Flamingo rescue! 💟 Big thanks to Louis! He rescued this beautiful bird from Voëlvlei / Gouritzmond. He found the flamingo stuck in a fence. We will know more after the vet visit.

Daily reminder that Turtles are not “inside” their shells. They *are* their shells.
A tortoise/turtle shell contains nerves that connect to its central nervous system. So they can feel pain and pleasure when their shells are touched, stroked, knocked, dropped, or injured.
Contrary to what many people believe the shell is an inseparable part of their anatomy, forming part of its skeletal structure. The ribs and spine are fused inside the shell and contain nerves connected to the nervous system.
Take away - be gentle with your tortoise and give their shell a stroke, they will probably enjoy it 🐢

The Egyptian Vulture, also known as the "Pharaoh's Chicken," is one of the most fascinating birds in the world! 🦅
Sadly, Egyptian Vultures are endangered due to habitat loss, poisoning, and other human-related threats. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these incredible birds.

One fascinating fact about Egyptian Vultures is their use of tools, which is exceptionally rare among birds. These intelligent vultures are known to pick up stones and use them to break open the hard shells of ostrich eggs, demonstrating remarkable problem-solving abilities.
This behaviour showcases their adaptability and intelligence, setting them apart as one of the few avian species capable of using tools in the wild.

These glue traps are horrible!! 🤧

This Common Five-lined Skink was admitted earlier this week on a glue trap. After just 48 hours in care, this patient was returned home!

Glue traps cause horrific suffering for target and non-target victims as they work by trapping an animal, but not actually killing it. This means animals struggle to get free as they dehydrate or starve over a few days or longer.

Luckily, this skink was brought in for care and able to be quickly removed from the trap with sedation. Once freed and cleaned, the patient needed two days to rehydrate prior to release.

It is important that animals on traps come to rehabilitators for removal as we can perform this task as stress-free as possible using species-specific techniques and sedation. Please do not try to remove the animal prior to admission – simply cover the remaining sticky portion of the trap with shredded tissue, cornmeal, dirt, or whatever non-toxic material you have around. This will prevent the animal from getting stuck in new places. Then cover the trap and animal with a hand towel and keep it somewhere warm, dark, and quiet until it can be received by a permitted rehabilitator.

If an animal frees themselves in the process of struggling, it is still best to get them to a rehabilitator for evaluation as many of these animals need further care. Some may have suffered wounds or even fractures during their struggle while others may need assistance with rehydration (when animals are severely dehydrated, as in humans, oral rehydration that they can accomplish on their own is often inadequate and subcutaneous or intravenous fluids are required).

Please do not use these awful traps and encourage your friends and family to discontinue any ongoing use!
