🖤 Behind the scene: the stress & trauma of animal welfare 🖤
I generally don’t like to post sad depressing posts, I like to focus on the wins & positives BUT everyday we fight to make it happy outcomes.

🫶🏻Furballs currently provides food to
👊🏻110 dogs and +500 cats, far & wide & across KZN
For most of these animals we are also the providers of basic medical care & treatment

🐶 We use approximately 700kgs of dogs food a month & if I’m honest the dogs don’t get nearly the correct amount of food they need per meal
🐱 The community cats need around 200-220kgs A WEEK. The resident cats use about 100kgs a month. So in total our monthly dry cat food worse case needs is 980kgs a month

🆘 700 kgs of dog food & 980 kgs of cat food a month is no longer sustainable and the requests for help don’t stop 🆘

We do try to ensure they all get at least one meal a day, everyone is sterilized & vaccinated and when possible dewormed & treated for ticks & fleas.

Yes I get attached to every animal. Yes I see every animal as ‘mine’. Yes it’s slowly killing me.

I am thankfully for the dedicated supporters, I am thankful for everyone who shares our posts.

Furballs may be close to 11 years running but I have been involved in AW for over 20 years so I am in no way naive or ignorant about how things work and I know AW is not sustainable.

I know the car needs a service
I know the clean water JoJo needs to be sorted
I know my To Do List is 72 items long

Why is she writing this you may ask

I watched a life end today. Everything possible done medically and sometimes even then the universe has other plans. Everything seems so unfair today.

In the last 40 days, medical expenses totaled over 40k

I can handle the medical if you can help with the rest. We don’t have staff, we don’t have salaries, we don’t have kennel fees. Sure a car service would be great but I’m not even asking that.

All I am asking is for the assistance to keep the bowls filled.

Today was not the best day.

We started early at the emergency vet with one cat and ended at our normal vet with another cat.

But today’s heros were Kim from Westville Veterinary Hospital and Linda from Durban North Veterinary Clinic

We are grateful.

October is turning out to be a difficult month 💔

When dealing with animals I honestly never know if I’m making the right decisions. I have been able to separate heart from head and look at things diagnostically and arrive at the best medical course of treatment and we are blessed with an amazing vet team that does not mind having to run things through with me over and over again.

But at the end of the day and the quiet of the night, I always wonder if the choices I make are the rights ones.

And then I am unpacking the car and calculating food resources and I look up and see a rainbow 💜
