Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach uplifts the lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit, South Africa’s wildlife haven, is surrounded by impoverished, rural communities, that have no access to government veterinary facilities for domestic animals. Since 2016, HALO (Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach) has worked together with the local community leaders to improve the mental and physical health of domestic animals. Seven communities, The Willows, LeBoeng, Moraba, The Oaks, Tswenyan

e, Mulalani, Manoutsa are visited every month by HALO volunteers who offer free veterinary care and education to owners. To be involved or donate, please contact [email protected] or call +27 82 692 3688.

☘️ This is Vicky and she is desperately looking for a loving home ☘️

Vicky has been in camp for well over three months and we thought we had a home for three times for the people cancel on us at the last minute, so unfair.

Vicky was found chained as a young pup and was surrendered for being unwanted. This absolutely gorgeous Africanis girl (around 19 kg) is a real athlete, she is super active and loves to be running and playing. She would do fantastic as a second dog entertaining lonely dogs. She really is the life of the party! Vicky is almost one year old, very healthy, sterilised and fully vaccinated.

Who is able to open their home and heart for this beautiful girl? To adopt contact HALO 064 6138441

A huge thank you goes out to Bell, Lecturer in Animal Science in England (Hadlow College/Greenwich University) and the 18 students for their visit to our outreach program.

Lorraine arranged absolute fantastic donations of collars and leads by and a generation donation of spot on products. We will be able to make use of this so well as many dogs are still on heavy chains and the tick and flea treatments will be absolute lifesavers, keeping the many dogs safe from tick bite fever.

It was a big pleasure hosting you!

💫 Masingita 💫

While at HALO we are always wary of dogs escaping our camp, this puppy made its way mysteriously INTO one our camp. When our kennel hand Rushman came in on Monday morning he was very confused to find her happily sitting in kennel 5.

We have no idea how she landed up here as all fences are perfectly closed and no holes so we think someone must have dropped her into camp. So we have appropriately named her a miracle: Masingita.

Masingita is a super friendly, social dog with beautiful brindle patches. She is an Africanis x greyhoundish pup, around 5 months old is our estimation. Obviously we have no background info but she otherwise healthy, dewormed, spot on given, sterilised this week and vaccinated and ready to go to a loving home ❤️

Less than 3 weeks until Mandela Day!

What are you planning to do for Mandela Day, 18 July? How are you spending 67 minutes to make the world a little bit better?

Why not join our Mandela Day challenge to give dogs in the Oaks a better life: by sterilising them and giving them a warm bed this winter! We are currently at 15 dogs that will have a warm bed this winter AND get a serious uplift in the quality of life with a sterilisation.

Let’s give community dogs a warm bed this winter and make a difference, together!

Just a scared little puppy….

Chained on a small rope to a tree because it’s hungry and is not getting fed enough, so it went out hunting with its brother and sister — and now the neighbours are threatening to kill them.

Mommy dog had the pups because the owner had no idea about HALO and that he could get his dog sterilised through us. Struggling to feed his own family, the dogs always suffer more.

So when HALO came by today, he immediately asked for sterilisation of his mommy dog and to surrender several pups, including the one in this picture. After honest conversations about responsible pet ownership, he made the heartbreaking — but brave — decision to surrender three of his dogs, including the mom.

It’s easy to judge and say, “Why do these people have dogs in the first place?” But the bigger question is: why is there still so much poverty that people can’t even afford to feed themselves — let alone the animals they love?

Pets bring joy, love, protection, and companionship — especially in communities where people have so little else. In many cases, animals are adopted out of love, not neglect. But without access to education, resources, and support, the cycle continues — more unwanted litters, more suffering, more fear.

This is why HALO exists. To be a lifeline. To show compassion without judgment. To offer solutions instead of shame.

Let’s fight the root cause — poverty, not the people.
Let’s raise awareness, not walls.
Let’s empower, not punish.

Support community outreach. Support free sterilisations. Support education. Support HALO.
Because no one — human or animal — deserves to be forgotten.

This little puppy was named LOVE and is looking for her forever home. Her mom and sister and many other dogs just like her are in our kennels waiting for a loving home. Open your heart and hope for a rescue, you won’t regret it!

This beautiful 8-week young girl, Mitsi, is looking for a new home. She came in very poorly with severe babesia and ehrlichia and needed a blood transfusion. She has since recovered with our loving foster and is ready for her new home where she will get the love she so deserves after her terrible start in life.

Mitsi is expected to stay a smaller than normal Africanis doggie. To adopt Mitsi contact HALO 064 6138441.

Dingo is tired of being overlooked and needs a home….

Dingo is a beautiful big brown dog, he was surrendered for killing chicken, so needs a home where there is no poultry. He is a little older than a year and an easy going dog. He would do best with other big dogs and older children as he is quite big.

Dingo is fully vaccinated and sterilised. To adopt Dingo contact HALO 0646138441.

Stunning young boy BOB needs a new home!

Bob is a 10 months old big beautiful brindle dog. He was adopted out to an orphanage but he is too strong, big and too reactive to be around many excited young, small children. He loves children but would do best with older children as Bob is a big clown and could do with some obedience training.

Bob has a golden heart and is even more stunning in real life, the pictures don’t really do him justice. He is easy going and social with other dogs.

Thanks to SAVA Community Veterinary Clinics our volunteers were able to receive their much needed pre-exposure rabies shots, keeping them safe in the line of work we do, vaccinating dogs against rabies and working closely with sick and surrendered dogs. These shots are very expensive so we are very grateful for SAVA helping our volunteers keep safe.

They all survived the ordeal (some were very nervous!), though most preferred giving vaccinations to dogs than receiving them 😜
