How do you fix something that is broken?
You get involved heart and soul and do everything possible to change it…
That’s exactly what a handful of people with compassionate hearts did!!

There is no denying that the broken was bad.
There is also no denying that now, as we look into the eyes of the 120+ sentient beings left at the shelter, that we are responsible for their future. And we are doing everything possible to ensure that they are given the best chances going forward.

It’s very easy to sit behind a keyboard and criticise or cause damage.
It takes real commitment and heart to put your all on the line to make a real difference. We cannot thank those who have chosen the latter for their support, for us, for the animals at the shelter- and the future of the animals in the nearby communities who depend hugely on HAWK for help.

The mission now continues to fix the broken despite the odds. Legal compliance is near impossible given the circumstances, yet every day dawns with new hope for the lives of those dogs. And the 1000% commitment of those who really care continues.

We have received further warning from SPCA after a visit to the shelter on 30 August 2024. This, following the court order instruction to have all the remaining animals at the shelter vet-checked by 29 August. The 7 day notice period included a weekend and two days of intense storms, making the roads further inaccessible. Despite that, this was accomplished with a last minute vet found, at a cost of R70 000.

Estimated costs of vet treatment & medical requirements - as stipulated in the court order & subsequent warning - is in the region of R200 000. Funds we do NOT have right now.

All dogs at the shelter have been checked by a veterinarian as directed by the SPCA.
This was made a little more complicated due to the horrific storm that hit the area on Monday and Tuesday .. but we did it !!!

This is not the full invoice- nor does this cover the medicinal or veterinary treatment needed for some of the dogs.
We are processing through all the adoption/foster requests as fast as we can … it goes without saying that Homechecks will be done and proper procedure followed ..
We’re about R200 -R300 000 short at this stage for funds to comply with the vetting needs as set out by the SPCA. First stage involved about R100 000 by 3 September. Also would be needing assistance to transport some of the dogs to the vet by 3September.

We have paid towards the vet bill- but urgently need your help to pay the balance - also needing to pay our staff, many who will have to be let go, sad as it is as they’re mostly from the little community of Riverlands that has been hard hit by the recent floods.

The commitment of those who stepped in at the beginning of the month to help HAWK Hounds has been unwavering despite the huge odds… and for those who’ve toiled tirelessly without remuneration, and to all those who have contributed towards the running costs and offered help if so many different ways, we thank you once again from the bottom of our hearts.

Please- to all those messaging and whatsapping - we are not ignoring you.

The tiny core team all have jobs, and have been stretched to their limit these past three weeks. Not a cent goes towards their personal gain, let alone expenses.
Donations have pretty much dried up .. and we are all stressed to the hilt trying to figure how to explain to the already beleaguered staff, mostly residents from the nearby village of Riverlands who were themselves victims of the recent floods, that we don’t have funds to pay them wages at the end of the month, some of whom are the sole breadwinners in their homes…

We cannot begin to express our gratitude to those who have stood by and helped…
For those who’ve spewed vitriol without any thought of consequences… please stop a minute and think of the ten families who won’t have food on their tables next week…

In order to comply with the SPCAs demands, we have to get them all vetchecked & health certificates by 29 August.
The roads have been totally inaccessible the last two days- we have eventually found a vet who is able to get there TOMORROW to see them, but need to pay the vet upfront. And those needing medical care will need to be attended to. The cost of this is R68 000 excluding any medical treatment.
We have spent hours calling around for vets-this is honestly the best and only viable offer.
There are virtually no funds left in the bank account and the backabuddy funds will take 7-10 days to release.
Shelter running costs, food & water, staff etc still need to be paid …

Yes, we’re quiet.
Yes, we’re exhausted.
Yes, we’re working round the clock to comply with legal demands, and an endless flow of messages, whatspps , calls, voicenotes, and even some emails… oh, and it rained again on Saturday at the shelter …
For those asking what we’ve been doing with the donations received :
The backabuddy funds have not been withdrawn ~ donations are still coming in, for which we are so grateful for, and we are leaving that open.

The food and water donated has all been taken through to the shelter
The first batch of blankets taken through were damaged by the second floods; any blankets received subsequently have been taken through in batches.
Clothes received have been taken through.
Two freezers donated were taken through.

Funds in the bank account are being used for wages & running costs and medication ordered to comply with SPCA’s demands.

What is left in the bank account will be used towards medical costs as required by SPCA- all the dogs remaining at the shelter need to be administered both internal and external parasite treatment, vetchecked, be given vet health certificates and receive medical treatment if required.
Budgeted breakdown:
Nexguard : R15 000
Deworming : R6000
Vaccinations : R8 500
Quotes reduced for vet check and health certificate :between R800 & R1200 per dog
Approx cost should anaesthesia be required R2500-4000 (based on previous invoices)
There are approximately 100 dogs left in the shelter.

And then there’s the back fence that needs to be replaced after the last flood thanks to the dept of water and sanitation : 25 rolls of mesh fencing 30m x 1,8m x50 x50 x 1,6mm for R1350 per roll- R33 750

May we remind you too that there is no running water at the shelter as a result of the floods on 18 August and all water is. Tonight in by volunteers - also no electricity … although we have a generator that is now costing in excess of R4000 a month to run…

And some of our staff, some sole breadwinners for their families, who live in Riverlands, the local community that was damaged severely by the floods will now no longer have jobs … 😢

We are a small, dedicated & determined team who have dealt with an indescribable onslaught of vitriol for stepping up to help a shelter in need- but as the old adage goes “what doenst kill you, makes you strong ”! - we receive no remuneration (self funding petrol, airtime & data) who, with the help of an incredible group of volunteers supporting us, have been plunged into crisis management since 8 August when we stepped in.
The NPC was still in process of being set up and due to the first floods was prematurely launched.
As has been stated previously, there is currently no dedicated vehicle for the shelter and road access is challenging. 😌

The SPCA swooped on HAWK today and removed an undisclosed number of dogs. We will update once we have more clarity on exact details.
As the old adage goes, there’s your story, my story and the truth… and somewhere in between all this, the full truth will be revealed.
We are grateful to those who have supported us, especially in the last weeks since a series of disasters beyond our control struck the shelter. And even more especially for the outpouring of support today.

We will continue to update- please bear with us as it’s been an extremely traumatic day for us all, especially our shelter staff.

WOW 🤩 What a Crazy Roller Coaster it has been in the 10 days since 👉New Management👈 has taken over HAWK - Riverlands! 🤩
The new NPC was about to be launched - when floods hit the beleaguered shelter - followed by a fire 6 days later - and another flash flood caused by the Dept of Water and Sanitation two days after that.

- New bank account opened
- Snapscan & eMails set up
- BackaBuddy appeal set up
- Montego donation link set up
- Over 800kg dry dog & cat food collected
- Approx 20 new kennels donated
- Over 200 blankets collected for the dogs
- Over 100 bales of straw collected
- 3-4 KL Water collected, mostly 5L bottles donated & brought through to the shelter
- An as yet untabulated list* of furniture, freezers, fridges, microwaves & celphones offered *(untabulated as our volunteer handling donations was called away from completing this task today due to a crisis at the shelter)
- Countless bags of clothing for both the shelter staff and the local community collected and still being sorted
- Flatbed bakkie and trailer arranged to collect donations
- ⁠2 Adoptions done & 4 Pending - subject to being able to get the dogs to their new homes (home checks included)
- Offers of JoJotanks, Wendy house, Fencing, Caravans - all still to be assessed & brought to shelter if needed
- Offer of free website & hosting with interactive adoption/sponsor page for the animals

Our core team consists of Volunteers - who all work full-time - and this has all been accomplished despite that.

And all this above, accomplished with very limited road access - and no dedicated / own vehicle.

We remind everyone that there has also been No Running Water or Electricity at the shelter since the first floods.

We are proud of what we have accomplished, but without the incredible support of the generosity of our supporters, we could not have managed to even begin to make a difference.

We have been through five extremely challenging years… (much of this not disclosed publicly) and with all the ‘new’ in place, we have no doubt that we will put HAWK back on the map.

We hope, trust, pray that with all supporters, old and new will continue to help us make this dream of turning HAWK around, a reality.

How does one quantify love ?❤️
The donations and offers pouring in are absolutely mind blowing… food, water, kennels, jojo tanks, bedding, blankets, clothing, furniture, freezers, microwaves, phones, food for the shelter staff,… our little team are working nonstop to collect & take through to the shelter…

Most of our donors do not want to be thanked publicly… we appreciate every single one of you 🙌😘🙌

This cannot be happening but it is😳😳😳The FOURTH dam just burst after Department of Water and Sanitation intervened with the dams despite SwartLand Municipality ‘s request NOT TO 🤬. Their attempt to release some of the dam’s water resulted in the dam bursting (see screenshot in pics) - Shelter & nearby villages Flooded AGAIN 😭😭😭(see videos in comments)! At this point all feedback we have is that all the dogs and shelter staff are safer.. will keep updating as news comes in 🙏🏼

The roads are flooded, emergency services are on scene, there's no way in 💔

The biggest miracle we can receive is a new piece of land for our shelter.🙌🤩🙏🏼🤩🙌

Hi everyone. Many people have asked for a Wish List of things needed. Please note the entire Riverlands area has no water as water pipes were damaged in the floods. We're told possible 8 weeks to repair service.
‼️Also only the "top road" has vehicle access to Hawk.

So IDEALLY for now:
● FOOD Dry/Tins.
● Straw Bales for dogs as Bedding.
● WATER 💦

•Truck & Trailer - to collect all the many donations at the 8 collection points.
Driver required too.
• Tyres : 4x 185/65/15 for the vehicle that has been helping us with food deliveries before the floods (& will be helping us again once road has been repaired)

•WATER / 2500lit or 1000lit Jojo tank for emergencies & someone to help set it up.

•2 x Floodlights - attached to Battery (someone to set up & facilitate this) to see kennels at night.
•SOLAR PANELS - several req... & solar/electrician to set up.

Our hearts our broken for Andre ... one of the four victims of the fire is his, our, and everyone's beloved little Lucky Lucy.💔
Andre is absolutely shattered and traumatised at the loss of his little girl, who was his life...
Lucy slept next to him every single night ...

We were hoping for some sensitivity to give Andre just a little space to grieve for her, and the loss of all his worldly possessions, but as word has got out and we are being questioned as to why we didn't make a public statement immediately...

We are speechless tonight. Extremely shocked ... and yet so grateful. Such mixed emotions running through all our heads and hearts right now ...

At about 5:30 pm this evening a fire broke out in Andre's house where all our little dogs live... (Please note all house doors are open 247) Two frantic hours followed of trying to get volunteer help to the shelter & trying to ascertain what damage had transpired.

All the staff, including Andre were busy outside, and other than being in absolute shock, were luckily not injured.

At the same time, we are so grateful that somehow the other dogs managed to escape the fire, as all the little ones sleep in Andre's house...

Four of the dogs, who are extremely traumatised, have been taken home by volunteers who drove through to help. 30-40 of the smaller dogs live in the house with Andre - so they will need new kennels as well 🙏🏼

We cannot thank Malmesbury Animal Hospital - Dierehospitaal enough for being on standby, & contacting other local vets to have them on standby in case we needed to bring dogs through for medical attention. The care and compassion shown by them was incredible!!

Andre has lost literally Everything - including his cellphone. 😔 We have put out calls for clothes for him, but will also need a Caravan or Wendy house that can be put on the property for him to stay in.

‼️ In addition, the fridges & freezers where the food & medication is kept, have all been destroyed too.
👉Microwave and stove also urgently needed…

The signs are clearer than clear - we need to move. It would be the answer to all our prayers if we could find a suitable piece of land to relocate to... So besides everything else - this is our biggest wish right now ... 🙏🏼

As yet the cause of the fire has not been confirmed…

UPDATE 15/8: the fire was caused by a powerbank that was charging Andre’s phone. Andre was in the yard outside the house when this happened. Every effort was made to get the dogs who in the house to safety- unfortunately four were unable to be saved and succumbed … hard to imagine the panic adding to the fact that there is no running water at the shelter due to the dam bursts that flooded the area a week ago 😢 💔

The dedication of our on-the-ground staff & small team of volunteers is Phenomenal!! As is the assistance we've been receiving from the public…

We've found homes for 6 of our dogs through this crisis, but are unable to get them to their new homes at the moment… Hopefully once the sun comes out & the access road can be repaired, they’ll be moved to their new homes. 🙏🏼
