Martin Fick, Managing Director of Salem Agribusiness (PTY) Ltd in Grahamstown, South Africa, established Homegrown Practical Aquaponics (HPA) in 2012 as a division of his business with the intention to design, supply and install cost effective, sustainable food production systems in the Southern African region. With a good knowledge of the Sub Saharan conditions, lifestyles and challenges, HPA str

ives to be the leader and preferred supplier of modular aquaponic systems, components and know-how with the goal of empowering people to produce their own healthy food. Gary Burgess joined HPA in October 2013 after a career in establishing large scale commercial aquaponics. We design for and offer support, training and mentorship to clients who have interest in personal, home-use systems or large-scale modular commercial aquaponic operations. HP Aquaponics have designed our systems, training courses, mentorship programmes and the general running of our business with the specific aim of limiting the barriers to entry and maximise return for clients, whether it be food security or economic success. Our models for larger scale commercial oparations employ a modular approach which enables you to grow and build on success.

❄️❄️ SA SNOW STORY | 1 – 4 June 2024 ❄️❄️

☃️❄️☃️2 DAYS TO GO UNTIL THE FIRST WIDESPREAD SNOW OF THE SEASON ☃️❄️☃️

𝗡𝗕! 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁!

Freezing levels are expected to significantly drop FROM SATURDAY (1 June 2024) as STRONG CUT-OFF LOW is expected to bring RAIN, SNOW, and a SIGNIFICANT DROP IN TEMPERATURE across the Cape Provinces, Lesotho, central SA and our neighboring country NAMIBIA.

𝗦𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗬 (𝟭 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲): The first snow will start falling on Saturday around the escarpment and the high-lying areas in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape ( near Molteno and Philipstown). This will be a mixture of snow and rain and therefor it might quickly melt.

𝗦𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬(𝟮 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲): A mixture of light snow and rain is possible in our neighboring country Namibia ( around Aus, Rosh Pinah and Ai-Ais), spreading to the western and central parts of the Northern Cape (Namakwa – and Pixley Ka Seme Municipalities and over the Nuweveld mountains in the Northern Cape). More snow and rain likely over the mountains in the Eastern Cape. Snow will now also start to fall in Lesotho and over the southern Drakensberg. Significant snow is already possible around Afriski in Lesotho on Sunday continuing Monday and Tuesday.

𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬 (𝟯 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲): COLD & SNOWY Monday for South Africa! Snow will spread over the mountain peaks in the Western Cape ( Matroosberg, Cederberg, Swartberg), Northern Cape (Nuweveld and Roggeveld mountain), including the town of Sutherland, the Great Karoo and the high-lying areas in the Cape provinces (around Fraserburg, Loxton, Murraysburg, Richmond, Noupoort, Colesberg, Burgersdorp, Aliwal North, Molteno and surroundings) throughout Monday.
HEAVY SNOW (MORE THAN 10 CM) is now also possible in Lesotho (especially around Afri Ski), & between 5 – 10cm expected over the southern Drakenberg and towns near Lesotho in the Eastern Cape (Barkly East). A mixture of SNOW / ICE RAIN / SLEET is now possible over southern and eastern Free State(Bethlehem, Warden, Heilbron, Reitz, Memel, Reddersburg, Trompsburg and surrounding towns) and north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape (around Postmasburg and Kuruman). Late on Monday and into Tuesday a mixture of light SNOW / ICE RAIN / SLEET can even fall south of Bloemfontein in the Free State.
The European ECMWF weather model is even picking up the slight possibility of a dusting of SNOW falling over the southern parts of NORTH WEST and GAUTENG. NB!! It’s worth a mention that the ECMWF model tends to be overconfident and the forecast is likely to significant change as the COL moves over the country.

𝗧𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗗𝗔𝗬 (𝟰 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲): On Tuesday morning EARLY – a mixture of SNOW and RAIN is possible over the southern parts of the Free State. MORE HEAVY SNOW (another 20-40 CM) mostly confined to Lesotho and southern Drakensberg is possible.

So we have running trials for some years on different vertical production systems and this one is the best we have tried.

Very few vertical systems are successful in Aquaponics because of the presence of bio film. These towers have no media at all and so they require a UPS system.

There are Four critical factors that determine water quality and thus fish stocking density...
1. Fish Tank Water Volume
2. Rate of through flow or replacement
3. Bio filtration surface area and Bio-Remediation Capacity
4. Oxygen availability (Diffusion Potential and Dissolved Oxygen)

These and other factors must be understood and calculated in order to optimise fish production.
We provide in-depth Training Courses to ensure our clients don't fail.
