Dr's Maarten and Sherry van Dalsen have a combined experience in veterinary medicine of over 36 years. Dr Maarten trained in South Africa and has practiced in the UK at a variety of veterinary clinics and hospitals. Her experience is not only in general practice, but she also has similar experience in emergency and critical care. Both Dr's Maarten and Sherry fell in love with Hermanus and decided to start their own unique practice. They selected the best state of the art equipment brought over from the UK. The clinic has stainless steel kennels, digital x ray and is fully equipped to handle difficult surgical procedures. We have a special dental machine that is safe on the gums, pulse oximetry monitoring and only use the most up to date anesthetics. The clinic has IV pumps for those patients needing fluids. It ensures the patient only gets the set amount of fluids needed. Our microscope has a camera, so our clients can see what the Doctor sees when we do a blood smear, ear swab or skin scrapes. The aim of Bergview Veterinary Clinic is to provide clients with the most up to date and informative veterinary service. It is important to make pet owners an integral part of the decision process when treatment is needed. We will always be informative and do what is best for your best friend.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Hans Britz to our team. We are thrilled to have Dr. Hans on board and asked him to share a little about himself and his career. Here's what he had to say:

“Hi, I’m Dr Hans Britz! I’m excited to join the team at Bergview and Onrus Veterinary Hospital as a veterinarian. Here’s a little about me:

I grew up in a small town near Mossel Bay called Herbertsdale, where I completed primary school (Laerskool Herbertsdale) before heading to Point High School in Mossel Bay. After that, I moved to Pretoria to study Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria and graduated with my BVSc degree in January 2022.

My CCS year took me to Oudtshoorn, where I gained valuable experience in welfare work, state veterinary services, and as an export control officer at CKI Oudtshoorn’s ostrich abattoir. In 2023, I transitioned to private practice at Dana Bay Veterinary Clinic, focusing mainly on small animal care, with the occasional production animal and equine cases.

I have a keen interest in internal medicine and am currently pursuing a Professional Master’s Degree in Small Animal Internal Medicine—a fascinating journey so far.

Outside of work, I’m a proud dog parent to my Miniature Schnauzer, Blitz, who firmly believes he’s human! I also enjoy making music and spending quality time with my family and friends.

I’m thrilled to start this new chapter in Hermanus and look forward to meeting all of you—both the human and furry members of the community!”

We are deeply thankful for the invaluable contributions Dr Eulalie has made since joining us in 2022. Her unwavering passion for animal care has transformed the lives of numerous critters, while her compassionate approach has earned the trust and admiration of clients at both practices. Here's a fun activity to start the week and bond with your pup. Set your phone camera to slow motion and call your dog's name to film their reaction. Of course, you must send us the video!

Large-breed dogs often suffer from joint disease, especially later in life. Can their bed make a difference? The answer is a resounding 'yes.' A mattress that protects joints from pressure can help manage joint disease better and, more importantly, reduce pain significantly. What kind of bed will do these wonderful things for your dog? Essentially you are looking for a bed that prevents added pressure on your dog's joints - a bed where your dog's hips, knees and elbows do not push through and come in contact with the cold hard floor. The very best test is to try out the bed yourself. Lie on it, kneel, and roll around on it - if you feel that a joint touches the floor through the bed, this is not a good bed for your large dog. You can rule out specific bedding material before you even start. Beds with polyfill stuffing are widespread, but they simply do not provide the support a significant, heavy dog needs. Those joints will contact the floor, increasing the load on the pressure points. A single-layer foam mattress is also not sufficient. Depending on the quality of the foam, the foam may quickly disintegrate and compress with the rigors of supporting a large, often moving animal. Memory foam beds sound appealing, but the quality of memory foam seals the deal - once the memory foam compresses, there is little support for those sore joints. From the perspective of a large breed dog, a bed made of more than one layer of foam works better. A high-quality base layer of firm foam keeps joints from pushing through, and a top layer of softer but still good quality, foam or memory foam provides comfort. You can do a lot to increase the happy, active years of your large dog's life. Do a little research and invest in something that will last. Your dog will thank you. As always, if you are concerned about your dog's joints, let us assess your four-legged pal and get them onto a prevention or intervention plan for joint health.

Vets sometimes have to do some pretty daunting tasks! Trimming a cat's nails when the owner can't get it done, for example, can be quite the challenge - if there were Olympic events for Vets, this would certainly be one of them.

How much exercise does your cat need? Cats need exercise for many reasons. Outdoor cats often have enough opportunity and stimulation to be active, but cats that spend the day inside may need a bit of help and should get exercise through about 30 minutes active playtime a day.
