Meet Xena - Ex-Puppy Mill Dog Mom 'Wants To Give Love' and Looking for Own Forever Home
Xena is +/- 4-year-old Pitbull that was brought to us because she was struggling to give birth. At the time, we didn’t know that she had been struggling for 3 days and the puppies were actually stuck inside of her. Our team quickly realised how serious the problem was, and Xena went into emergency surgery. It was a long and complicated operation with her uterus being severely compromised and we are sad to say that all the puppies had died and as they had been stuck there for some time, they had started to decompose.
After a long struggle to get all of the puppies out, we had to sterilise her. Unfortunately, the fact that she was septic caused further complications and it took an additional two operations in the coming days to get her to a place where she could start to recover!
But here is where the story gets interesting and just shows she was nothing more than a puppy mill dog mom because we contacted her ‘owner’ after the first surgery, he seemed more worried about the puppies than Xena. And when we explained what had happened and that we had sterilised her, he said he would be in to see her…he never arrived, and just vanished and all attempts to contact him failed and we have since realised that some of the details given were completely false.
As a team we were completely stunned when we realised that Xena (who was brought to us as Ghundi) was just there to make him money and being forced to breed, her ‘owner’, obviously a backyard breeder didn’t care if she lived or died, and he left without paying a cent towards her care.
It has been a long road to walk with this beautiful and brave soul and we are happy to say that Xena has lived up to her name, she is a true Warrior Princess, and she is now 100% recovered, strong and healthy but more importantly she is ready for the next chapter in her life.
So, what can we tell you about her…she is with us in Harrismith currently but can be rehomed anywhere in the country. She would fit perfectly into a home with other (bigger) dogs. She is very well socialised, loves walks both on and off leash and she just wants to be loved. Xena will be an amazing family dog; she will do well with more training, and she really loves attention and cuddles.
Adoption applications are now open, please contact our offices on 058 622 1334 for more information. Please note that an adoption fee of R1200 will be applicable and strict home checks will be part of the process.
If you are unable to adopt, please assist us by sharing her story, we really would like to get her out of our clinic and into a family home ASAP and we are sure you will agree with us, after everything she has been through, she deserves it!
