Update from the Swartland SPCA: Progress in the Disaster Area

We’re pleased to share some heartening updates from the disaster-stricken areas we've been working in. Yesterday, our team managed to organize a safe and dry space for a pregnant sow, allowing her to give birth in comfort. This morning, we were delighted to find her basking in the sun, surrounded by her healthy new piglets—a true testament to the power of timely intervention.

We also reached out to the owners of pigs who were previously wallowing in mud and f***s, urging them to improve the living conditions for their animals. We're happy to report that today, we found these pigs in a clean, dry pens and we were able to feed them fresh vegetables donated by the Yzerfontein SPAR.

Stay tuned—there’s exciting news coming this Friday. Watch this space for more updates!

Supporting Animals in the Aftermath of Riverlands Flooding:
The recent disaster in Riverlands, where three dams burst, has left a trail of devastation in its wake. The floodwaters, powerful and relentless, swept through land inhabited by subsistence farmers, displacing communities and wreaking havoc on their livestock. Tragically, many animals were caught in the deluge, swept away by the torrents and drowned. In the face of this catastrophe, the Swartland SPCA and Cape of Good Hope SPCA responded immediately, focusing on rescuing animals in the most immediate danger during the first two days of the disaster.

The Ongoing Challenge: Supporting Displaced Farm Animals
Now that the immediate threat has subsided, the challenge ahead is immense. The floodwaters have receded, but the damage left behind is staggering. Many of the farmers who lost their homes are now in emergency housing in the village. The farm animals, crucial to their owners’ livelihoods, are now in desperate need of assistance.

One of the most pressing issues is the condition of pigs and other livestock that are now contained in sheds, as the fences that once kept them safe have been swept away. These animals are living in dire conditions, with floors covered in mud and f***s, and no access to fresh water. Additionally, the entire area has been left without electricity or running water, making the situation even more dire. Water tankers are being brought in to supply fresh water to the residents, but the need is vast, and resources are stretched thin.

A Call for Shared Responsibility: Community and Farmers Must Act
As a small SPCA, we are acutely aware of the limitations of our resources. The task ahead—helping these animals and supporting the farmers as they rebuild their lives—will need to be tackled on a case-by-case basis. While we are committed to doing everything within our power to assist, it is crucial to understand that the expectation that the SPCA will or can do everything is not realistic.

We are urging the subsistence farmers, who know their animals best, to play an active role in this recovery process. We understand that the situation is overwhelming, but their involvement is essential. We are here to support, guide, and advise.

How You Can Help
If you’re able to contribute in any way—whether through donations, or offering your expertise—please reach out to us. The road to recovery is long, and we need all the help we can get to make a real difference.

In the face of such overwhelming adversity, it is our unity and compassion that will see us through. Let’s work together to restore hope and dignity to the animals and people of Riverlands.

From Despair to Safety: SPCA's Lifesaving Pig Rescue After Flood

The area devastated by the burst Riverland dam is home to many residents who rely on pig farming for their livelihood. The aftermath of the flood has been heartbreaking, with SPCA Inspectors encountering numerous dead pigs along their route. In one particularly distressing case, they found a sow trapped in her waterlogged enclosure.

Under immense stress, the sow had tragically begun eating her piglets—a behavior not uncommon in such extreme situations. Faced with this grim scene, the SPCA team acted swiftly. They broke a hole in the bottom of the enclosure wall to allow the water to drain out, providing the only chance to save the surviving animals. Thanks to their efforts, the mother pig and her remaining piglets were rescued and taken to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, where they are now receiving the care they desperately need.

In addition to this rescue, our teams worked tirelessly to ensure that many other pigs were moved out of muddy and hazardous conditions, giving them a better chance at survival during this crisis.

Both the Swartland SPCA and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA are actively scouring the entire area for animals in need. Our teams are committed to ensuring that no animal is left behind during this crisis, and every effort is being made to rescue and care for those affected. Unfortunately, there have been times when rescue operations had to be abandoned due to more heavy rain, further complicating our efforts.

We received an update from the Joint Operations Centre that the fourth dam appears to be stable for now, with water levels having dropped significantly. While there remains some concern about potential rain, it seems that the worst of the crisis is behind us. We have been asked to distribute food at the POP (Point of Presence) centres, where people are particularly worried about their animals.

Our Manager, Inspector Louise van Zyl, is working diligently to compile a list of names of those affected by the floods. This will help us ensure that animal food reaches the right people and give us the opportunity to assess any additional needs for their animals. Louise will also be visiting the POP centres to speak directly with the affected individuals.

3 Swartland communities awoke to disaster in the early hours of the morning when two retention dams collapsed, and fast flowing water ran through the streets, shifting houses and leaving devastation in its wake. The communities of Dassenberg, Chatsworth and Riverlands are flooded while a 4th dam's water levels are being closely monitored. Inspectors from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and Swartland SPCA are on the ground, actively seeking out survivors, displaced animals, and those at further risk of harm. There have been many animal casualties.

🚑 We are working closely with the Disaster Risk Management Centre and we have an Inspector stationed at the Joint Operations Centre to facilitate a co-ordinated emergency response to the areas of greatest need. The flooded areas can only be accessed on foot and we’re hard at work searching for the survivors amongst those whose lives have sadly already been lost to the water. Discussions with community leaders suggest that hundreds of farm animals and horses are missing and that all animal feed has been washed away.

🙏🏼There is a desperate need to help this community, please consider a donation in support of our rescue efforts or a donation of Oathay, fresh fruits or vegetables.
With thanks to our friends at Checkers, donations of pet food, blankets and other animal care essentials can be dropped off at the following locations:

✅ Pet Shop Science Stores Laguna Mall (Langebaan)
✅ Pet Shop Science Store De Zwartland Werf (Malmesbury)
✅ Checkers Big Bay

Drop offs can also be made in Darling at the Swartland SPCA as well as at the Riverlands Primary School where there is a well co-ordinated effort to distribute goods to the community.
