Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach uplifts the lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit, South Africa’s wildlife haven, is surrounded by impoverished, rural communities, that have no access to government veterinary facilities for domestic animals. Since 2016, HALO (Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach) has worked together with the local community leaders to improve the mental and physical health of domestic animals. Seven communities, The Willows, LeBoeng, Moraba, The Oaks, Tswenyan

e, Mulalani, Manoutsa are visited every month by HALO volunteers who offer free veterinary care and education to owners. To be involved or donate, please contact [email protected] or call +27 82 692 3688.

🐕Brenda from Mulalani owns Nox and Shebra, two dogs that she loves dearly and brought to our outreach every month since they were a little puppy.

🐣Unfortunately, she was just too late to sign up Nox for her sterilisation and she got pregnant at just six months. Fortunately, we were just in time for her sister.

🩺Brenda raised the puppies well and gave them to reliable family members and now wanted to make sure Nox got her sterilisation in time before she got pregnant again. So we are planning to sterilise her this week!

Please help us spare this young dog from another unwanted litter of puppies! For just R600 we can have her sterilised. Any amount that you can spare is absolutely amazing and much appreciated ❤️

This month we have a lot of female dogs about to get pregnant or already pregnant of an unwanted litter. Sterilisation of female dogs is the only way forward and we try to make a difference.

One of those dogs is Puppy from the Willows. Not really a puppy anymore as she is already pregnant. The owner doesn’t want the puppies and asked for our urgent help to sterilise her. We were unfortunately too late for her sister who was also on the list and delivered Monday 😳

As the owner also doesn’t want those puppies we made a plan with the owner to provide dog food for the mom and pups that we will collect and rehome as soon as they are weaned off mom. Mom will at that time also be sterilised to prevent her from getting a second litter…

HALO is seeing a clear decrease in the amount of unwanted litters due to our continued presence in the communities. Only by keeping our eyes and ears on the ground can we keep improving the lives of the dogs and we need your help!

Can you help pay for the sterilisation of Puppy? Her sterilisation costs R950. Any amount big or small will go a long way! You can pay directly into our account at Provet or

🐕The not so dangerous and actually quite sweet Danger from Finale has been diagnosed with a dangerous cancer; TVT, short for Transmissible Venereal Tumours.

🦠This deadly cancer spreads quickly through sexual contact or by sniffing each other’s genitalia. It’s a death sentence for dogs like Danger but fortunately if helped, the chances of recovery are almost 100%.

💉 She will start her first treatment this week and a steri will be part of the course which will happen this week. The total costs are expected to reach R2,500 for Danger to make a full recovery.

Can you help pay for Danger’s cancer treatment? Any donation big or small is much appreciated.

🥰 This is Bob from Mulalani, a real player 🥰

Bob loves roaming around making girl friends wherever he can. And with those looks, we can see why so many girls have fallen for him. But honestly, we need those day to be over for Bob, he needs to settle down a bit and stop getting girls in trouble 🤪

HALO has booked him for a sterilisation and Thursday Bob will be in for a life changing event.

It will only cost us R500 and we hope for your help to pay for Bobs surgery. Any amount will be much appreciated!

Hoedspruit, help HALO make a difference in 2025!

Hoedspruit, help HALO make a difference in 2025!

🌟Teamwork makes the dream work! 🌟

🍀And HALO has big dreams, eliminating rabies in the communities around Hoedspruit (and beyond!), uplifting the lives of dogs by our sterilisation program, emergency help and education on animal kindness.

🙏🏻We want to thank all our volunteers and donors helping us make it through 2024 which had its big challenges but also big rewards, including our SECOND year of no rabies cases (this is BIG!!), our FIRST year of no distemper cases (!) and a definite decrease in TVT cases (though December showed a sudden influx we hope to have stopped it at the core), less dogs with tickbite fever due to our monthly visits ensuring external parasites are better controlled and better awareness of owners on rabies, parvo and other signs of sickness. More than 175 dogs have been sterilised this year and hundreds of dogs now have a collar and leash and we built over 50 runners for dogs that were chained.

🚀But we can’t sit back and relax! The need for our work is ever present and 2025 is a year we want to push forward with more steris, more vaccinations, more education and less suffering of animals.

👊🏻 And this is where we need your help! You can help in so many ways, big or small by:
* donating big or small, not only monetary but in time (we have so many lovely outreaches to join, camp dogs that need some TLC while they recover) or organising a fundraiser for us (your birthday can make a wonderful moment to ask money for HALO)
* giving us your old blankets and towels, leads and collars, dog bowls or food your dog doesn’t like to eat
* like and share our posts so we can grow our audience and earn money via social media
* becoming a foster for puppies that need temporary homes
* sharing any knowledge and experience you may have that can help our little NGO
* local businesses: we need your support! Setting up a donation box, bring your team to one of our outreaches as a team building event or lodges bring your guests to one of our outreaches to see the “real life” in the community, and offer a very hands-on opportunity to help make a change (not only to the dogs but also their family as we keep them safe from rabies but also when we identify a dog in a problem home, there is usually a bigger issue that we address with help)
* help us with baking or finding items for fundraisers we want to organise in 2025
* adopt a surrendered dog and save a life!
* and so much more!

🤞🏻Let’s make 2025 our best year yet! 🤞🏻

HALO providing basic veterinary care to dogs

For 2025 HALO has ambitious goals, making a serious change in lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit. With our vaccination and sterilisation campaigns in the Oaks, The Willows, Mulalani, Manoutsa, Finale, Sedawa, Acornhoek we keep dogs and people safe from rabies and prevent unwanted litters. With our ambulance service we prevent further suffering by arranging veterinary care for injured and ill dogs.

We can’t do it alone and need your continued support for 2025 so we can keep making a change. So let’s make 2025 a great year uplifting the lives of community dogs, we are ready!

Styx, the little boy who came in with terrible mange, is becoming more and more beautiful by the day!

His long brown coat is slowly growing back and soon he will be the handsomest puppy that he already is on the inside. Styx is around 3 months old, has had his second round of vaccinations and is just a happy, carefree puppy.

He is energetic, loves playing and eating and is exceptionally clever (not a surprise as he managed to live on the streets by himself for weeks), he loves his bed and is fully housetrained already. So all in all just a wonderful, well behaved pup! He is social with other dogs, cats unknown but as he is young he can easily be trained (he does anything for food!).

Who can give this cutie pie a much deserved forever home after his rough start in life? You won’t regret taking in this sweetheart, he is such an easy pup! And just look at those loyal eyes, this boy knows how to capture your heart ❤️

Thank you Emmanuel and for the generous donation of dog food.
HALO relies on donations to enable us to continue improving the lives of the community dogs, providing a nutritional diet for sick and injured dogs.
Many dogs in rural communities barely survive by scavenging, HALO continues to educate owners in the communities on responsible animal care, particularly providing good food.

Poor Jackie from Santeng got bitten by a venomous snake and was rushed to Provet Companion Animal Hospital this morning. He was admitted and antivenom was fortunately available at R1,700.

Jackie is a much loved and well taken care of dog so we felt we have to do everything to make sure Jackie will make a full recovery. Can you please help us pay for Jackie’s vet bill? Payment directly into our account at Provet would be much appreciated ❤️

Our last outreach of 2024 is done and dusted! HALO gave 34 never before seen dogs lifesaving vaccinations thanks to Global Alliance for Rabies Control. With the summer in full swing we saw the devastating effects of not receiving treatment for ticks and fleas:
4 dogs had severe tickbite fever with two already becoming blind and two very skinny. HALO gave them antibiotics and vitamins as well as education to the owners on how to prevent further suffering. One dog was diagnosed with TVT, a contagious cancer and will require quarantine and treatment. All in all it was a long day for our volunteers but a good one and we made the lives of these 34 dogs a little (and with some a lot!) better.
A big thank you goes out to our wonderful volunteers Tshlotlo, Eke De Vos, Jeanette Smit, sietses and their children who joined us for the day.

This morning we were called for a case of “sick dogs”, two adults and three puppies in the Willows. With no further information other than the usual “no energy, cannot stand” we drove out to find a male and female pitbull with three pups.

A case of backyard breeding where the owners may have had an accidental litter that they think can make some money with too. With no real knowledge on the breed and breeding in general a recipe for disaster if these pups end up in the wrong hands. The owners was very receptive to our help and guidance and we gave a lot of pointers on how to solve this situation, from housing to feeding and to finding responsible homes for the three pups.

Mom was very malnourished as she has not been given any additional care or nutrition while feeding her growing pups. Fed together with the male who is a big friendly giant with a huge appetite, mom was just completely drained and needs a lot of extra feeds, vitamins and medication. We have discussed all with the owner who promised to follow up and we will return on Monday to see how mom is doing and give pups their first rounds of vaccinations.

HALO does not support breeding and especially of powerbreeds in the community as we hear stories of them being used for dog fights. While we feel confident this family does not engage in this at all, the risks of pups being sent to irresponsible owners is eminent. Also, with so many unwanted litters in the communities we feel there is absolutely no need for more litters.

An update on our poor Bless who got stung by a scorpion. Due to the nationwide shortage of antivenom our wonderful team at Provet Companion Animal Hospital can only give the next best thing and keep him comfortable.

Bless is very, very sore and can now stand a little but even a touch to the skin is extremely painful still so they can’t work on leg stretches etcetera but he is drinking and eating soft food so we feel confident he is on the path to recovery.

He still needs expert care so his vet bill is still building up. If you have any way to help us pay for it, that would be a great help! You can pay directly into our account at Provet or eft to HALO
