Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach uplifts the lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit, South Africa’s wildlife haven, is surrounded by impoverished, rural communities, that have no access to government veterinary facilities for domestic animals. Since 2016, HALO (Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach) has worked together with the local community leaders to improve the mental and physical health of domestic animals. Seven communities, The Willows, LeBoeng, Moraba, The Oaks, Tswenyan

e, Mulalani, Manoutsa are visited every month by HALO volunteers who offer free veterinary care and education to owners. To be involved or donate, please contact [email protected] or call +27 82 692 3688.

🐶Outreach can be a tiring experience for little puppies🐶

This young owner brought his young puppies to outreach, a wise decision! Not only do we give it a free health check, we also vaccinate them against rabies, parvo and distemper and give them treatment for internal and external parasites, giving them the best possible start of a happy and healthy life in the community.

Together we can end rabies

With the HALO camp full with sick and convalescing dogs and many malnourished dogs arriving at outreaches we are eternally thankful for the ongoing support of SPAR Hoedspruit and their donation of dog food each month.
We couldn’t do it without you.

🐶 Two beautiful very sociable dogs were surrendered to HALO and need a loving home 🐶

Mufasa (young boy, less than 1 years old) is a beautiful bubbly Africanis x, he is already quite a big boy and we expect him to grow to a bigger than average Africanis. He has a stunning coat, light blonde and black, is super friendly and very playful and would likely do best with another dog friend. We are unsure about cats and other animals.

Nala is Mufasas mom and is extremely affectionate to people and a calm girl. She has a beautiful black and red/brown coat and has a very gentle character. Unfortunately, she is diagnosed with TVT for which she is currently receiving treatment. We think Nala is around 4 years old.

❤️When it’s love at first sight for the both of them…❤️

Ok, all dogs are cute and loveable but we sure have a soft spot for the Africanis dogs… they are so affectionate, resilient, intelligent, loyal and just all around amazing.

Our volunteers Milla Stone developed a real soft spot for this little cutie that she calls Brindle and it’s safe to say, the love is mutual ❤️

With the recent rains the creepy crawlers come out again and Rocky from the Willows was the unlucky doggie that got badly stung by a scorpion. He was in critical condition and our angel Debbie English from Provet Animal Hospital managed to stabilise him. And thanks to a generous donation of antivenom by the wonderful people of Hoedspruit Reptile Centre Rocky has a fighting chance.

Rocky is currently on a drip and receiving expert care at Provet. We keep our fingers crossed for this sweetheart and hope for your support in covering the vet bills which we are unable to cover ourselves at the moment…..

Any amount big or small is much appreciated!

Today we had a special visit from De Hondenhoeve, Quiebus Hondenschool en Pension Remco Vegting and Hiske Vegting who did an absolutely amazing fundraiser for dog collars and leads for community dogs.

Remco and Hiske brought two huge suitcases (!) full of beautiful collars and leads all the way from the Netherlands, Christmas came early! We are so grateful for their support and will be able to make a lot of dogs very happy with a quality collar replacing heavy chains or homemade ropes that cut into their skin.

These little ones were quite lethargic and not growing well. Most likely caused by internal parasites. We have treated the little ones with a dewormer and have given the owner more tablets to follow up in the next days.

🐶 Collars needed for dogs in Mulalani and the Oaks 🐶

We have a few big doggies that come to our outreach on a regular basis on heavy chains or tight ropes. Unfortunately we don’t have any fitting collars available to replace these with. So if you have any leftover bigger collars, please HALO could put them to good use!

You can drop them off at Provet Companion Animal Hospital for us 🙏🏻🙏🏻

!!!Exciting news!!!

🌟 And so Madala unexpectedly landed his bum in the butter with one of HALOs volunteers 🌟

This poor boy was surrendered for allegedly killing a goat. So hearing the story without seeing the dog we thought this was a hopeless case that had to be put to sleep. And then we met Madala, such a sweet and gentle soul, and we just couldn’t. We kept him in camp for several weeks to assess him and came to the conclusion that he is just the kindest, affectionate dog, slightly older and therefore not a great candidate for adoption as most people prefer puppies (silly, we know!!). And then this miracle happened!

HALO volunteer Jolene Janse van Rensburg stepped up and was touched by his gentle nature and decided to give him a home. And today he left for his new home and look at these pictures ❤️❤️❤️

Go well Madala and we wish you many happy and loved years with your new family. And thank you Jolene for saving this sweetheart’s life!

Warning: ⚠️ disturbing pictures ⚠️

Still so much education to be done….

It’s an uphill battle but we do it for the love of dogs. In areas where HALO has been present for years, we see a definite improvement in the general welfare of dogs. In the newer areas like Mulalani we see a huge increase in people hearing about us and bringing in their dogs for help. And the things we see are sometimes heartbreaking…. A lot of animal cruelty comes from ignorance.

These are just three cases we saw yesterday: one dog with terrible mange, one dog with a huge neck wound from a chain that was waayyy too tight and a litter of puppies with docked tails 😢

While our first response would be to get angry, we don’t want to drive them away from us but rather work together to improve the situation by educating and follow ups. So with help of local volunteers who speak their language we provided education and determined a way forward to improve the situation of each dog. And we will follow up to see improvement is guaranteed. Fortunately all owners were very open and grateful for our help and are now better prepared to prevent further suffering of their pet.

Unfortunately Bobby did not make it. Two days of intensive care he was looking a bit better this morning, but mid day we found out that his kidneys had given up so the kindest thing was to out him to sleep…

So sorry boy! At least your suffering has come to an end…

🍀 Giving life saving vaccinations to the dogs in Butwana today 🍀

HALOs main focus is to prevent the spread of rabies in the rural communities around Hoedspruit. With a small team we make a big change and today we made a start in Butwana, one of the more remote areas between the Willows and Mulalani that we visit monthly. It’s too far to walk for these owners to our outreach but they have heard of HALO and have reached out in the past when their dogs needed help.

Thanks to help of Global Alliance for Rabies Control and Humane Society International - Africa we could vaccinate the first 25 dogs in our door to door campaign, while also attending to two emergencies in the Willows today (one dog with a snake bite and a dog with a worm infestation).

❤️ A big thank you to our volunteers Suzaan Van Zyl and Milla Stone for working hard today and making a change to the lives of these dogs and their owners ❤️

This is Bobby from the Willows. He looks all smiles on this picture but he is currently in intensive care at Maroela Animal Hospital as he is in really bad state. Initially suspected to be a poison case, the vets now think it was a bad scorpion sting that caused him to have enormous problems breathing. He is on heavy meds and a drip and it’s still touch and go…

Can you help us pay for his vet bills? Bobby deserves a chance and he has been such a fighter. To help please pay directly into our account at Maroela Animal Hospital or

Do you love dogs, want to make a positive change in the lives of dogs and their owners in the rural communities and have some time to spend during the week or in the weekend?

HALO has an extensive vaccination program and sterilisation program in place as well as an ambulance service for dogs in need of veterinary care. With just a small team we do a lot! But we see an increase in need for our help and and could use your help!

We have a daily ambulance service that could need some extra hands, and we are always looking for help on our busy Saturday outreaches. And if you love puppies then maybe you want to help out with temporarily fostering little ones that are up for adoption or just need some TLC?
