Attention Horse Clients, Owners & Handlers

You are all concerned about the recent confirmation of African Horse Sickness (AHS) that led to a foal’s death in Blanco, George. The affected case involves a 6-month-old foal with an unknown vaccination history that arrived from the Johannesburg area and tragically succumbed to African Horse Sickness.
The Control of AHS is very important, especially in the controlled areas of the Western Cape, and generally consists of:

1. Movement Restrictions: All equine movements within and out of the infected property are halted immediately. This includes a prohibition on moving horses directly into the Western Cape's AHS Control Zones from the infected zone. Instead, horses must undergo a stop-over quarantine of at least 14 days (often 40 days) at an approved facility outside the control area under the supervision of a local State Veterinarian. After this period, they are tested to confirm they are free of AHS before being allowed entry into the control zones.

2. Vaccinations: To ensure that horses receive optimal protection against AHS.

3. Surveillance and Monitoring: Enhanced surveillance is conducted within the infected zone and adjacent areas to detect any new cases promptly. This involves regular inspections and monitoring by State and private veterinarians to ensure early detection and control of the disease.

Our key recommendations to our clients at this point in time:
A 40-day surveillance period is now in effect within a 30km radius of the confirmed case, until further notice. Movement in the AHS infected part of the country (in other words outside of the controlled area) is however NOT restricted - in other words there is no restriction for horses moving from Joburg or PE or KZN into George at any time of the year. That is not controlled under law, although we recommend responsible movements only when necessary for at least 2 weeks to help contain the disease until further investigation/s.

A: Movement & Disease Monitoring
Please only move horses when neccessary to prevent any possible further spread of AHS. Monitor your horses daily for any signs of illness such as fever, respiratory distress, or unusual behavior. If you observe any concerning symptoms, contact our veterinary team immediately for prompt assessment and care.

B: Vector Control
● Insect Management: Implement immediate insect control measures around your stables and paddocks. We can advise on the use of approved insecticides and help identify and manage potential insect breeding sites.

C: Enhanced Biosecurity Measures
Isolate new or returning horses until their health status is confirmed to minimize any risk of disease introduction. We can assist you in implementing robust biosecurity protocols tailored to your property.

D: Vaccinations & Preventive Care
● Vaccination Review: Verify your horse’s vaccination status and discuss any necessary updates or booster requirements with our vets. We provide vaccination services to ensure your horses receive optimal protection against AHS and other diseases.

Your proactive participation is critical in managing this situation and protecting our equine community. We commit to offer support, answer your questions, and provide the veterinary services you need during this surveillance period and beyond.

For further personalized advice or information, to schedule a consultation, or to receive any of the services mentioned, please contact us at 044 874 4259 or visit the George Animal Hospital.

Stay safe and vigilant.

Laceration repair in veterinary medicine is a common procedure that involves cleaning and closing a wound to facilitate healing and prevent infection.
• Initially, the area around the laceration is cleaned and disinfected, often after clipping away any fur that might obstruct the view of the wound.
• The veterinarian will then assess the depth and severity of the laceration to determine the best course of action.
• Local anesthetics may be administered to minimize discomfort for the animal during the procedure.
• Depending on the size and location of the wound, either absorbable or non-absorbable sutures are used to stitch the layers of tissue back together, ensuring proper alignment and tension to promote optimal healing.
