Injured Black Mamba in a roof.
So the same evening after dropping Jason and Emily at home, I was driving back on the N2 towards home and I got a frantic call from a gentleman that they had seen a Mamba go into the roof. Then Nick Evans- Snake Rescuer sent me a message then asked me if I could do the call as it was down the road from where I live. Being close to home I quickly went and picked up my ladders, my torches and Helen hopped in the car to be a second pair of eyes.
I got to the property in question, and found some anxious people standing in their driveway. There were light set up all over the show, I had a quick poke around pi outside then opted to climb in the roof.
I climbed in the roof, saw the Mamba in the exact place that the people said it entered into the roof, so I managed to use my super long tongs to get Mamba out of the corner of the roof very gently. I necked the Mamba quickly, and reelized it had a large gash about 2 thirds down its body. So wrapping the snake around my hand to keep the wound closed, I asked them to please hand me up the bucket, I got the Mamba in the bucket then Helen took the bucket out the roof. I then phoned Nick Evans and informed him this Mamba had an extremely nasty wound. We proceeded home where Nick and Carla quickly arrived at my house, with nick holding the Mamba Carla administered some pain killers and bandaged her up quite quickly as we could, thus happened in the driveway. We'll done Carla and Nick.
Thank you for informing me that Mamba went for surgery, and coming through so quickly and helping much appreciated, you two make a good team. Thank you for taking the Monitor Lizard off my hands, going to Euan Genevier for his studies.

Sunday:
Sunday started as a very interesting day, got a call from a very nice lady in Umbumbulu, which is about 60 km south west of me.
So I asked snake man Jason Arnold the snake man if he would like to come on an adventure with me. So Jason and his daughter Emily came along with me. Just as Jason got to my house his clutch packed up. So set off on our adventure, took about n hour and a half to get there, right into the back of rural Durban. Jason Emily and myself arrived, we were ushered into a storeroom where there was a lot of chairs on the one side and quite a few boxes at the back as the lady had a catering business. There was also a very strong smell of jeys fluid. I went outside to look for any exit points, found 1,then decided to go search inside with Jason. He spotted the snake behind some boxes then I quickly got my grab and caught the snake, thanks Jason, a feisty little boy, about 2.1 meters long. So the way back we got a call for a Nile Monitor lizard that had gone under Mercedes Benz, it took us about 45 minutes to get to Chatsworth, and then the fun and games began, pushing hosepipes through underground drainage pipes, searching the garden, the Lizzard was no where to be found. Obviously it was scared as there were many people trying to find it, the neighbour's, family and friends. All the while I was getting calls for spotted hush snakes, night adders, and green snakes hiding in garages. Jason opted to stay at the h I use to look for the Monitor Lizard and Emily and I rushed off to go catch a night adder in Shall cross, great team work. We got back to Jason and the crowd had dissappeared so we very quietly sat in the corner of a property and looked and watched under the car from a distance. There we go Jason saw the tongue flicker from between the 2 back wheels. It was as good as caught. Well done Jason for getting it out from under the car and for having my back for the day, it was a lot of fun.

3 hectic Mamba catches in one day.
A call came in at about 05h30 in the morning, from a very poor area in Nirvana Hills Northdene, with having Trevor back from overseas, and he had slept at our house, I woke him up and said he has braught me luck. We quickly jumped in the car, and made our way there. Luckily it was just down the road from where we live.
On arrival Trevor and I were lead through a maze of tin sharks, and right on the last one that is where the Mamba was hiding behind a bed, the biggest problem with a Tim shack dwelling is that there are many gaps where the Mamba can escape.
This one was quite securely made with concrete flooring all the way up to the edges. I looked behind the bed and low and behold there was the Mamba. It took one look at me, standing on the bed and went straight into the base of the bed where a rat chewed a hole. Trevor and I flipped the base of the bed on its side, cut a small slit in the base, and saw the Mamba lying on the center wooden beam of base.
A easy catch, I stuck my tongs in, grabbed it and pulled it through the hole that I made, and put it in the bucket. Safe
Mamba no 2 manor gardens.
Honestly I did not expect this to be a Mamba. As the lady phoned me and told me there was a thickish brown snake in a drain under a cover. Still having Trevor in the car with me, we made haste and got there as quickly as we could. On arrival a young man directed me to the drain, where he put a box on top of the drain cover. I removed the box and the drain cover had no holes in it so I couldn't see what was underneath.
Honestly thinking it could be a brown house snake, a Herald or a worse case scenario a Spiitiiing Cobra, I grabbed the sides of the drain cover, and flipped it off very quickly,
Well I don't know who got a bigger fright me or the Mamba. I think I must have jumped about 2 meters back. With Teev shouting it's a Mamba and we need a bigger bucket,
I grabbed my grabstick, quickly caught it while Trev was getting another bucket.
I then discovered the Mamba was covered in Eyes fluid as the Gardner has poured some down the drain with the intension of scaring the snake away. I then ran over to the pool, where Trev and I quickly dunked it in the pool and washed it off. Thank goodness no damage done as it was still one hell of a handful to get it in the bucket.
Mamba no 3 Nirvana Hills Northdene.
Getting a panic phone call from a gentleman in Nirvana Hills that a black Mamba has gotten into his bird cage and has bitten his parrot. Unfortunately this does happen from time to time. I was helping a friend of mine Bonnie with some woodwork at the time. So I asked if she wanted to come with for a drive to see if I can get the Mamba. So on arrival, I was very quickly ushered up the driveway to a flight of stairs, and shown where the Mamba was hiding. They had thrown a paint brush roller and a stick at it, it was hiding behind a pot plant. So after moving numerous items off the step, I then had a clear view of the Mamba and managed to grab it with my tongs, it wasn't a very difficult catch, I think the Mamba was just happy to get away from the crowd hanging around.
On the note of Mambas attacking pets or birds, they are like any wild animal, if they see a chance to get hold of something that's in a cage, it's an easy meal.
You must remember we put concrete structures in the middle of their natural habitat, and they have learned to live with us, fortunately people are starting to understand them and contacting snake catchers to remove them and relocate them to a safer habitat far away from humans.
So please don't kill them let us do our jobs.

So yesterday I got a call from a gentleman of a Spitting Cobra, his dog chased it under a wood pile behind the house in the back garden in Malvern. As I was attending a radio interview I sent my daughter Savannah on the call.
She said it was a easy catch and her first solo of a Spitter.
Well done Savannah on the catch.
We are so proud of you.
We went to collect it from Savannah as soon as the interview was done.
Thank you Nick Evans- Snake Rescuer for sending us the call.

This morning we got a call for a possible Black Mamba. Unfortunately these beautiful Red Lipped Heralds are mistaken for Mambas quite often. Quite a nice size it's impressive.
Actually the area where we found it was like looking for a needle in a hay stak.
Well done Grant an awesome catch.

3 Nile Monitor Lizards in 2 weeks.
First Monitor 2 weeks ago Friday, it was round about ten to four in the afternoon, I got a call from Pat from Guardians of the fur Kingdom that there was a Monitor Lizard in a shopping center in Chatsworth, so not having much diesel in the van, I was on the way to the hardware and put that idea on the back seat. I was given a pin location, and I started making my way there totally in the blind not expecting to find it. On the way there I got a message from Jason Arnold that there was a Monitor Lizard in Chatsworth. Funny how different people phone multiple reptile rescues at the same time. So I informed Jason I was on my way there already, when I finally got there, there was quite an audience of people looking to kill it with sticks and pangas.
Unfortunately it is believed by some folk that if they eat them they will become super strong and invisible, this is really a load of non sence. Luckily Vanessa from guardians of the fur kingdom was keeping the crowd at bay. Shame the poor Monitor was so scared, it buried itself in a fern and thorn
Thicket, and with a little bit of searching I managed to find the tail, work my way down to the body and let it claw down to my arm.
I had to quickly get it in the bucket and back to the car.
Just want to say thank you to the optometrist at the center of informing us of the Lizard.
It was handed to Euan Genevier from ukzn
University and microchipped, weighed, measured and released safely back into the wild far away from people.
Nile Monitor no 2.
Same shopping center Chatsworth.
This time getting a phone call from the optometrist, they informed us that a Monitor Lizard had been spotted on a property opposite the center, near where I caught the other one about 50 meters.
This time Helen and I went out, we got to the property in question after 2 very nice ladies directed us there.
We managed to catch the Lizard in a shed behind the house, a very large specimen just over 1.5 meters long. Not being able to get hold of Euan from ukzn I contacted Nick Evans- Snake Rescuer he was glad to come and take this monster off my hands as we didn't have enough space to keep it for a couple of days until Euan could collect it.
While moving it into a more secure container it managed to get it's claws into my arm. One doesn't realize how much power these lizards are and how sharp their claws are.
No 3.
So on Tuesday I got a call again from Pat
From Guardians of the fur kingdom, there's another Monitor Lizard in Chatsworth.
Not at all a very large one, it's in the municipal offices. So having a diesel issue as we are not sponsored, Vanessa from guardians of the fur kingdom phoned me and said that she would bring it through to my house. So I talked her through on how to catch it and so she did and put it in the back of her bakkie. Well done Vanessa.
When she got here I expected it to be in some sort of a container or bucket, but it was loose in the back of the vehicle obviously it had a canopie on it.
Me being so dam tall, I had to fold myself up and climb in there and catch it.
A big then you to Euan from Ukzn university,
And to Nick Evans for taking this little one off our hands and making sure it gets released in a safe place.

Green Mamba VS Alsatian
Luckily both survived

With Friday being quite a hot day I expected to get a few snake calls, we'll I did. Started off with a spotted bush snake in a bathroom in Berea. Whilst I was busy with this I had a frantic phone call from a gentleman on the Bluff that his dog had been bitten by a Green Mamba. The gentleman in question did the right thing and was already on his way to Westville vet when he placed the phone call. He advised me that his mother was at home watching the snake. So I made hast using all my knowledge of shortcuts to get to the Bluff. On arrival his mother pointed me to a kiddies play area where there was astroturf and shade clothe lying over the sides of the fence. There curled up halfway down the fence underneath the shade cloth was a very small Green Mamba around 1.4 to 1.5 meters long. Honestly at first glance I saw a lot of black markings on the snake which turned out to be paint.
So I initially thaught it was a Boom Slang.
So I quickly caught the Mamba and realized there had been some keys fluid thrown on it, for future reference please cdo not throwJeys fluid on snakes.
I had to quickly wash it off, I realized it had been bitten by the dog, it's tail was quite chewed up and had quite a few broken ribs.
To top it off she was also gravvid(pregnant).
Got hold of my good friend Jason Arnold
Who advised me to get to Riverside vet as quickly as possible. So quickly stopping at home to give it a wash off with some sunlight soap Helen and I rushed through to Riverside Vet to meet Jason.
We were met by Jason. Dr Kerry really knows what she is doing with snakes Thank You very much. The little girl (The Mamba)
Was x prayed, injected with anti biotics and sent home with us. She is now comfortable and happy and unfortunately still covered in paint but not too badly, we are still waiting g for her to lay her eggs, and give her a good feed then she will be safely released into the wild where she belongs.
I kept in contact with the gentleman who's dog had been bitten throughout the weekend and had lots of regular updates from him and on Monday morning the dog had been released into his care.
Just a warning, if your dog is bitten by a venomous snake it can cost anywhere between 15 and 50 thousand rand in vet care. Even though the dog was bitten in the eye, thank goodness it survived.
