From going for a ride to dancing like no one is watching, here are some ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day with the four-legged love of your life.

1. Indulge in a spa day. A relaxing bath, blow dry and mani-pedi sounds heavenly, doesn’t it? Recreate that experience for yourself and then do the same for your dog with some leisurely grooming time. Since most cats don’t like water, try a gentle brushing session instead. Why not give Lorraine a call at Lexi’s Perfect Pooches on +27 71 858 9582 for a spa day?

2. Go for a picnic (weather permitting). Take your leashed and harnessed travel-friendly dog or cat down to the local park and bring a picnic stocked with treats for both of you. Too cold to have a picnic where you live? Bundle up and take your dog for a long walk. And if you live near a Starbucks, stop in afterwards for a warm beverage (for you) and a Puppuccino for your pup.

3. Take a spin. Who doesn’t need to get out of the house these days? If those four walls are closing in on you, leash up your dog (or your harness-loving cat) and go for a drive to somewhere beautiful. A change of scenery always does you a world of good.

4. Wine and craft night. Pull out your art supplies and pour a glass of vino to unleash your inner Picasso. Pets can have unexpected talents, too, and the video above can help get them started on a masterpiece. Prefer not to paint? Make your pet a flower crown.

5. Bake some sweet treats. Make yourself something to satisfy that sweet tooth and a healthy something extra for your pooch, too, using special recipes just for them. Another idea: Bake some cookies or cupcakes for the hardworking men and women at your local shelter and show them some love.

These are not things that you should consider doing just one day a year but consider doing these things on a regular basis. Your beloved pets will be so grateful for it.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, we know that, as a loving pet parent, you want to keep them safe, no matter what!

One of the most popular gifts for Valentine’s Day is chocolates. While we may love them, chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats. Many of these yummy chocolates and sweets contain other toxic ingredients such as nuts, xylitol and alcohol. Hard candies are a potential hazard since our pets can choke on them, and they may also contain toxic ingredients. Lastly, the wrappers that all these yummy treats come in can cause choking, stomach irritation, and bowel obstruction if swallowed. So keep them out of reach and in a secured container.

Getting a beautiful bouquet or a lovely plant will brighten anyone’s Valentine’s Day, but it’s important to know that some flowers and plants can be harmful and even poisonous to our pets. Some common varieties that are popular for Valentine’s Day but are dangerous for dogs and cats include (but aren’t limited to): Baby’s Breath, Roses, Various Types of Lilies, Daffodils, Ferns, Hydrangea, Impatients, Lilly-of-the-Valley, Hyacinth, Tulips, Rubber Plants.

Use these safety tips to help protect your pets:
* Be sure to request and send pet-safe plants and flowers.
* Remove Thorns - thorns can cause serious puncture wounds if chewed or swallowed. Be sure to remove the thorns from roses and dispose of them in a safe place where your pets can’t get to the scraps.
* Place your plants and flowers in high locations.
* Take extra precautions since cats can get, well everywhere, and often love gnawing on foliage. Hang your plant from the ceiling, place it on a wall shelf away from any kitty launching pads, or even put it in a glass cabinet or under a decorative wire cage.

We have been blessed with good rainfall over the past few weeks but thunderstorms can be a source of immense fear and stress for some pet's. Here are some tips to help keep your anxious pet calm during this thunderstorm season:

* Give CalmEze Plus at least 2 hours before the stressful event – please remember that there is very little that can calm a pet that already has adrenaline and cortisol rushing through their veins, so it’s important to give medications before signs of anxiety are seen.
• Keep pets in a well-lit room.
• Keep all curtains drawn to shelter them from any flashing lights or lightning.
* Play music loudly enough to drown out the sound of the thunder.
* Sit with your pets but try to carry on as normal. They can sense when you become tense.

Additional things to remember:
Please remember to place a tag on your pet’s collar to ensure you’re easily reached if they accidentally escape the yard.
Microchipping your pet will ensure that you get contacted should your pet end up at a veterinary practice or shelter.
Please ensure all escape routes are properly closed off and that anxious pets are under constant supervision by someone.

We stock delicious reVITALISE CBD infused dog biscuits and cat butter, as well as Calmeze tablets, liquid and a gel. Both are nutritional aids that promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety in dogs and cats. Rescue Remedy for Pets is also an option and is available at Dischem.

If your pet needs something stronger, please call us on (011) 974 5201 and make an appointment to see one of our doctors.

If you are looking for a puppy or kitten, why not choose to adopt?

Adopting a pet is all about giving pets a second chance for a forever home that they deserve. The sad reality is that thousands of pets are euthanised simply because too many pets come into shelters/rescue centres and too few are adopted out. When you adopt, you save a pet’s life and open up a shelter space for another unwanted pet, who desperately need it. Adoption fees normally include the cost of sterilising and vaccinating the adopted pet and possibly even a microchip.

In addition to the love and companionship shelter/rescue pets provide us, they also teach us what matters most in life. They teach us not to judge a book by its cover and how to be positive and hopeful as the darkest clouds can clear to reveal the most beautiful rainbows. They teach us how to love unconditionally and how this world still has many good people in it that we can trust.

Whether you adopt a pet from a rescue or shelter or buy one from a breeder, make sure that you are dealing with an organisation or breeder who has the best interests of these animals at heart.

Go to https://www.hillspet.co.za/shelter-program for more information. Or consider adopting from the SPCA or one of the resce centres we support!
