Dear LARGE BREED PUPPY owner = Hip Dysplasia !!
Hip dysplasia is a far too common disease that is affected by factors such as genetics, diet, environment, exercise, growth rate, muscle mass and hormones.
We normally detect it too late - hence when the animals are fully grown and the changes are advanced , and it is a horribly debilitating disease !! Much can be done though - as long as it is done before 5 months of age - yes 5 months !!
- Please take your puppy for a check up at 3 months ( at the 2nd or 3rd vaccination ) and specifically request a hip laxity exam.
- Xrays might be suggested to determine the level of laxity
- Surgery has to ideally be done before 5 months of age for BEST OUTCOME ( P***s symphysiodesis / TPO )
- Neuter only when fully grown - so ideally closer to 15-18 months of age !!
- 83% of pups treated early enough develop into NORMAL pain free adulthood !!

Case of the week for Eden Small Animal Hospital.
This week we look at Spondylosis in dogs.
This is a degenerative disease (generally in older patients) It is normally just due to wear and tear over the years on the ligaments that connect the spine together. Stress and strain on these ligaments cause tiny tears. The body then tries to compensate by laying down new bone on the ends of the vertebrae. This is to stabilize the spine. In severe cases these bony changes can cause "bridging. " In most cases there is no sign of these changes taking place, however, changes in walk, movement and comfort, especially over the back can be indicators.
Diagnosis is with a Radiograph (x-ray)
There are a few treatment options available however we believe it best to discuss these with one of our vets. #2 #4 #3 #1

VOMITING !! 4 dogs, one morning and all 4 vomiting severely ... It is not always a tummy bug ... If they vomit repeatedly, PLEASE SEEK help ... MISCHA had swallowed a bone and it got stuck in her chest just above her heart, KODA had a severe megaesophagus (esophagus does not contract and lies in the chest like a bag and can't move food into the stomach), BABY puppy had a congenital megaesophagus (hence born with an abnormal flaccid esophagus) and CLEO decided chewing and swallowing her new toy, was the best course of action. Radiographs and endoscopy were done on all of them and only Cleo needed surgery - but all 4 fur babies are doing well and all but one are back home already !!

Meet Angel, she is a very special cat. She has what we call chimerism. Notice she has one blue eye and one green. A chimera cat is born when two separate embryos fuse together in the mother cat's womb at a very early stage of development. The new embryo has four sets of parent cells instead of the normal two (one set from mom and one from dad) so it's basically two genetically distinct cats in one body. Vomiting !! When do we worry ? The answer is - ALWAYS !!
There are so many different causes for vomiting in our animals and some are easily cured, and others are life threatening. With MISCHA - this lovely 11yr old GSD, non-productive vomiting was caused by a torsion of her stomach ( GDV ). The xray clearly shows the bloated twisted stomach and emergency surgery and intensive treatment allowed her to go home 3 days later and she is living the life..
The rule = always treat vomiting with caution, a single episode is generally okay but if it persists - please phone your vet immediately..

Millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized annually in community shelters or suffer as strays. The most important being that your pet will live a much healthier and possibly longer life. For the rest, we recommend talking to Dr Susi. she can give you the other 9 benefits.

Meet big Mr Rocco. 3 Months ago, this dog came in collapsed and weak - yet still very aggressive but VERY sick .. He was diagnosed with LYMPHOMA cancer (yes , the same form that humans get) and after discussing all the options, the owners opted for intense chemotherapy. His protective character was initially a stumbling block, but he has since evolved into a gentle goof ball. He had his 3 month check up this week - just look at the size of the LYMPH NODES !! They are practically normal. This boy is flying and we have far to go, but he has shown us, he wants to live .. Thank you Rocco for charming your way into our hearts !!

Meet brave Miss ZEVA. She first came in January this year after suffering with a itching scabbed skin and after having treated with multiple treatment ( cortisones and antibiotics ) with little lasting effect. The underlying cause was FOOD ALLERGIES that led to secondary ulceration/ infection / scabbing and severe itching and pain over her whole body. By modulating (not halting) her immune system, changing her diet and with the care of her incredibly devoted owner, Zeva was "discharged" today and in place of the anxious painful nervous cat, there is now a cuddling purring affectionate cat !! Remember the SKIN is also an ORGAN and is more than often part of the underlying disease process and it should not be ignored ...

🐾🛁 Grooming a Double coated dog: Do's and Don'ts 🐾🛁
For today Eden Small Animal Hospital would like to dive into the wonderful world of grooming double coated dogs such as Huskies, Malamutes, Chows and even Toy Poms to mention a few. Read on as we unleash some important do's and don'ts. With their gorgeous double coats and majestic appearance, these breeds require special care to keep them looking and feeling their best. Here are some tips to help you out:
❗️DON'T ignore regular brushing: Invest in a good quality slicker brush and make it a bonding session with your furry friend!
✅ DO practice good bathing habits: Keep their ears protected during baths to minimize water and soap entry.
❗️DON'T shave your double coated dog (unless advised by a professional): These coats offer natural temperature regulation, making them more susceptible to sunburn and overheating if shaved.
✅ DO pay attention to their nails: If you're unsure about trimming them yourself, consult us or a professional groomer for assistance.
❗️DON'T neglect their dental hygiene: Maintaining proper dental care is crucial for overall health and prevents tartar buildup and keeps your dogs gums healthy.
✅ DO pay attention to their ears: Regular ear checks are crucial, especially for these breeds as they are prone to ear infections. Clean their ears gently with a dog-approved ear cleaning solution and cotton balls to eliminate wax buildup and potential infections. Remember to be gentle and never insert anything deep into their ear canal.
If you have any specific concerns or need additional guidance, don't hesitate to reach out to our team at the veterinary facility that cares about the wellbeing of your pets. With love, patience, and proper care, we will help your Husky stay happy, healthy, and stunningly beautiful! 🐺💙

Debunking Common Vaccination Myths: Why Vaccinations are Crucial for Your Pet's Health 🐾💉

Introduction:
As a responsible pet owner, ensuring your furry friend's health and well-being is a top priority. Vaccinations play a crucial role in protecting your pet from a variety of potentially deadly diseases. Unfortunately, misinformation about vaccines abounds, leading to confusion and skepticism among pet owners. Let's debunk some common vaccination myths and highlight the importance of vaccinations for your beloved companion.

Myth #1: Vaccines Cause Harmful Side Effects
One of the most pervasive myths surrounding pet vaccinations is that they can cause harmful side effects. While it's true that vaccines, like any medical intervention, can sometimes lead to mild side effects such as soreness or mild fever, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Serious adverse reactions to vaccines are extremely rare, and the protection they provide against life-threatening diseases is invaluable.

Myth #2: Natural Immunity Is Sufficient Protection
Some pet owners believe that allowing their pets to build natural immunity through exposure to diseases is preferable to vaccination. However, this approach is risky and can result in severe illness or even death. Vaccines stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against specific diseases in a controlled and safe manner, providing a much safer alternative to natural infection.

Myth #3: Vaccinations Are Only Necessary for Puppies and Kittens
While it's true that puppies and kittens require a series of vaccinations to build immunity, the protection provided by vaccines doesn't last a lifetime. Just like humans, pets need regular booster shots to maintain their immunity against infectious diseases. Failure to keep up with vaccination schedules can leave your pet vulnerable to preventable illnesses.

Myth #4: Indoor Pets Don't Need Vaccinations
Even if your pet spends the majority of its time indoors, it's still at risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Many pathogens, such as parvovirus and feline leukemia virus, can be transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces or even through the air. Vaccinating your indoor pet is essential for protecting its health and preventing the spread of disease to other pets in the household.

Importance of Vaccinations:
Vaccinations are a cornerstone of preventive healthcare for pets, helping to safeguard their health and well-being throughout their lives. By vaccinating your pet according to international recommendations, you're not only protecting your furry friend but also contributing to the overall health of your community by preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

Conclusion:
Don't let misinformation cloud your judgment when it comes to your pet's health. Vaccinations are a safe and effective way to protect your beloved companion from a host of potentially deadly diseases. Call Eden Small Animal Hospital to develop a vaccination schedule tailored to your pet's individual needs, and rest assured knowing that you're taking proactive steps to keep your furry friend happy and healthy for years to come.

Remember, a vaccinated pet is a healthy pet! 🐾💉
