About us:
Catherine Byrnes
I have always been involved with animals since an early age, with a keen interest in animal welfare. Following my Equine Diploma course at Pretoria Technikon, I moved to the UK. My career with equines progressed at The National Stud, Newmarket. I was employed by several other studs gaining experience before being accepted onto the RSPCA Inspectorate training course in
1999. For the past 23 years, I worked as an RSPCA Inspector in the Greater Manchester area in the UK. I have been responsible for the rescues of both domestic animals as well as wildlife. My core role as an Inspector was the investigation of animal welfare complaints of cruelty and neglect where in extreme cases, I successfully prosecuted the persons responsible. My role as a RSPCA Inspector has given me a lot of insight and experience dealing with a variety of animals that need that extra special care and attention and an understanding of their individual needs. I became involved in animal welfare at the age of 19 when I started working for an Equine Charity, HAPPA, which is based in Burnley, Lancashire, UK. I later became Chairperson of the Charity and only resigned when I moved to Hermanus in September 2022. I was also the Manager of Rochdale RSPCA Animal Shelter in Greater Manchester UK for 14 years. The shelter was home to rescued cats, dogs, and small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters etc. We also had a wildlife section with a variety of mammals and birds. The rehabilitation of the animals and the rehome or release (of wildlife) was at the forefront of what we did. I also volunteered at a local Hedgehog Rescue before moving to South Africa. I have a vast experience and knowledge in dealing with most animals and have a calm and relaxed approach.
