We have laser physiotherapy and electrophysiotherapy machines along with IV machines and anesthetic machines. The hospital also has a large variety of specialized surgery equipment that we use for hip replacements and knee alignments along with all the equipment we need for dentals. We also run puppy socialization classes. These have been running since 1994, they normally consist of 3 classes on a Wednesday evening. Sometimes held on the farm. They are entirely free of charge and are a huge benefit to your pet. The puppies build confidence in themselves and discipline. The basics and groundwork is laid down with a frame work of a happy relationship between the dog and its human family. We often have visiting veterinary students or school children who want to see a real practice and how it works. We try really hard to help them get as much practical experience as possible. We have had various overseas students as well.

Is Shaving a Dog's Coat Always Bad?

Shaving a dog's coat is a topic that often sparks debate among pet owners and groomers. Whether it's beneficial or harmful depends on several factors, including the breed of the dog, the type of coat, and the reasons for shaving. Here are some key points to consider:

# # Understanding Dog Coats

Dogs generally have one of two types of coats: single or double. A **single coat** consists of just one layer of fur, while a **double coat** has both an outer layer of longer guard hairs and a softer undercoat.

# # Reasons to Avoid Shaving

1. **Protection from the Elements**: A dog's coat provides natural insulation against both heat and cold. The undercoat traps air to keep the dog warm in the winter, while the guard hairs help protect against sunburn and overheating in the summer.

2. **Skin Health**: Shaving can expose a dog's skin to the sun, increasing the risk of sunburn and potential skin cancer. Additionally, removing the protective layers can lead to skin irritation and infections.

3. **Coat Regrowth Issues**: Shaving can sometimes cause a dog's coat to grow back unevenly or not at all, particularly in certain breeds. This can result in permanent damage to the coat’s texture and appearance.

4. **Behavioral Changes**: Some dogs may feel anxious or uncomfortable after being shaved, which can affect their behavior.

# # Situations Where Shaving May Be Necessary

1. **Medical Reasons**: In some cases, shaving may be necessary for medical procedures or to treat severe skin conditions.

2. **Severe Matting**: If a dog's coat is severely matted and cannot be safely detangled, shaving may be the only humane option.

3. **Parasite Infestation**: In situations where a dog has a severe flea or tick infestation, shaving can help in removing pests and applying treatments more effectively.

4. **Specific Breeds**: Some breeds with continuously growing hair, such as Poodles and Shih Tzus, might need regular trimming or shaving for hygiene and comfort.

# # Best Practices

- **Consult a Professional**: Before deciding to shave your dog's coat, it's best to consult with a professional groomer or veterinarian to assess your dog's specific needs.
- **Regular Grooming**: Keeping your dog's coat maintained with regular brushing and grooming can prevent issues like matting and reduce the need for shaving.
- **Alternatives to Shaving**: Consider alternatives like trimming or using cooling vests and regular baths to help your dog stay comfortable in hot weather.

In conclusion, while shaving a dog's coat is not always "bad," it's not always necessary or beneficial either. It’s crucial to consider the individual dog's needs and consult professionals when making grooming decisions.

WALK YOUR DOG MONTH: ‘Going for a stroll with your dog is enriching for both you and your pet’ – UP veterinary specialist physician

Walk Your Dog Month is observed every year in January to highlight the importance of regular exercise and outdoor activity for dogs. However, walking your dog isn’t simply about getting them outside for a quick break – it’s a powerful daily routine that offers a wide range of physical, mental and emotional benefits for both you and your pet. Whether you’re strolling through your neighbourhood or hiking a scenic trail, regular walks are one of the best ways to enhance your dog’s health and strengthen the bond between the two of you.

Physical health benefits

Walking is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise for dogs because it helps them to maintain a healthy weight (especially labradors), promotes joint mobility and reduces the risk of obesity-related conditions such as rupture of the cruciate ligaments in their knees or rupture of intervertebral discs in small breeds, like dachshunds. For energetic breeds like border collies, a good walk can burn off excess energy, preventing boredom and the destructive behaviours that often result from it.

For you, walking your dog is an easy, low-impact form of exercise. It helps improve your cardiovascular health, supports weight management and can lower stress levels. Walking outdoors exposes you to fresh air and sunlight, both of which can boost your mood and improve your overall well-being and vitamin D levels. Plus, it’s a great way to stay active without needing a gym membership or intense workouts.

Mental stimulation and emotional benefits

Walking provides mental stimulation for your canine companion by introducing them to new smells, sights and sounds. This sensory experience keeps their brain engaged and helps prevent anxiety. Exploring different environments also builds confidence in dogs, especially if they are naturally timid or shy.

For you, spending time outdoors with your dog is an opportunity to clear your mind, unwind and reduce stress. The rhythmic nature of walking, coupled with the presence of your pet, has been shown to release endorphins – natural mood boosters. Engaging with your dog during these walks can also foster a deeper emotional connection, as they’ll come to see you as a source of companionship and security.

Socialisation and routine

Going for a stroll with your four-legged friend regularly exposes them to other dogs and people, which helps with socialisation. This is especially important for puppies and young dogs, but it’s beneficial for dogs of all ages. A well-socialised dog is often more relaxed in different settings, reducing the likelihood of fearful or aggressive behaviour. Establishing a daily walking routine also provides structure and rigour to your exercise programme. Dogs thrive on routine, and regular walks can help regulate their behaviour and energy levels, leading to a calmer, happier pet.

Going for a stroll with your dog is more than just a daily chore – it’s an enriching experience for both you and your pet. It provides physical exercise, mental stimulation and emotional benefits, and strengthens your bond. So lace up your trainers, grab the leash and enjoy the many rewards of a daily walk with your furry friend!
