We need your help please 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
On 14 August fire broke out in the main house at the shelter. Andre’s room was the worst affected, and he has been sleeping in this room with fire damage since then.
Three days later, dam burst its bank and flooded the shelter & surrounding area with knee deep water gushing through the area. The next day the SPCA came to the shelter & then were back four days later with a seize order.
Andre is in his early 70s, with severe chest issues, who has dedicated his life to the animals. He lost all his personal possessions in the fire as well as his beloved Lucy, and then dear little Rouge a week later.
Emphasis was put on saving the dogs and all focus on repairing Andre’s room was lost in the ensuing mayhem.
We are urgently appealing for help to repair the structure of the house… primary need is seven (7) rafters 113cm x 34cm x 6m and eight (8) beams : 70cm by 45cm x 6m.

Funding is virtually non existence right now and contrary to media reports, funding has not been misused since the new team stepped not long before the fire.

Mika, fondly known as Pirate, is needing urgent surgery. She has a lump that has been growing rapidly that needs to be removed. Village Vet Atlantis has quoted R3-4000, if no complications… and as you all know, our funding is non-existant since the media attack on our shelter.. 😢
Village Vet does not allow donors to pay directly to them (you’re welcome to call them to confirm this), so we’re begging for funding to help this little girl to be paid into our acoount.
We can only help them with your support 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
She’s an absolute bundle of energy and the sweetest girl, only about 5 years old, and really needs this surgery done asap.
(This lump was not evident when the dogs were examined by the vet recently).

It’s that time of the month again… we’re really needing your help to get through the month…
To say it’s been rough is an understatement! But we have one priority- and that is the well-being and future of the animals in our shelter.

Most importantly, our dogs need to be fed… they’re all beautiful healthy dogs who have been through so much trauma the past two months.. the least we can do for them right now is keep their bellies full 🙏🏼

How do you fix something that is broken?
You get involved heart and soul and do everything possible to change it…
That’s exactly what a handful of people with compassionate hearts did!!

There is no denying that the broken was bad.
There is also no denying that now, as we look into the eyes of the 120+ sentient beings left at the shelter, that we are responsible for their future. And we are doing everything possible to ensure that they are given the best chances going forward.

It’s very easy to sit behind a keyboard and criticise or cause damage.
It takes real commitment and heart to put your all on the line to make a real difference. We cannot thank those who have chosen the latter for their support, for us, for the animals at the shelter- and the future of the animals in the nearby communities who depend hugely on HAWK for help.

The mission now continues to fix the broken despite the odds. Legal compliance is near impossible given the circumstances, yet every day dawns with new hope for the lives of those dogs. And the 1000% commitment of those who really care continues.

We have received further warning from SPCA after a visit to the shelter on 30 August 2024. This, following the court order instruction to have all the remaining animals at the shelter vet-checked by 29 August. The 7 day notice period included a weekend and two days of intense storms, making the roads further inaccessible. Despite that, this was accomplished with a last minute vet found, at a cost of R70 000.

Estimated costs of vet treatment & medical requirements - as stipulated in the court order & subsequent warning - is in the region of R200 000. Funds we do NOT have right now.

All dogs at the shelter have been checked by a veterinarian as directed by the SPCA.
This was made a little more complicated due to the horrific storm that hit the area on Monday and Tuesday .. but we did it !!!

This is not the full invoice- nor does this cover the medicinal or veterinary treatment needed for some of the dogs.
We are processing through all the adoption/foster requests as fast as we can … it goes without saying that Homechecks will be done and proper procedure followed ..
We’re about R200 -R300 000 short at this stage for funds to comply with the vetting needs as set out by the SPCA. First stage involved about R100 000 by 3 September. Also would be needing assistance to transport some of the dogs to the vet by 3September.

Please- to all those messaging and whatsapping - we are not ignoring you.

The tiny core team all have jobs, and have been stretched to their limit these past three weeks. Not a cent goes towards their personal gain, let alone expenses.
Donations have pretty much dried up .. and we are all stressed to the hilt trying to figure how to explain to the already beleaguered staff, mostly residents from the nearby village of Riverlands who were themselves victims of the recent floods, that we don’t have funds to pay them wages at the end of the month, some of whom are the sole breadwinners in their homes…

We cannot begin to express our gratitude to those who have stood by and helped…
For those who’ve spewed vitriol without any thought of consequences… please stop a minute and think of the ten families who won’t have food on their tables next week…

In order to comply with the SPCAs demands, we have to get them all vetchecked & health certificates by 29 August.
The roads have been totally inaccessible the last two days- we have eventually found a vet who is able to get there TOMORROW to see them, but need to pay the vet upfront. And those needing medical care will need to be attended to. The cost of this is R68 000 excluding any medical treatment.
We have spent hours calling around for vets-this is honestly the best and only viable offer.
