A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US
At Friends of Ferals, we are a pro-life, non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the plight of feral cats in and around Centurion. With the feral cat population at an all-time high, itâs more important than ever to take action. Did you know that one unsterilized female cat and her offspring can produce up to 60,000 cats in just five years? Many of these cats live short, painful lives, facing starvation, disease, and cruelty.
Our mission is driven by the S.A.F.E.R. Initiative:
đ Sterilization: Trapping and sterilizing feral cats to control their population and improve their health.
đ Awareness: Educating the public about the feral cat crisis through events and partnerships.
đ Feeding: Organizing feeding programs to ensure sterilized ferals get regular sustenance.
đ Education: Teaching all ages about the importance and care of cats, dispelling myths, and promoting responsible pet ownership.
đ Rehabilitation and Homing: Providing shelter and medical care for sick or injured ferals, and finding homes for adoptable cats.
We are a small organisation, a lot of what happens is all through Charmaine, so when we say we cannot continue our work without your help and support, we mean it! Together, we can make a difference. Join us in creating a safer, kinder world for cats. đ

RESCUE WITHOUT BORDERS
When we took Jakes in from a TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return) organisation after seeing a photo of a severely emaciated kitten with numerous undiagnosed health issues, we didnât know if we could save his lifeâbut we knew we had to try.
We were shocked to learn that the skinny, long-legged, 12-week-old kitten was, in fact, almost six months old. Jakes was fast running out of time as his frail body struggled to develop.
The time, effort, and money spent on Jakesâ biopsies, vet consultations, bloodwork, and scans is irrelevant when one witnesses how happy, healthy, and whole he is today.
We have been criticised that the money spent on Jakes could have sterilised a large feral colony. And why did we not consider euthanasia for abandoned Bradley, who suffered a broken pelvis and several severe dog bites?
Is this who we areâthe human raceâthat the sick and injured should simply be euthanised? My concern is the consensus that we should be selective about whom we rescue because there are so many healthier cats out there needing help.
It is an attitude of cold indifference, a result of accepting that thousands of healthy cats are euthanised in our country every single day. Just because it is âthe way it isâ doesnât make it right, and it shouldnât mean that we simply accept it. We should feel deep sorrow, and at the very least discomfort, that so many healthy cats die every day because we have failed them.
No, we canât save them all... we canât even save enough to appease our conscience of âthe way it isâ. But each ill or injured life we rescue will be given the chance to be whole again.
Please donate to help us save the persecuted, abandoned, and unwanted.

HAPPILY HOMED: APRIL AND MARCHĂ đđž
From Jolene:
Our journey with Friends of Ferals began on 16 July 2022 when we attended the Feral Kitten Day. Our hearts were still heavy after losing our beloved cat, and we needed some kitten love. We met the little ones, all named after the months of the year: Janubell, Febby, MarchĂŠ, April, June, Juliana, and Augustus. Although some of the babies were very shy, we immediately fell in love with little April, who just wanted to escape the kitten enclosureâa true adventurer at heart. As we had four other furbabies at home, we decided not to adopt at the time, as we were certain that all of the kittens would find good homes.
In April 2023, we saw a post titled âAdopt April in Aprilâ, and that was it for usâApril was coming to her forever home. Charmaine had raised these kittens with so much love and affection that the âteenagerâ we met almost a year later was so lovable and such a cuddlebug, you wouldnât guess she had been raised in a shelter. On the day we went to pick up April, we heard that some of Aprilâs siblings were still there and that she and MarchĂŠ were quite fond of each other. Needless to say, we came home with April and MarchĂŠ that day. If they arenât on top of the cupboards, they are playing in the garden. They are loved, adored, and having the time of their lives.
We want to encourage those looking to adopt not to only opt for a kitten. The teenagers and older cats have just as much love to give. When you see them playing, you see that little kitten who has blossomed into an individual with a unique personality. Each one of them is truly special.
We want to express our gratitude to Charmaine and everyone involved at Friends of Ferals for making a difference in these furbabiesâ lives. Our hearts are full.

HAPPY MONDAYS
This is what we do... Transform lives... one life at a time.
Remember Caleb (renamed Sully), who came to us from another rescue organisation. He was severely malnourished and had gut and digestive problems. It took us over three months, many vet consultations, and numerous tests to get this sweet boy well.
Thanks to Dad Fabian for keeping us updated on Sullyâs progress and for the stunning photos of their son.
We accomplish more together. Thank you to every supporter and donor for making it possible for difficult cases like Sullyâs to have a happy ending.

WE THANK YOU, BRADLEY THANKS YOU
Our sweet Bradley came home to the shelter on Thursday. He had not been eating on his own in hospital, and our vet attributed this to the trauma he had suffered.
His temperature spiked again, and he went in on Tuesday for the third operation to remove necrotic fat. Dog bite wounds are more severe and difficult to treat in animals who are chonky, as there is more flesh and fat, which becomes necrotic compared to slender animals.
A huge thank you to every compassionate person who donated towards Bradleyâs numerous operations, including the femur head amputation, as well as his bloodwork, hospitalisation, and intensive nursing.
We have settled his vet bills in full and have R2900 extra, which would have been used for his physiotherapy. These funds will now be used to pay towards his latest operation. He is on a drip and will remain in hospital until his temperature returns to normal.
Itâs been a difficult case for me to deal with emotionally. Abandoned by his owner with a fractured pelvis, then being unable to run away from the dogs who attacked him, all because his owner didnât care about him or care what horrific incident could have ended his life. Bradley has put up such a brave fight.
In spite of his human failing him and the trauma and pain he has endured, he remains so lovable and is just the sweetest boy.
There is so much we can learn from this resilient, good-spirited boy. Two and a half weeks later, Bradley is not out of the woods yet, and we are hoping and praying that this last operation will finally set him on the road to a full recovery.

BECOME A KITTY ANGEL
To be honest we canât do as much as we do without YOU!
We rely on public support to help us through each month with whatever comes our way. Whether itâs preparing for kitten season by making sure we can TNR as many cats as we can, or making sure all our cats are vaccinated, fed, and healthy, or simply keeping our lights on, we need help in doing so.
You can become a kitty angel today by becoming a monthly donor. From as little as R90 a month you can help us cover many of our monthly running costs, without breaking the bank.
Please consider setting up a recurring eft to help support us in caring for our cats.

OSCAR FINALLY SETTLED
Oscar was rescued four months ago and, although he did not display any feral behaviour, he was extremely fearful of humans.
If anyone extended an open hand towards him, he would cower in a corner. We have no idea what his history was or how he came to be abandoned, but the telltale signs of numerous scars tell us he had a hellish life.
Oscar will not be up for adoption until he has regained his self-confidence and emotionally healed from his past.
We can only change fearful lives into friendly cats with love and reassurance. Rehabilitation takes time, and without public support, we would not be able to offer cats like Oscar a safe haven for as long as they need it.

Our Special Jakes
OUR SPECIAL JAKES: UPDATE
It's been nearly 5 months since we introduced our sweet Jax (renamed Jakes), a severely malnourished, underweight kitten with numerous unknown gut problems. He was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease and placed on a special diet. We were told his extended belly would subside in size as he recovered from the malnourishment.
However, there was no improvement in his extended belly or loose stools as each week passed. We were referred to Lamamoor Vet, where he had a gut biopsy, stool and blood tests, and a scan. It was so disappointing to be told by the vet that every organ in his small body was enlarged. The reason was a complete mystery. Jakes remained a happy and loving boy, but the diagnosis was a hard blow as it meant he had a short life expectancy. Further tests revealed that Jakes suffered from a rare parasite called Tritrichomonas.
Intense treatment started, and daily we could see his extended belly subsiding in size. It was at this time we noticed he was walking with his back legs bent and apart in an attempt to remain balanced.
We were then told that Jakes had dislocated kneecaps. It is thought that his kneecaps dislocated due to not having sufficient muscles in his back legs to carry his body weight.
Our Jakes now needs a consultation at the Johannesburg Specialist Hospital to have the dislocated kneecaps graded to determine the severity of the problem and the probability of surgery. (We will obtain a quote at the time of the consultation.)
Many will criticise us for our inexhaustible efforts and the amount of money we have invested in Jakesâ journey to full health. At what stage should we have given up on a loving, interactive, and happy kitten who deserves to be whole and healthy?
