Otto Watching Grant Langley and Bengston in the 1.50 Grand Prix 🥰
Dr Carla Langley
I saw a bumper sticker on a car the other day and it said: “I’m a veterinary nurse. So what’s your superpower?” And it’s just so true – without our team and the hours and the love and care that they bring to EVH every day, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.
So today is International Employee Appreciation Day and we’re using it as an opportunity to send a big shout out to our entire team.
Thanks team! What you put in is greatly appreciated today and every day!

recognising colic (1)
Do you know how to spot colic in horses?
Colic indicates a painful problem in a horse’s abdomen which can be caused by a number of different conditions. Less than 10% of all colic cases are severe enough to require surgery; nevertheless, every case of colic should be taken seriously because it can be difficult to distinguish between a mild and a more severe case.
If you suspect your horse is suffering from colic, contact our team on 0798840179. The key to increasing a good outcome is to identify the problem early.

The weather is perfect for a long ride, but your horse may not be. More than 60% of equine lameness is related to osteoarthritis and can affect horses of any age. And it can progress without obvious signs before permanent damage occurs.
If you suspect your horse is suffering from joint pain, give our team a call as we use advanced diagnostics for lameness. We were the first veterinary practice in South Africa and we are the only practice in KZN licensed to own and use the acclaimed Equinosis Lameness Locator.
State-of-the-art technology, it is highly effective in the investigation and identification of lameness as well as an investigation tool for poor performance or as a general monitoring tool to survey your horse’s movement.
Want to know more? Give our team of experts a call on 031 769 1072 and we’ll see how we can help.

Fireworks (1)
𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲.
If your dog is like ours, as soon as there are loud noises, they become restless and agitated. As veterinarians we sometimes have to deal with injuries resulting from dogs reacting to loud noises, injuries sustained from climbing or jumping through windows or running into the street. It can be a traumatic time for everyone. Cats can also be affected so it is important to keep an eye on them as well.
So as we go into the season of fireworks and firecrackers, here are some tips to help keep your pets calm:
• Make sure your dogs get plenty of exercise early in the day and your cats are left alone to complete their 23 hour nap.
• Keep your pets indoors and create a quiet space for them which might include a “storm crate” which is insulated and serves to make them feel safe as well as to keep them safe from self-harm.
• Put on some music or the TV to mask the noise.
• Keep your windows, doors and curtains closed to block out flashing lights and to muffle loud sounds.
• Most of all, give them lots of love.
If your pets, particularly your dogs are very scared of loud noises, we recommend that you give us a call for calming medication. This should be administered in the late afternoon or prior to an imminent storm.
For more information, contact our vets in our Small Animal Clinic about your pet and we’ll see how we can help them (and you).
