A dog we treated recently had a chew bone stuck in the oesophagus— a painful and dangerous situation. Thankfully to our endoscope (the only one in the Helderberg!), we were able to remove it without invasive surgery.

Feeding bones may seem natural, but the risks — blockages, broken teeth, internal injuries — often outweigh the benefits and can cause serious harm to your pet.

Dr Ingrid explains more in her latest blog, including safer alternatives for your pets ➡️ https://www.cottagevet.co.za/should-you-feed-your-dog-bones/

Please do take the time to read this one! Don’t guess when it comes to your pet’s health.

These are bladder stones removed from a patient at Cottage Vet.

They may look small, but they can cause serious pain, difficulty urinating, and even life-threatening blockages.

Bladder stones form when minerals build up in the urinary tract — and they often go unnoticed until your pet shows worrying symptoms.

Early detection through routine check-ups and diagnostic imaging, bladder stones can often be managed or even prevented before they become an emergency. Dr Ingrid has put together a blog post answering all these questions — and more ➡️ https://www.cottagevet.co.za/bladder-stones/

Worms aren't just a pet problem — they can affect your whole family.

Internal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms are not just unpleasant; they can cause serious illness in pets and may even spread to humans.

How Often Should You Deworm?
🐾 Puppies and kittens: Every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months old.
🐾 Adult pets: Every 3–6 months, or more often if needed.
🐾High-risk pets: Pets that hunt, roam, live on farms, or are in contact with children may need more frequent worm prevention.
🐾 Zoonotic risks mean prevention protects you, too

Worm prevention is a vital part of responsible pet ownership. By keeping up with a regular deworming schedule, you’re protecting your pet from illness and safeguarding your family from zoonotic disease.

Our latest blog is packed with helpful tips and schedules to keep your pet’s worm-free:👉 https://www.cottagevet.co.za/worm-prevention/

Caring for a Regal Breed. With their luxurious coats, gentle personalities, and royal attitude, Persian cats are truly one of a kind. But behind all that fluff is a breed that needs a little extra TLC to stay happy and healthy.

✨ Here’s what every Persian parent should know:
🧼 Grooming: Daily brushing is a must to prevent matting and hairballs.
👁️ Eye care: Their flat faces can cause tear staining and discharge - regular cleaning helps.
🐾 Skin health: Sensitive skin and thick coats mean they’re prone to irritation and infections.
🧬 Genetic concerns: Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and breathing issues are common in the breed.
🩺 Routine vet care: Early screening and regular checkups can catch issues before they become serious.

Got a Persian at home? Let’s keep them purring and pristine. Check out our blog post for interesting tips: https://www.cottagevet.co.za/persian-cats/
