Why would you own and manage a livery yard business? 🐴

I've been reflecting a lot lately on why I continue to run a livery yard business. Despite the long hours, hard work, and all the challenges that come with it - like dealing with labour issues, horse injuries, and maintenance - it can sometimes feel overwhelming and even take away from the joy of it all. But it's important to remember the deeper reasons behind why I started this journey.

The primary reason I run a livery yard is my deep love for horses. With my own horses and the space available, I wanted to create an environment where other horses can experience the benefits of herd life in a natural setting.

Running a livery yard isn’t about sponsoring the upkeep of my own horses. It’s driven by a deep passion for horses and a commitment to providing them with a natural, happy environment.

It’s certainly not about the money—anyone who runs a yard knows it’s not a profitable venture. The costs of maintenance and reliable grooms are significant and ongoing. The responsibility is immense, and it often means lying awake at night worrying about the horses during a storm or managing complaints that come with the job.

But despite the challenges and the lack of financial gain, the true reward is seeing the horses play, flourish, and be content. That joy is what motivates me every day.

Thank you for supporting my passion and allowing me to share it with others! 🐴🫶

Couldn’t say it better myself 🙏

As a barn owner, the hardest line you'll ever draw is the boundary of who you allow in and who you allow to stay.

A friendly reminder to my fellow trainers (and any horse person in general)-

-Nobody is worth your peace of mind..if they cost you your peace, kick them out!

- No one can buy your trust, when you see their true actions...believe them.

- If they can't respect you or the facility, they need to leave.

- No amount of money is worth harboring negative energy in your work and play atmosphere.

I am done trying to hatch bad eggs. I am no longer willing to try to fix, help, slave or suffer for those not willing to give the same effort or at the least carry themselves with class and integrity.

Say it with me friends:

Your barn, your rules. And your happy place. If they don't like it, they can leave.

Customer service should not feel like slavery. You shouldn't feel uncomfortable when people pull into your barn driveway. Stick to your guts. And your boundaries. 💕

Space to roam

We believe horses should have freedom to run and to socialise. That’s why we introduce new horses into a herd as soon as possible and monitor them closely to make sure all horses in a turnout group are compatible . We don’t do small paddocks, we’re not a competitive yard, therefore our clients are happy to let their horses run wild with their friends. Happy horse, happy life right...

Our outride riding trails must be one of the most scenic in the Cape. A quick ride across the neighbouring farm takes you to the most breathtaking view of Table Mountain.

Another plus is that the Highland Riding Academy is also situated here at Groot Roosboom, so that helps if you need to touch up on your riding skills.

Please send us a message if you want to come and have a look and chat about what we have to offer.
