Gin trap : Animal trapping, or simply trapping or gin, is the use of a device to remotely catch an animal. Animals may be trapped for a variety of purposes, including food, the fur trade, hunting, pest control, and wildlife management.

Any weight placed on the flat piece of metal between the toothed jaws would trigger the trap and the jaws would snap shut. It is believed that gin comes from the word engine, meaning a device that did not require human intervention to make it work.

Gin-traps are widely and in many countries legally used for 'problem-animal control', targeted primarily at mammalian carnivores, in many places around the world, including South Africa.

Besides the obvious, the biggest problem with these traps, like many other, is that they are indiscriminate and often catch critically indangered animals like wild dogs and leopard.

When rangers come across old traps in the bush, they are immediately removed.

Snare Poacher Caught “Red Handed!”

Our anti-poaching unit, the .game.reserve - unit, successfully tracked down a suspected snare/meat poacher after he was spotted killing a warthog in a snare.

The team utilized K9 Cyrus, donated to the unit by , who was put on the tracks and lead the team straight to the suspect.

Great team effort by all involved! It takes years and multiple layers of support to sustain and maintain an anti-poaching unit. From training and professional certifications, to salaries, vehicles, and the “daily grind” it is no small task.

We would like to share our thanks with as well for their collaboration on our units ongoing K9 training in the field. The team recently spent days training alongside other handlers and K9s in various scenarios to keep their skillsets sharp.

What a privilege to work in such historic places.

Pongolapoort Dam, commonly referred to as Lake Jozini, is an arch type dam (double-curvature single-arch[1]) in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa located on the Phongolo River. The dam is situated 280 km north-east of the port city of Durban. The dam was constructed in 1973 at the eastern end of the narrow gorge separating the Lebombo and Ubombo ranges. The dam mainly serves for irrigation purposes and its hazard potential has been ranked high (3). The Phongolo River is the dams largest feeder as well as the dams only perennial feeder.

Prior to the construction of the Pongolapoort Dam the land was Africa's first formally recognised conservation area. The Pongola Game Reserve was proclaimed in 1894 by the then President of the Transvaal Republic Paul Kruger. This would ultimately lead to the proclamation of the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, Mkuze and Ndumo Game Reserves as well as one of Africa's greatest wildlife conservation parks, the Kruger National Park.

Happy dog, happy handler.

Do you think there has to be a strong bond between dog and handler to be effective?

Blake and his handler happy after completing a tracking exercise. We started very late with Blakes tracking, as his application necessities changed. So far things are going very well, his handler reads him well and our big boy Blake pulls like a steam train.

Kali doing her first mid-air helicopter disembark at 5 months old. Such gumption.

Here is a sneak peak of the awesome footage we received from Wildhood Foundation. They sponsor the working dogs and the kennels for Kilo9 Kennels working with the Greater Kruger Park anti-poaching teams.

Amazing meeting people from all over the world with the same goal. Thank you On The Wild Side for your interest and efforts.

Poaching in Africa is a serious business. Many of the people we interviewed in the last week, referred to the situation as "a war on the rhinos", "a war against wildlife", or in other similar ways.

To fight poaching, many tactics have to be used.
We interviewed ground troops and air support, and another huge role in this battle to protect wildlife is the use of K9 units.

We interviewed Simone and Chris who are establishing Kilo9 Kennels.
Kilo 9 has the goal to train dogs that are going to be deployed on the field in support of the ground anti poaching troops, and will be able to detect illegal wildlife product, fi****ms and to deter poachers as well as non lethally disable them.

Out trip through South Africa continues, stay tuned to see the many reality present on the ground to fight the illegal killing of animals.

This is Zee. She is looking for a home. Her days of being a working dog is over. She is getting a little old and needs to spend her last years in a home and with a family.
She is a great protection dog and will still defend the family who chooses to take her.
She has a lovely nature and is a sucker for affection.
Please share and help us get her the home she deserves after her time served.

We are so honoured and happy to have been called in to consult on the adventures of Esme and David.
David is a Central Asian Shepherd pup who was pared up with Esme the baby rhino with the goal of becoming her guardian angel.
Central Asian Shepherds is an ancient breed developed for the main purpose of guarding live stock.
A pup would be places with the herd from an early age and it would grow up thinking himself one of them. They are an exceptionally large breed so they automatically become the protectors of the herd against any given threat.
This is the first time in history that this formula has been tried with a pup and a rhino but both their future together looks bright.
Animals protecting animals!

David and Esmé spend every waking moment together, and are forming quite a bond. Esmé follows David around whenever they are let out of the boma. They both enjoy being in the sun. We are happy to see Esmé doing well, and we are glad we could help this little one.

Our Janka girl is making amazing progress! As you might know we got her at one year of age with no previous training. We have now only had her a few months. Most of her time with us was spent building up her fragile confidence and desensitizing her to the world. When we were happy with her change we started training and it is coming on amazingly. She has a natural instinct to please and be loved.
Thank you to Tina for her input, time and love for our dogs while Chrisjan and I am away. It is very clear that they love you.

It is official. Bandit from will soon be joining our pack. The biggest thank you to for making this happen.
My friend you have no idea what this means to us, my brothers and all the wildlife we fight for.
You are a man of you're word and so much more.

The contribution Bandit will make to wildlife conservation is huge. Not only will he be ready to work on the frontline but his genetics and training will also help us raise more dogs to help in this fight.
We have immense passion for dogs and promise to take the best care of him. Dogs are not just tools to us. They are brothers and sisters, colleagues and soldiers.

We are forever grateful

From everyone on the frontline, thank you for making this happen.
Hope to see you soon 🇫🇮🇿🇦🐺
