Dr Bernice getting ready for surgery…

Our patients receive a health check before surgery and then a premedication. When they are sedated we shave and prep the area of surgery (in this rattie’s case it was both a spay AND a lump removal) and then proceed to take them to theatre. A sterile set of instruments are opened for each surgery, and our patients are kept on a heating mat and warmed room to reduce heat loss. Post-op they are monitored very closely until wide awake and then receive some yummy snacks to get the happy juices flowing again!

Interesting case: Uterine intussusception and uterine prolapse in a rat.

Yoda, a very sweet and very well loved rattie presented to Dr Bernice last week for a pink structure protruding from her v***a. On examination it appears that she was suffering from a uterine prolapse and a structure of about 1.5cm was protruding through her vaginal canal! She had chewed at the tip, causing a black nectrotic tip to the structure.

She was taken to surgery where it was discovered that she had a uterine growth that had caused a uterine intussusception (part of the uterus gets pulled into itself like a partially inside out sock - see diagram!). The growth was so large that it then protruded out of the vaginal canal and we suspect Yoda chewed and pulled on it, causing the prominent prolapse.

Through gentle technique Dr Bernice managed to reduce the uterine prolapse and could then remove both the diseased uterus, ovaries and growth.

Yoda made a wonderful recovery and is once again her normal happy and bright self!

Egg binding is a serious life threatening condition that can develop in tortoises (and other reptiles and birds). Symptoms can include obvious signs if straining without producing an egg, lethargy and weakness, hind limb paresis, inappetance etc. It is generally diagnosed based on the clinical history and an xray.

In many cases medical management can assist in allowing the egg to move far along down the reproductive tract that it can manually be removed through the cloaca. On some occasions however this is impossible and abdominal surgery is required.

This is not a small task in a tortoise! A boney ‘window’ has to be cut out of its plastron (bottom part of shell) and the egg then removed surgically. That part would be similar to a performing a c-section. The boney ‘window’ then needs to be stabilised back in olace with special materials to allow for the long healing time that is requires for tortoises (months!).

This is a big surgery for a tortoise to undergo, but in a case like this it can be life saving!

Dental disease in rabbits can be very serious and potentially life-threatening. Rabbits teeth grow continuously and can wear unevenly. Uneven wear can result due to teeth malalignement, injuries to jaw or tooth root, tooth root abscesses, poor diet that does not allow for proper wear etc.

When this happens pointed spikes form on the side of the teeth which cause painful, sometimes infected, wounds on the tongue and cheeks. In severe dental disease the tooth roots become distorted and overlong and can lead to pain and facial abscesses.

Rabbits with dental problems can usually be treated but early intervention is very important. We advise that even healthy rabbits come have a dental and health check every 6 - 12 months so that any teeth abnormalities can be caught early. When dental disease is present a more frequent dental check is necessary.

Welcome to Exotic Surgical Services!

This practice was born from the desire to be able to offer gold standard surgical care for all exotic and avian species.

Dr Bernice has been exclusively an avian and exotic vet for over 10 years. She has always had a passion for surgery, and completed her Surgical Internship at the Animal Referral Hospital in Sydney, Australia in 2009. Since then she has had the immense privilege of working with all types of avian and exotic species, learning how each individual species needs their own unique anaesthetic and surgical care. She feels passionate about the fact that all animals, no matter their size or monetary worth, deserve the same excellent care.

When she is not doing exotic surgeries, Dr Bernice is also the Head Sea Turtle veterinarian at the Two Oceans Turtle Concervation Centre.

ESS is run exclusively by Dr Bernice and her supporting staff. We work on an appointment basis and offer both a routine and complex/referral surgical service.

Kindly see our website on .exoticsurgicalservices.co.za for more information.
