Tip of the week - Transplant shock. πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ, Don’t be alarmed when you see your new transplanted plants droop , it is totally normal, it is known as transplant shock and is caused by the stress of moving into a new home , finding its feet and just getting comfy. It is important to always water transplants generously. At the Urban Farm we apply an organic sea- w**d product as a foliar application, called Kelpak This bounces them back to life in a day or two.

Tip of the weekπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ-microgreens , what are they , how to use them and how to grow them.

Microgreens are young seedlings of edible vegetables , planted densely and harvested less than 14 days after germination. They can be grown outside, inside and in a greenhouse, depending on the time of year and the climate in which you live. They can be used to replace salad greens , garnish or by themselves as a healthy go-to snack. We love growing microgreens on the Urban Farm πŸ’šπŸ₯¬πŸŒ±

Tip of the week πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ, landscape fabric - we’ve been getting afew questions about this over the past few weeks and why, how and what we use it for on the urban farm.

We use landscape fabric for a few reasons , the biggest one is we hate w**ds, the time taken to w**d beds daily /weekly is quite consuming and we find suppressing the w**ds has helped with time management. Other advantages include , water retention , warmth to plant roots and soil wash in heavy downpours. While using landscape fabric is certainly more labor-intensive on the front and back end of the season compared with straight field planting, we’ve found that the added w**d suppression and perfect preset plant spacing far outweigh the drawbacks.

Some snaps of the method we use to create the holes , using SPIN farming techniques we are able to plant 24 heads of lettuce in a square metre. If you tired of w**ding perhaps give this a go, just remember to add mulch /compost after every harvest πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ₯¬πŸŒ±

Tip of the week πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ- what is Mycorrhizal fungi , and why is it important to understand its function in your soil?!

Mycorrhizae is a fungus, that exist as very tiny, almost entirely microscopic, threads called hyphae. The hyphae are all interconnected into a net-like web called mycelium, which measures hundreds or thousands of miles, all packed into a tiny area around the plant roots , networking all over your garden.

They form a beautiful symbiotic relationship with plants and their roots , trading nutrients found in the soil with the help of microbes & bacteria , in exchange for carbohydrates made by the plant during photosynthesis.

So using inorganic fertilisers and nasty pesticides, will destroy this incredible underground relationship that coexists right under our feet. This is why Switching to organic growing methods is so vitally important to preserve this magnificent planet.

Last week we managed to catch up with the EThekwini Municipality Nelisiwe Gumede and our strategic partners Umgibe Farming and Niya Consulting to discuss the potential of collaborating with them to use municipal land for farming that isn't being used. We truly believe that collaboration and engaging with the right stakeholders, with a common purpose and goal, is the real key to an inclusive and more importantly sustainable food system.

Tip Of the weekπŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ- To stop or reduce the use of harmful pesticides we plant nasturtiums and marigolds , they are our favourite companion plants to use on the farm . Nasturtiums fight common pests, attract beneficial insects, attract pollinators, and are ideal companion for tomatoes, cucumbers, kale, kohlrabi, collards, broccoli, cabbage and radishes. Marigolds are particularly helpful in minimising the attack of harmful nematodes that cause unusual growth on your plant roots and reduce plant vitality. These plants, particularly Marigold, are a Durban favourite. 🌱πŸ₯¬πŸž
