A small fun fact :
A Cockroach's brain is in its body

One of the ultimate survivors, the Cockroach, unlike most animals, can survive decapitation as its brain is not actually housed inside it, but rather inside of its body. Once decapitated a Cockroach will keep on ticking, walking around, going about its business; eventually dying from starvation as it no longer has a mouth to eat with.

In case you did not know!!!!
Signs of Grape Poisoning in Dogs

Whether your senior or adult dog or puppy ate grapes, raisins, or currants, there are certain signs you should be looking out for to determine if it’s time to take him to the vet. Signs of grape and raisin toxicity include:
• Loss of appetite
• Drinking a lot, at first
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Weakness
• Lethargy
• Bad breath
• Increased urination at first, and then a decrease in urine production when the kidneys start shutting down
• Dehydration
Typically, you’ll see symptoms between 12 and 24 hours after ingestion of grapes, raisins, or currants, or drinks grape juice.
If anything seems off about your dog, then you need to be in touch with your vet right away. If your vet’s office is closed, then make sure you take your pup to a 24/7 animal hospital for immediate treatment. Grape poisoning can lead to kidney damage and ultimately acute kidney failure and death
What Other Foods Are Toxic to Dogs?

There are other human foods that are toxic to dogs, including:
• Onions
• Chocolate
• Garlic
• Alcohol
• Cocoa
• Macadamia nuts
• Foods with xylitol in them
Again, just like with grapes, you should check the ingredients on the labels of foods you’re eating just in case they contain anything toxic. Even if you accidentally feed your dog small amounts of these foods, it could end up causing problems.
What Fruits Can Dogs Eat?

Since dogs cannot eat grapes, you’re wondering if any fruits are safe for your pup. The good news is that dogs can eat all kinds of fruits, including:
• Apples (not the seeds)
• Bananas
• Blueberries
• Pineapple
• Strawberries
• Watermelon
• Cranberries
Some dogs may have sensitivities to these foods, so it’s best to give your pup limited amounts of them and to stop feeding them if your dog seems like he’s allergic. Additionally, since fruits have sugar in them, you don’t want to give your dog too much of them at a time.
If the fruit has seeds, make sure you remove them. This is especially important for apples, since the seeds are poisonous to dogs. A good alternative for feeding your dog an apple is to give him Wholesome Pride apple slices instead. They are made with dehydrated apples and are grain-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

Leptospirosis outbreak in Highway Area
A human case of Leptospirosis has been hospitalized in Hillcrest.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases. Some infected persons, however, may have no symptoms at all.
Without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.
The bacteria that cause Leptospirosis are spread through the urine of infected animals, which can get into water or soil and can survive there for weeks to months. Humans and animals can become infected through contact with this contaminated urine (or other body fluids, except saliva), water, or soil. The bacteria that cause leptospirosis can be spread from dogs to people. This, however, does not often happen. People become infected with the bacteria the same way that dogs do - direct contact with an environment contaminated with the urine of infected animals (commonly Rats and cattle).
You can be infected if you touch fresh water, soil, or other objects contaminated with infected animal urine.
Preventative treatment would be Leptospirosis vaccinations yearly at our minimal cost of R125.00. Please call in for appointment 0317652123

The clinical signs of leptospirosis vary and are nonspecific. Sometimes pets do not have any symptoms. Common clinical signs have been reported in dogs. These include:
• Fever
• Vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Refusal to eat
• Severe weakness and depression
• Stiffness
• Severe muscle pain

26/04/2023

Red, swollen gums can be an indication of gingivitis, which is an inflammation signalling early dental disease. Although your pet may not show signs of discomfort, plaque and tartar on the teeth and at the gum line will cause redness and pain.
Gingivitis is an inflammation (redness and swelling) along the gumline where the gum contacts the tooth. Typically, there will also be bad breath (halitosis).

5 cases of Spirocerca Lupi in 1 week!!! And Milbemax is all it takes for prevention.
Spirocerca Lupi is a worm that completes its life cycle in dogs and causes severe, potentially life threatening diseases. Your fur friend can pick up this worm from eating beetles or small animals such as mice, rats, lizards or birds. These little animals can carry worm larvae which your dog ingests when eating them. The larvae are released into your dog’s digestive tract, after which they move through the intestinal walls and into your dog’s bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the worm larvae will migrate through out your dogs body resulting in disease.
Nodules within the oesophagus are initially small and grow bigger with time. As these lumps start to grow bigger, your dog may show bouts of fever, vomiting or regurgitating food due to difficulty swallowing, poor appetite, weight loss or lethargy. Some dogs become anaemic because some nodules may bleed, which can cause a very dark or even black stool due to the presence of blood in the stool. These nodules may turn cancerous and the cancer can spread to the lungs. Sudden death can occur if an aneurism in the aorta ruptures, causing your dog to bleed out in seconds.

Warning!!! Another devastating Rabies case this week. Please get your animals vaccinated. Call in for our special 031 752123
What are the signs?
First there are vague, non-specific signs such as fever, nausea or pain. Thereafter, caning rabies can take one of two forms: “furious” rabies or “dumb” rabies. In the “furious” form there is great restlessness, abnormal behaviour, salivation, weakness of the back legs and paralysis. The dog is hyper excitable and aggressive, biting even imaginary objects. In the “dumb” form, dogs show in coordination leading to paralysis, and want to hide in dark places. In both forms, there are changes in the voice and inability to swallow. In the last state, paralysis causes respiratory failure, leading to coma and death.
