If you've ever taken a trip down the South Coast you would have quickly realized what a close knit community we all are. We are known for our beautiful coastline, our very talented young surfers as well as many other things!! It's with that statement that I think of Mahatma Gandhi's great quote... "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.."

uMngeni SPCA’s kennel facilities are in desperate need of upgrading

Fifty-seven kennels provide clean, warm and safe shelter for over one hundred animals every month. All need renovating. Wall surfaces are pitted and damaged. Floors are cracked with chunks of concrete missing. Most fences are patched which creates vulnerable sections for dogs to worry open and escape through to other areas, sometimes resulting in dangerous confrontations.

Seven broken gates require urgent attention.

With minimal funds all we can achieve are temporary fixes, at best.

We are asking you to make it your business to help ours; specifically donate funding or materials to repair and renovate our kennels.

We need:
• Polyurethane paint
• Cement and plaster sand
• Galvanised meshing
• Rust Converter
• Enamel paint
• Shade Cloth
• Alternatively, monetary donations.

Your sponsorship would be publicised in the press, on our page and across invested and relevant social media platforms. We would, of course, provide photographs to leverage in your internal and external publicity. Donations are tax deductible; we will issue a Section 18A tax certificate for the money or value of goods donated.

Adopted ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Dumped on the side of the road by the robot.

The lady just saw her sticking her head up and then lying down again. She is about 9 years old. We don't know much about her unfortunately. Hopefully she was lost or something but sadly she is also full of lumps and bumps. She is very sweet but an old girl.

Please, please bring animals to us no matter the circumstances we will never say no.

We are open 24/7 for animal admissions

Written by Nick Evans.

FACTS ABOUT THE SNAKES OF DURBAN
In response to the dramatic post, with misinformation, going viral on Facebook & Whatsapp, here is some useful, accurate information for you. I'll try keep it as short as possible (I won't be able to cover every single aspect unfortunately)

COMMON SNAKES OF DURBAN
The most common species, by far, is the Spotted Bush Snake (pictured below), often referred to as the garden snake. They're everywhere, and fortunately non-venomous. Green Mambas are generally a coastal species, stick to the trees and are shy.
The other two most common are Brown House Snakes (non-venomous) & Herald Snakes (technically mildly venomous but the venom is of no concern to people).
Most of our calls are for these species, or other harmless species, but we do get called for venomous species, such as Night Adders (not lethal), Black Mambas & Mozambique Spitting Cobras.

SNAKEBITE
The snake that bites the most people in Durban is the Stiletto Snake, a dark, small (30-40cm) species, usually active on humid evenings. People pick them up thinking they're harmless, and want to help the snake. Unfortunately, snakes are terrified of us, and don't know when we want to help, so they will bite. They have a cytotoxic venom, causing swelling & pain, but it is not life-threatening (defintely seek medical attention).
Bites from other venomous species, considering Durban's large human population, are very rare, especially if the snake is being left alone. I usually record less than 3-5 Black Mamba bites a year, and often, it's someone trying to catch or kill the snake.
In the event of a snakebite, transport the patient to hospital. Do not attempt to take the snake with you, dead or alive. You may send a pic of the snake to a snake-catcher.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A SNAKE
Leave it alone. DO NOT try to catch it, DO NOT try to kill it. The snake has no desire to attack you. They are scared of us. If a snake is attacked, & left with no option, it will likely defend itself.
In saying that, I do not mean let it live happily in your house, unless you want it to! Call a professional snake remover for advice or to remove the snake.
Keep dogs & cats away from the snakes. Your pet may kill the snake, which you may view as a good thing. However, it can come at a cost, either to your wallet in the form of vet bills, or your pets life. Dogs in particular are not afraid to defend their homes from venomous snakes, and it never ends will.
If you do want a snake-remover to come through, please phone WHEN you see the snake, and please watch the snake until the remover arrives. This is very important.
Snake removers will likely charge a call-out fee, or at the very least, ask for a donation towards petrol. This is because of the high price of fuel, and the fact we don't get that for free (plus all the other costs of living). For many of us, it's our only source of income, and we need to try and survive. Bare in mind we help many underprivileged people, in emergencies, at our own expense as well. It is by no means a 'money-making business'. We struggle, badly.

KEEPING SNAKES AWAY FROM YOUR PROPERTY
-Unfortunately, you won't like what I have to say here- but there are no repellents that will effectively keep snakes out of your property. We see all the time how various chemicals, plants etc do not work. Burning tyres doesn't work. Rather save your money.
Keeping windows & doors closed permanently was mentioned in that dramatic, viral message. It's Durban, it's hot, without aircon, you'll suffer with no air flow. A snake may enter through an open window or door, it may not. While it happens, the chance of it happening to you, at least regularly, is slim. If you really want, you can invest in those screens used to keep insects and monkeys out. Otherwise, worry more about human intruders. They are a far bigger threat.
Keep your yard as neat and tidy as possible. Wood, rubbish, brick piles etc, messy storerooms, make for great retreats for snakes. They also provide homes for snake food- rats, lizards, maybe a toad.
Trim tree branches away from roofs, and hedges away from windows, but you don't have to cut them down and pave your whole garden. It won't make much of a difference.
Those are the best precautions you can take. The reality is, it's Africa. A snake could end up anywhere, no matter what you do.

One last note for now...
It's egg-laying season for mambas, yes. It doesn't mean every mamba around is carrying eggs. Other species are laying too, while some may only lay next month. Some species, like mambas, mate in winter, some species mate in spring.
Also, snakes don't live in family groups or hunt in packs. They are generally alone.

Hope this helps.

Well done Amanzimtoti SPCA and Snare Aware.

Somehow, we are already at the halfway mark of the year, and we thought it would be a good time to reflect on our work in this first half of 2023.

Thus far, the team of Snare Aware volunteers has:
- Conducted a total of 28 snare sweeps.
- Travelled 3 738,01 km’s to areas around the country.
- Dedicated over 450 man hours to the search for snares.
- Walked over 750km in difficult terrain.

All of this effort has resulted in 59 snares being removed from the bush this year and countless great memories and good friends made along the way. The reduction in the number of snares this year is promising, we are slowing the tide. If our work resonates with you, please consider donating towards our ongoing costs (fuel, equipment, clothing). We work in difficult environments that have a significant impact on our clothing and gear. We know times are tough, but every cent counts!

We love what we do and how we do it, and we look forward to what the second half of the year has in store for us. If you would like to get involved, please let us know - we could use the help!
