Princess Mia working hard on her hindquarter strengthening! 💪

Here she is challenging herself with exercises on a unstable surface.

Mia first came to us with an injury to her disc in her lower neck. Thanks to her dedicated mom and being the tough cookie that she is, she has rehabilitated very well and undergoes regular maintenence treatments to keep her in good health.

Some relaxing Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM) focusing on the myofascial tissue on the over the hindlimbs.

Myofascial tissue is a sheath, a sheet or any accumulation of connective tissue that forms underneath the skin to attach, surround and separate muscles, nerves and internal organs.

It is highly innervated allowing it to assist with proprioception and regulatation of muscle function. It also provides structural supportal to organs and surrounding tissues.

When it is impaired the fascia may become dense, dehydrated and restricted in gliding over organs, muscles, etc which can restrict movement, lead to pain and functional impairment.

Sometimes even a vet physio's own pet needs a little TLC.

This is Rosie 🐶 my wire fox terrier who suffered a significant contusion on her right shoulder after a dog attack. After some laser and taping the fluid has reduced to about half in one day.

Why does this fluid form?
When there is an injury to a muscle there is an accumulation of lymph and waste products from the body breaking down the injured muscle fibres.

Sometimes it accumulates faster than the body can remove it and this can cause pressure on the thin walls of the lymph vessels that remove this fluid reducing their carrying capacity and efficacy. Reduced activity in the area can also slow down drainage of fluid as the body relies on muscle contraction and relaxation to pump the fluid into the lymph vessels and back to the heart.

Taping for lymph drainage

This can be used when your horse has
🔹️Stable oedema
🔹️Swelling from acute or chronic injury
🔹️Post surgery
🔹️Neuropathic oedema.

When your horse has had an injury or tissue irritation they will develop swelling around the area due to the natural process of inflammation. In the case of stable oedema fluid accumulates due to lack of mobility/ movement for a duration which is needed to pump the fluid back to the heart as lymph vessels lack muscular wall or valves.

The static accumulation of lymph fluid in a area can cause
🔹️Discomfort as it increases pressure in the area
🔹️Can restrict the movement of the adjacent joints
🔹️Affect the removal of waste products from the injury
🔹️Can cause thinning of the skin and deterioration of the lymph vessels in prolonged and or severe cases.

Kinesiotaping can aid the drainage of lymph away from the area to restore balance over a prolonged duration.
