Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach uplifts the lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit, South Africa’s wildlife haven, is surrounded by impoverished, rural communities, that have no access to government veterinary facilities for domestic animals. Since 2016, HALO (Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach) has worked together with the local community leaders to improve the mental and physical health of domestic animals. Seven communities, The Willows, LeBoeng, Moraba, The Oaks, Tswenyan

e, Mulalani, Manoutsa are visited every month by HALO volunteers who offer free veterinary care and education to owners. To be involved or donate, please contact [email protected] or call +27 82 692 3688.

As our two ladies strong vaccination team continues vaccinating dogs in the rural communities around Hoedsprui thanks to SAVA Community Veterinary Clinics and, they come across a lot of welfare cases. Fortunately they speak the language and can engage in meaningful conversations on change.

This week they are vaccinating dogs in Turkey, between the Willows and Sekororo. An area with plenty dogs, all unvaccinated and, surprisingly, quite a few sterilised males.

Our team was puzzled how quite a few dogs here were sterilised as the nearest clinic is easily an hour’s drive away. Pretty soon they discovered a man who does it, with elastic bands and a razor blade….

The pain these dogs must have been through! We have educated the owner on the pain these dogs endured and that HALO is here to help and offer painfree sterilisations so this practice can be stopped immediately. Thankful for our offer, we hope this trait that he learned from his grandfather will not be passed on and be replaced by a phone call to us.

It’s easy to judge but education and cooperation is a more successful and effective approach to achieve lasting change and uplift the lives of the dogs in these communities.

Poor Blackie got attacked by other dogs and seriously wounded his eye and forehead. Our HALO team was driving around in the area and were stopped by the owner asking for help.

Unfortunately, sweet Blackie’s eye is beyond repair so the wonderful Debbie Coetzee at Provet Animal Hospital removed it and cleaned the very infected wound, closed it up so Blackie can now live his life as a happy pirate without pain 🙂.

This sweet boy must have been in extreme pain but he never stopped wagging his tail and asking for cuddles. What a trooper! Blackie is recovering on strong pain meds and antibiotics at our camp and once recovered will also go in for a steri.

Blackies total vet bill and care costs will come to R3,500.

Can you help us cover his costs?

HALO is busy building a small office to keep our admin and camp registrations at a central location. For this small corner we need a desk, preferably also with a few shelves to go above the desk. We were thinking a simple wooden desk shelf to hang on the wall will do the job, nothing fancy, just practical. Is anyone able to help us with materials? We have a few handy volunteers, just need materials 🤞🏻

If anyone can help us please contact HALO 064 6138441 🙏🏻

With 20 dogs in camp, 3 pups in fostercare and more on the way…. We are almost at capacity in camp and there is still more need for our help!

We can’t do this without your help. Please consider a donation, big or small to cover our running costs.

Poor Siko got surrendered for being pregnant 😢

Even when we offered to take care of it they decided they did not want her back because she was of no use to them anymore…

Siko is terribly depressed, she got her sterilisation yesterday and will need some time to recover and get her back on track. Once recovered we are hoping someone will be able to open their home and heart for this stunning big girl (she weighs 25kgs).

For now we are looking for sponsors who can temporarily pay for her care, her vet bills, medication and more!

At our outreach this weekend, a boy had written a thank you message to us on the vaccination card for his dog Bobby that we helped previously.

“I love my dog and I love Doctor for my dog. Thanks for helping dog is Bobby and my other dog is Rex. Thanks for everything.”

⭐️ This heartfelt message made our day! ⭐️

The hardest part about working with community dogs is… the people…

Yesterday was a particularly hard day for us on many different levels, and it wasn’t even the dogs that made it hard; from the dog that we could finally sterilise but was refused, to the perfectly beautiful sweet pup with an irreparable fracture that had to be put to sleep or the incredibly sad face of the pregnant female dog dumped at our camp.

It was the attitudes of their owners, that made us angry, upset and defeated….

A dog on our waiting list finally showed up to be sterilised. The new owner (he got the dog the day before!) decided no even though we have a signed contract and the dog was supposed to be sterilised Tuesday but was out. Yesterday the dog came to outreach and we meant to take it in but the aggression showed by the new owner made us not take this dog. Obviously this owner is no longer welcome at our outreaches but the only one suffering is that poor dog.

Then we were called about a puppy with a broken leg. We rushed it to Provet after hours (for which we do not have the funds but we always worry about those things later) for the X-ray to show an old and very complicated shoulder brake that is basically beyond repair. The attitude and privilege displayed by the owner who placed the investment he made for this dog above the welfare of this pup in pain was beyond us. He wanted the pup back, perfectly happy to let it live a life in agony and we couldn’t allow that. Our team gave that puppy the peaceful passing, free of pain, in loving arms.

And if that wasn’t enough for one day we got a late call from our kennel assistant that a pregnant dog was surrendered to us as they didn’t want the pups. Upsetting in itself as we have a steri program in place that should prevent this, we offered to take care of it and sterilise her and they still denied taking her back as she was “useless to them” now…

May all these owners get their fix of Karma bestowed upon them…

The cruelty and indifference we face will never harden our hearts; it only fuels our fight. We can’t change every person, but we can change the world for every dog we touch. And that’s exactly what we’ll keep doing.

✨ Sweet Toben is still looking for his forever home ✨

This little boy has come so far, now he just needs a loving home. Toben had a rough start in life and came in together with his sister, absolutely terrified of people and being touched. With lots of training, patience and love he has grown into a social and confident little boy, well behaved and potty trained. He is quite timid at first contact, but super social with other dogs and once he trusts you a loyal companion. He’s currently attending puppy school and picking things up beautifully, walking nicely on a leash and mastering new skills.

Toben will thrive in a calm, patient home with other friendly dogs, where he can keep blossoming into the amazing companion he’s destined to be. If you’re looking for a loyal, low-maintenance friend with the brightest future ahead of him, this boy is waiting to meet you.

Please reach out to HALO if you can open your heart and home on 072 634 0032 or share this message far and wide if you are not able to adopt, sharing is caring!
