3 AMAZING REASONS TO SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR CATS

Once being spayed and neutered, they less hormonal and thus are calmer and friendlier, and less likely to roam and get into fights.

Once being spayed and neutered, they are less likely to get certain types of cancers, such as prostate and ovarian cancer.

A big one…. If you prevent unwanted kittens from being born, you help reduce the number of cats that ultimately end up in shelters.

And don’t be fooled, cats can breed quickly!

Which is why we never adopt out a cat without being sterilised, or for small kittens, having a sterilisation plan in place once the kitten is old enough. It’s also why we advocate for TNR (Trap Neuter Return) in feral colonies. The colony might start with a few cats, but unless there are responsible people to help care for the cats and control the situation, there will soon be MANY cats.

SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE IN CATS

It’s been really hot lately, and chances are if we’re feeling hot, then our cats are too!

Here are some of the common signs of heatstroke, so you know what to look out for.

Restless behavior - do they look distressed with trying to find a place to cool down?

Slight panting - is their breathing shallow and rapid?

Sweaty paws - yes, cats sweat through their paw pads!

Drooling - if your cat doesn’t normally drool then it’s definitely a sign that something is off with your cat.

Excessive grooming - grooming with their damp tongues in hot weather usually helps cats cool themselves down, so excessive grooming might be a desperate plea.

If you spot these early signs, then make sure to get your cat to a cool, quiet place, and be sure they have plenty of water. You can even help cool them down with stroking them with a damp cloth.

If the situation gets worse, then the panting will increase, the gums will either show as dark red or very pale, they’ll become very lethargic, and may even vomit or collapse. If you see these signs, try cool them down by placing them on a wet towel or blanket and take your cat to the vet immediately.

FESTIVE SHELTER DAY THANK YOU

A big thank you to the families and individuals who, despite a heatwave, came to support us on Saturday.

Our kittens were cuddled and loved, and our adult cats received loads of affection and attention. Thank you to those who supported our ongoing Cat Food Drive with bags of dry food and a pyramid of quality tinned food.

It takes numerous helping hands from volunteers to make any shelter day a success. A huge thank you and appreciation to our committed couple, Anne-Marie and Ben, for carrying the day by fulfilling all the main duties, such as serving as Braai Master, meeting and greeting, manning the sales and refreshment tables and card machine, overseeing disinfection protocols, and taking photos of the day.

Thank you, Zahra, for helping during our busy lunchtime and assisting with packing up at the end of the day.

A special mention to Lize for her generous support of our pet sales. Thanks to Zarina and family for making the trip from Krugersdorp to share the day with us.

Every visitor and supporter contributed to making the day a huge success. We raised R5,450, which helps tremendously towards our last cat food order of the year.

We can only save, change, and rehabilitate lives with the support of caring and generous supporters. Thank you so much.

GIVING TUESDAY

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

And so, we ask you to participate in Giving Tuesday for the voiceless, for the cats in our care.

There are many ways to give:

* Give your time or talent: volunteer at shelter, or give your skills to help with fundraising and adoption
* Give your voice: speak up for TNR and steri drives, get your businesses or communities involved
* Give money: donate or fundraise
* Give goods: donate cat and kitten food or other supplies off our wishlist
* Give kindness: be kind to cats, spend time at our shelter, adopt a rescue cat or kitten

Whatever you do, be proud to give this Giving Tuesday.

DANGEROUS CHRISTMAS PLANTS

CHRISTMAS TREES - Other than the danger of ingesting ornaments or tinsel, the tree itself can also be a problem for your cat. While real trees are less common, beware of potential dangers. If eaten, tree needles can lead to intestinal issues, and needle oils may cause irritation, vomiting, and liver damage.

Fake trees can also pose a risk if your cat ingests plastic, causing upset an stomach or blockages.

POINSETTIA - Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are mildly toxic. While it may not be lethal, the sap can still irritate your cat’s mouth and esophagus, leading to upset stomach and vomiting.

MISTLETOE & HOLLY - Watch for spikes on holly leaves, and toxins in mistletoe and holly berries. Ingestion can result in vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and low blood pressure.

LILIES & AMARYLLIS - Flowers, leaves, and bulbs of lilies, narcissus, and daffodils are toxic. Ingestion may cause vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea. Bulb consumption can lead to serious issues like cardiac problems, kidney failure, convulsions, or death.

Monitor your cat’s interest in these plants or keep them out of reach. If you suspect your cat has eaten any, contact your vet immediately.

R200 SPONSORS A CAT’S FOOD FOR A MONTH

Up to now we have only had 15 of our shelter rescues sponsored for November.

Cat food is our biggest monthly expense which is in access of R21 000. We dont have any cat food suppliers donating a single bag or able to offer us considerable discounts even when buying large quantities.

In an effort to raise awareness and meet the need of our rescues we also have a Cat Food Drive through the holiday season. So if you prefer to order cat food online and have it delivered straight to our door that too would be a tremendous help.

Please share and let us get all 10 of our darlings featured today sponsored for just R200 a cat. Every donation helps towards the next bag of food.

Cat Food Brands we accept: Montego Classic, Monty and Me, Whiskas, Pamper, Ultra Cat, Iams, Nutriphase, Nutribyte, Hills, or Royal Canin

THE HEART OF RESCUE

As the year draws to a close, we reflect on each rescue we have provided with shelter, love, food, veterinary care, and nursing. Since January 2024, we have taken 66 cats and kittens into our care, of which we sadly lost six precious lives. We also mourned the loss of two of our long-residing shelter rescues.

Ask anyone involved in rescue work which is the toughest month of the year, and they will unanimously agree it is December. More pets are abandoned in December than in any other month. Other challenges faced by rescue organisations and independent rescuers include gaining access to business properties, which close during December, to feed feral colonies. Many vets who support rescues also close over Christmas and New Year, making it harder to take a sick feral or rescue animal to a vet who offers rescue rates.

For those not involved in rescue work, Christmas and New Year is a time for family to come together from near and far to share cherished memories and create new ones. It’s a time for holidays at the seaside, in a game reserve, or on a spoiling vacation abroad. For us in rescue, however, it is a time to remain on high alert, ready for the phone call from a feral feeder or security guard reporting yet another litter of kittens abandoned at one of our feeding stations. It is the time of year when, heartbreakingly, we often have no capacity to help the public by taking in even a single kitten or cat.

With sincere hearts, we thank each rescue organisation and independent rescuer for your dedication and commitment to making a difference to every life you save and every mouth you feed, come rain, sunshine, or the silly season. Thank you for persevering through tears and broken hearts when you thought you lacked the strength to continue. Thank you for being the Heart of Rescue. Together, we always achieve more.

MEET KLAUS: A SPECIAL GIRL LOOKING FOR HER FOREVER HOME

Klaus first appeared at an office park during the lockdown in 2020. She wasn’t quite like the other feral cats there—she was less fearful (although she did have her hissy moments) and clearly didn’t fit in with the other strays. It was obvious she was a stray, but she behaved like she had once known a home. She was named Klaus before it was discovered she was a girl. A trip to the vet confirmed her as a spayed female, cementing the belief that she had been someone’s pet at some point.

Despite efforts to find her previous owners through social media, no one claimed Klaus, so she made the office park her home. Over time, with lots of patience and love from one of our shelter directors, Klaus began to open up. She turned into a purring, affectionate kitty who would eagerly wait on the stairs for a friendly human to say hello.

Now, instead of sleeping in bushes, she enjoys the warmth and comfort of a cozy bed at shelter. She does have some allergies and requires special medication, so she can’t indulge in regular cat treats like others.

Klaus would do best as an only cat, as she has a bit of a grumpy side when it comes to other felines. But once she warms up to you, she’s a purring cutie with the most charming raspy meow. We weren’t too sure off her age when she first came to us, but the vet estimates her to now be around 7 or 8 years old.

If you think you could be the one to give this special girl the love and care she deserves, please come meet her.

For more information, please reach out to us at [email protected].

An approved application and home check are a part of the adoption process. For cats over 1 year old, an adoption fee of R950 applies.

ADOPT A SENIOR PET

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month, which helps raise awareness for those older pets that are often overlooked for adoption.

Yes, kittens are cute, but have you considered a lovely senior kitty? These older felines are already experienced in being the perfect housemate—no climbing curtains or late-night zoomies here!

💖 Why adopt a senior cat?
* They’re often calm and cuddly, perfect for snuggling.
* You know their personality right away—no surprises!
* Most importantly, senior cats have a low adoption rate and they so deserve a second chance at love.

By welcoming a senior cat into your home, you’re not just gaining a companion; you’re giving them the gift of a happy, comfortable life. 🏡✨

Main Objectives – S.A.F.E.R Initiative

(1) Sterilization: We advocate the sterilization of all pets. All cats we shelter, help, nurse, rehabilitate and re-home will be sterilized. Adopted kittens under the age of 5 months old, will be sterilized by their parent/parents making a booking with one of our vet’s, when the kitten is of age. Trap Neuter and Release programmes are available when subsided by Corporates, Businesses or the General Public.

(2) Awareness: To create awareness of the plight of ferals through visibility and interaction with the p***c at markets, shopping malls, animal related events or functions and to network with other Cat Rescue Organizations, Corporates and residential Body Corporates and Animal Rescue Organizations.
