

Thanks to our amazing community, we’ve already raised R10,488! 🙏 But we still have a long way to go. The total cost to fence the 260-meter perimeter is estimated between R120,000 and R160,000. We need these funds to start securing the area closest to our shelter and cattery right away.

How you can help:

Donate: Every contribution brings us closer to our goal.

Connect: If you know anyone in the fencing or security industry, or any suppliers who could help, please reach out.

Together, we can build a safe haven for our 152 rescues and ensure that Charmaine’s incredible work continues. Every donation is a vital link in the chain of protection that will safeguard our shelter for years to come.

Donate today and help us build a stronger future!

MEET KLAUS: A SPECIAL GIRL LOOKING FOR HER FOREVER HOME

If you’ve visited our shelter recently, you might have noticed a grey and white tabby at the front of our main cattery building. That’s Klaus, a kitty with a unique story and an even more unique personality.

Klaus first appeared at an office park during the lockdown in 2020. She wasn’t quite like the other feral cats there—she was less fearful (although she did have her hissy moments) and clearly didn’t fit in with the other strays. It was obvious she was a stray, but she behaved like she had once known a home. She was named Klaus before it was discovered she was a girl. A trip to the vet confirmed her as a spayed female, cementing the belief that she had been someone’s pet at some point.

Despite efforts to find her previous owners through social media, no one claimed Klaus, so she made the office park her home. Over time, with lots of patience and love from one of our shelter directors, Klaus began to open up. She turned into a purring, affectionate kitty who would eagerly wait on the stairs for a friendly human to say hello.

Now, instead of sleeping in bushes, she enjoys the warmth and comfort of a cozy bed at shelter. She does have some allergies and requires special medication, so she can’t indulge in regular cat treats like others.

Klaus would do best as an only cat, as she has a bit of a grumpy side when it comes to other felines. But once she warms up to you, she’s a purring cutie with the most charming raspy meow.

If you think you could be the one to give this special girl the love and care she deserves, please come meet her.

For more information, please reach out to us at [email protected].

An approved application and home check are a part of the adoption process. For cats over 1 year old, an adoption fee of R950 applies.

SAVED TOO LATE

Meet Samuel, our newest rescue, who came in at 7 pm last night.

He is suffering from a severe secondary infection of the mouth, with pus oozing from the corners, accompanied by a terrible smell.

He has enlarged kidneys, his body temperature is low at 33 degrees, and despite all efforts until 1 am this morning, I couldn’t get him hydrated. The once large and full-bodied Samuel now weighs a mere 2.2 kg.

First thing this morning, after his full physical at our vet, he was placed on a drip. If his body temperature does not increase by this afternoon, I will be at his side, holding his head while he is euthanised.

What breaks my heart about Samuel’s condition is that he was part of a fed and ‘monitored’ colony.

Had we got him just a month earlier, we could probably have saved his life.

I plead with feral feeders not to allow the ferals and free-roaming cats in their colonies to suffer. Do not ignore an obvious health issue or take it upon yourself to administer scheduled drugs. This is not the answer.

When you notice one of your cats losing weight, it is the first sign of a serious health issue. The cat should be trapped and taken to the vet immediately.

Our first responsibility as a feeder, trapper, pet owner, independent rescuer, and all those dedicated people in rescue organisations is to prevent an animal from suffering.

We can do better... we must do better for the sake of the innocent, sentient beings who depend on our compassion and love.

WHEN DO CATS COME INTO SEASON?

Cats can become sexually mature as early as 4 months old! This is why it is so important to get kittens spayed or neutered at this age to prevent them from becoming pregnant. From 4 months, female cats will experience heat cycles, showing signs such as restlessness, calling, and lying down with their rear ends raised. This can last a couple of days and reoccur every few weeks once breeding season starts.

While this can happen year-round, breeding season typically kicks in with increased daylight hours as we move towards spring. This signals warmer weather and, generally, more availability of food for the mother to provide for her kittens.

Cats have short reproductive cycles, with pregnancy lasting only 9 weeks, and females can come back into season just 6 weeks after giving birth. This means there is the potential for a huge number of kittens being born in a short period. Since cats can have litters of up to 9 kittens at one time (with an average of 4-6 kittens), the number of cats and kittens needing homes during the summer months can reach crisis levels for shelters!

So please spay and neuter your cats to help prevent these crisis-level cycles this year and in the years to come.

HELP US SECURE FRIENDS OF FERALS

Our post dated 29 July, highlighted the urgent need for secure fencing and measures to ensure the safety of our beloved rescues and shelter, including outdoor lights, security beams, infrared cameras, and smoke detectors. A total of R10,488 has been raised so far. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far.

A huge thank you to Judith David for generously offering to cover the entire expense of the outdoor lights, two motion infrared cameras, smoke detectors, an alarm with outdoor passives and a siren, as well as the added bonus of infrared lights to keep our darlings warm. Judy has spared no expense in ensuring that state-of-the-art surveillance equipment and an alarm system are installed, covering all bases to protect the safety of our rescues and shelter.

The total area around the shelter that needs to be fenced is 260 metres. We still need 2.4m or 3m steel poles (approximately 58) and are exploring various options for the actual fencing. The total cost is estimated to be between R120,000 and R160,000.

While we have made some progress, we still have a long way to go in terms of raising the necessary funds. We urgently need your help to ensure the safety of our rescues. Please, please consider donating to help us reach our goal.

As funds are donated, we will begin fencing the area closest to the shelter and cattery, and extend outward from there.

Please network with friends and family who are in the fencing or security industry, or any suppliers or manufacturers who might be willing to donate or offer us a significant discount.

R200 SPONSOR A KITTY

The purpose of our weekly SPONSOR A KITTY campaign is to raise funds towards our R19,800 monthly cat food bill. However, at R100 per kitty, we’ve only been able to raise about R4,000 a month.

To help alleviate the increase in the price of cat food and average the cost of feeding one cat, including special diets which a number of our rescues are on, it has become necessary to increase the sponsorship to R200 per cat, per month. To the few supporters who have a scheduled payment of R100 per month - thank you so much. It really helps.

We hope this increase will raise at least half of the R19,800 monthly food bill.

Check through the 10 cats today or check out the 40 cats featured on Facebook and choose the face you fall in love with.

When doing your EFT, use the cat/cats’ name(s) as a reference so we can keep track of who still needs a sponsor. Any cat sponsored more than once in any week will have the extra sponsorship(s) given to a shelter friend/friends. For SnapScan payments, message us to let us know who you are sponsoring.

Our monthly cat food is our greatest expense. We are appealing to you to open your hearts by helping us meet the expense of our most basic need, cat food, by sponsoring a kitty’s food for just R200 for the month of August.

Every donation helps towards buying the next bag of kitty food. Thank you for your kind support.

NEW INTAKE: CHARLOTTE

A big thanks to Nikita and family from Centurion for contacting us about this teenage kitten, who had what appeared to be a collar around her neck with her left leg through the collar, restricting her head movements and ability to walk properly.

Once at shelter, we dealt with a very distraught and fearful soul but eventually managed to cut through the thick, condensed foam ring. Lighter in picture for size reference. It appears to be an air conditioner seal.

She is too feral to allow a full body inspection of the left leg but is putting weight on the foot. We hope that the tightness of the ring did not restrict blood flow to the leg, as she probably had the ring around her neck for a while, with evidence of tooth marks where she had tried to chew through it.

She probably used her paw to try to pull it off her neck, and that is how she got her leg through the foam ring.

This is a reminder to us once again how dangerous and life-threatening trash can be to an animal. Please consider breaking the walls of plastic and foam disposal cups, the handles of plastic bags, and flattening discarded tins.

Your thoughtfulness can prevent a tragedy from happening to an animal.

ADOPT A KITTY OR TWO OR THREE

Whether you’re looking for a single furry friend or a dynamic duo, Wasilla, Deacon, and Devan are sure to fill your home with happiness. Now 7 months old, they are eager to find a forever home. Are you ready to make a lifelong connection with one (or more) of these sweet kittens?

WASILLA - Our formerly feral beauty, Wasilla, has surprised us all by taming up so beautifully. She is gentle yet feisty and knows exactly what she wants. Wasilla loves her food and is always the first to meow up a storm when she hears the food bowls placed on the counter. With her stunning coat and gorgeous eyes, she’s a sight to behold. This playful girl will bring joy and excitement to your home.

DEACON - Calm and engaging, Deacon is a sweet-natured kitty. He has a delightful humorous streak that will keep you entertained. If you’re looking for a calm, engaging, and slightly mischievous companion, Deacon is the one for you.

DEVAN - This super long-haired male boasts the most gorgeous tabby swirls through his ginger coat. Devan’s early life was tough, and as a result, this gentle boy took a bit longer to tame and socialize. However, he warms up to those who make the effort to bond with him. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who appreciates patience and love, Devan is the perfect choice.

For more information, please reach out to us at [email protected].

An approved application and home check are a part of the adoption process. For cats under 1 year old, an adoption fee of R1250 applies. This fee covers their vet care expenses, including initial and booster vaccinations, rabies shots, deflea and deworming treatments, FIV and FeLV tests, microchip, and sterilization.

SHELTER DAYS: FEEDING

Feeding our 152 cats a hot treat once a week is a task that involves all staff. And Flicker’s supervision 😉

Every Wednesday, our shelter rescues either get chicken breasts or hake fillets at 4 pm.

Saru, our head caregiver and second mommy to our cats, is seen laying out bowls and dishing up hake fillets with two packets of Royal Canin kitty formula added in and a little cornstarch to thicken the yummy gravy.

The same amount of bowls are washed, rinsed, and then dished into another two times to ensure each kitty gets their own bowl.

A huge thank you to Judy David from Cats Galore for always remembering our cats and supplying the hake and chicken breasts each and every month.

Compassion and generosity make a difference in the lives of our rescues. Thank you, Judy.

Our Mission

Main Objectives – S.A.F.E.R Initiative

(1) Sterilization: We advocate the sterilization of all pets. All cats we shelter, help, nurse, rehabilitate and re-home will be sterilized. Adopted kittens under the age of 5 months old, will be sterilized by their parent/parents making a booking with one of our vet’s, when the kitten is of age. Trap Neuter and Release programmes are available when subsided by Corporates, Businesses or the General Public.

(2) Awareness: To create awareness of the plight of ferals through visibility and interaction with the p***c at markets, shopping malls, animal related events or functions and to network with other Cat Rescue Organizations, Corporates and residential Body Corporates and Animal Rescue Organizations.
