Just a dog โ tied to a rope, waiting for someone to care.
He was only brought to us when the wounds on his neck became too severe to ignore: infected and raw from where the rope had cut into his skin over time.
The image may get hidden by Facebook. But his suffering was too deep to erase.
With the owner's consent, we ended that suffering the only way we could. Giving him peace was the only kindness left.
The PDSA does not have the power to prosecute. We can only treat, comfort and speak out. The SPCA, who we work with closely, carries the burden of enforcement.
The law โ the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 โ is clear. It states that a person commits an offence if they confine, chain, tether or secure โany animal unnecessarily or under such conditions or in such a manner or position as to cause that animal unnecessary suffering or in any place which affords inadequate space, ventilation, light, protection or shelter from heat, cold or weatherโ.
No animal should be tethered or confined in a way that causes suffering. Yet, for many, that suffering is invisible until itโs too late.
This story is not just about one dog. It is about every animal living in silence, chained in backyards and on balconies, slowly fading while the world walks by.
Your voice can be the only chance those animals have.
If you see a dog permanently tethered without access to water, food or shelter, please report it to the SPCA on 044 878 1990 (after-hours 082 378 7384). They often begin with education and an opportunity to fix the conditions. If that fails, they will act.
We thank every supporter, every donor and every concerned citizen who stands up for animals. Without you, we are powerless. With you, we can save lives โ and prevent tragedies like this one happening again.
For his sake, for all their sakes, please donโt look away.
