Just a reminder on shaving double coated dogs.
Dogs are extraordinary in their ability to love us unconditionally, yet they live in a world where they cannot speak for themselves. They can’t tell us when they’re in pain, uncomfortable, or suffering. As pet owners, we must listen to them in ways beyond words—by observing, understanding, and doing what’s best for their health and well-being.
Lately, my heart has been heavy. Every summer, I see dogs suffering, not because their owners don’t care, but because they simply don’t know the damage being done. Many well-meaning owners believe shaving their double-coated dogs will help them stay cool, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. What’s intended as an act of love can unintentionally cause:
Heatstroke: Stripping them of their natural cooling system
Painful sunburns: Exposing their sensitive skin to harmful UV rays
Permanent damage to their coat: Some coats never grow back the same, leaving them vulnerable for life
Double-coated dogs—breeds like Labradors, Huskies, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, Pomeranians, and many more—are born with a coat that’s designed to protect them from both heat and cold. Shaving them robs them of that protection, leaving them vulnerable to suffering. Imagine living in a body you can’t change, stripped of your natural defenses, and unable to tell anyone how much it hurts.
It devastates me when, despite explaining this to clients, some still insist on shaving their dogs. I know they love their pets deeply, but love without understanding can sometimes lead to harm. And that’s why I can’t stand by and let these dogs suffer. I can’t allow it to happen at Ruda’s Grooming.
We are making a stand: No double-coated dogs will be shaved here.
This isn’t just about grooming—it’s about respect, compassion, and doing what’s right for those who cannot speak for themselves. These dogs trust us to take care of them, and that means preserving their health, not compromising it for convenience or aesthetics.
Summer has arrived, and I know how tempting it can be to think that shaving your dog will help them beat the heat. But please—before you make that choice, understand the risks. Let’s be their voice. Let’s protect them, not just with love, but with knowledge.
