June is International Scoliosis Month — but did you know spinal issues are a serious concern for our four-legged friends too?

🐶 Dachshunds, Corgis, and Pekingese are prone to IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), while large breeds like Dobermans and Great Danes may suffer from Wobbler Syndrome.

🏥 At Cottage Vet, we offer advanced diagnostics including MRI and CT scans, and we perform spinal surgery onsite. Early detection is key — if your pet is showing signs of back pain, weakness, or trouble walking, don’t wait. Please contact us for an evaluation.

📖 Want to know more about IVDD and how to protect your pet? Read our latest blog post: 🔗 https://www.cottagevet.co.za/ivdd/

📍 We welcome referrals from across the Western Cape region.

🐾 As the cold weather rolls in, it’s important to keep our furry friends warm, dry, and safe. Yes animals also feel the cold! Here are some quick tips:

🧣 Provide cozy bedding away from drafts and wet weather
🌧️ Keep pets dry — wet fur can lead to chills and illness
🧤 Limit outdoor time during freezing weather
🐕‍🦺 Consider a pet sweater or coat for short-haired or small breeds but also be attentive to your pet while they wear these
🥶 Watch for signs of cold stress like shivering or lethargy

At Cottage Vet, we’re here to help with any winter wellness concerns. Book your pet’s seasonal check-up today!

June 8 is World Wellness Day — and our pets are a huge part of our mental well-being. 💚

🐾 Pets reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and offer unconditional love. But did you know they can also experience mental health challenges?

🐶 Anxiety is one of the most common conditions we see in pets — often showing up as pacing, vocalising, destructive behaviour, or hiding.

🏥 If your pet seems unsettled, a veterinary check-up is the first step. Together, we can rule out medical causes and create a plan to help them feel safe and secure - because wellness goes both ways. 💚

🐍 As snakes prepare to hibernate this season, it’s important to stay alert and keep your pets safe!

Although snakes are less active, they can still be encountered in your yard or during outdoor walks.
🔹 Keep pets on a leash when outside
🔹 Avoid tall grass and woodpiles where snakes may hide
🔹 Watch for sudden limping, swelling, or unusual behaviour in your pet
🔹 Contact us immediately if you suspect a snake bite.

At Cottage Vet, we’re ready to provide prompt care if your pet encounters a snake. Keep our telephone number ready (021) 856-2746.

Stay safe and be prepared!

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our favourite breeds – the Labrador Retriever! Friendly, loyal, and full of life, Labs make amazing companions…but they do have a few health concerns we like to keep an eye on:

🦴 Hip & Elbow Dysplasia – Screen at 1 year for early joint care
⚠️ Cruciate Disease – Labs are sadly prone to knee injuries, but we do offer advanced surgical solutions
👂 Ear Infections – Their adorable floppy ears can trap moisture and lead to infections and require regular checks & cleaning

Drop a pic and tell us the name of your Lab - we’d love to meet them!
