The HALO team had another successful vaccination day at the Oaks. We started off at our camp where lots of children already awaited us. After that we spent quite a bit of time at a problem home that has 6 dogs (and a lot of livestock) in unacceptable living conditions. We have tried to work with the family for the last 3 weeis but have now reached a point where we need to involve the SPCA, to be continued. With our door to door campaign in the Oaks we are now working in a new area and it’s encouraging to see the general living conditions of the dogs here. No dogs were skinny, but a lot had ticks and fleas as is to be expected with the start of the raining season. We were able to vaccinate 31 new dogs against rabies, parvo and distemper. Two dogs were unfortunately diagnosed with TVT and we now have 10 dogs in treatment for this highly transmissible form of cancer. A big thank you goes out to our wonderful volunteers who joined today making this a big success: Milla Stone, Anna Pulane, Masete Williams, Ronnie Tshotlo and Carla. You are #HALOHeroes. #EndRabiesNow #HelpUsHelpThem #outreachprogram
Today our HALO team went out on a rabies vaccination campaign in the Oaks. As a Rabies Centre of Excellence, HALO volunteers Difference Difference and William Masete gave owners education on the importance of rabies awareness and vaccinations. We also treated all the dogs for external and internal parasites. One litter of newborn pups and their mom got a warm and dry bed and we treated one dog for severe mange. A total of 21 dogs were vaccinated and we don’t stop there: Saturday will be our second round of the rabies vaccination campaign #EndRabiesNow #outreachprogram #HelpUsHelpThem
Bobby is a typical male community dog we see on our outreaches. Not very comfortable being handled by people other than his young owner. Roaming the streets, scavenging and hunting. His young owner brought him to our outreach and Bobby was covered in hundreds of ticks and presented with Transmissible Venereal Tumours, a highly contagious form of cancer common with free roaming dogs. This week he will get his first dose of vincristine and he is happy in our camp, getting proper food and free of ticks. Soon he will be in much better shape, sterilised, healthy, cancer free and with education to the owner no longer roaming the streets of the Willows. Can you help us pay for Bobbys treatment? His cancer will likely need 7 weeks of treatment and together with his sterilisation we expect the vet bills to land at R3,000. HALO can issues tax certificates for any donation. #HelpUsHelpThem #outreachprogram #Sterilization
One important soccer match and a funeral resulted in fewer dogs than normal at our Willows Outreach but still 133 dogs were given a health check and lifesaving vaccinations thanks to Humane Society International - Africa. Today we were joined by the lovely ladies Lani Anagnostou and @Joanne Marden from our “sister” NGO ARRC Animal Relief For Rural Communities as we are working together on an exciting rabies vaccination program. It was such a pleasure to have you and thank you for your help! We are joining their outreach soon so we can share and learn even more❤️. A big thank you also goes to our lovely volunteers Suzaan Van Zyl, Jolene and friend, Bella, Ronnie, William, Anna Pulane, Theko and Tumisho for running a smooth outreach despite some very naughty kids! We had to admit 6 dogs, 5 of whom were diagnosed with TVT and one dog had several severe wounds that need treatment. #welovedogs #outreachprogram #Endrabiesnow
HALO is busy uplifting lives of the dogs in the rural communities. We had another busy week of sterilisations and were able to spay 7 dogs of owners who pleaded for it. All dogs were signed up last week at outreach and immediately got sorted, putting a stop to unwanted litters and spread of diseases like TVT. Can you please help us with settling the vet bills for Jenny, Jack, Taylor, Professor (we LOVE the creativity of naming dogs!), Tyson and 2x no name? One steri male is R750 and a female R950, but any small amount is welcome and goes a long way! This little boy came a long way…. As young as he was he hadn’t known any love from people so when HALO did a door to door and met with this pup all alarm bells went off when we saw him being mishandled and biting everyone he saw. This was a disaster waiting to happen so we took him away and brought him to our miracle foster lady Colleen Fraser. Little Jack took a good time to heal internally and externally and now is the most precious boy and all ready to be loved by his forever family. He is less than 3 months old, a beautiful healthy Africanis boy with a stunning blonde colour and captivating eyes. He is confident and social with all dogs, used to small children and just generally a lovely little chap. Please help HALO find Jack a home he deserves. If you are unable to give him a home please share this message far and wide, every little bit helps! To adopt contact HALO 064 6138441 or [email protected]
HALO keeps track of all vaccinations given to dogs on our outreach, owners receive a vaccination card that also holds information on previous medical issues. All data after outreach is then entered into our database to keep track of all dogs seen and generate statistics. We see an increase in general bodyscore over the years and a general decrease in ticks and fleas load: a testament that our efforts help uplift the lives of dogs. With over 2,500 vaccinations given a year, we work hard on keeping the dogs and their owners in the rural communities safe and healthy. We can’t do this without donations from generous people! We don’t have enough funds to make it to the end of the year and really can use your support. Will you be able to help us keep us going? We know.... It's a long shot.... but we want to give this sweetheart a chance of life....
We received a call from an owner who wanted to surrender his dog as it was allegedly involved in the killing of a goat... That in itself is a death sentence so we were ready to put this dog to sleep immediately. Only to see this beautiful, gentle sweetheart of a dog... and we just couldn't! 💔
OK, we don't know the whole story but don't want to risk it so this dog cannot be placed back into the community with goats and other livestock. He is also not super friendly with other dogs so would be best as a single dog...
And yes, he is just a plain brown dog but his personality has captured ALL our hearts. He is a gentle older man and he loves, loves, LOVES affection. He has the gentlest beautiful brown eyes...
Is anyone able to home this dog? We have a week!

Two beautiful girls were surrendered to us for being unwanted. We have had them in our camp for 2 weeks and have been sterilised and vaccinated and are now ready for their loving forever home. Both girls are around 1-2 years old and are very loving, good with other dogs and love people and affection. We s anyone able to give (one of them) a loving home they deserve? #adoptdontshop #outreachprogram #togetherwecanmakeadifference #cutedogs
HALO had another warm and busy door-to-door vaccination outreach at the Oaks. 34 Unvaccinated dogs received lifesaving rabies, parvo and distemper vaccinations and got a health check. Owners were educated on animal kindness. A big thank you goes out to Milla Stone, Cécile Morlus, Claudia Schnell, Eke De Vos and friend, Lex, William Maruping, Jeanette Smit and Dirk for making this day a big success. We had to admit three dogs, one with a nasty head wound and two pups in poor condition. One is currently getting the best care at our amazing foster mom Colleen Fraser, we still need a fosterhome for the second pup. We signed up two dogs for sterilisation next week. #EndRabiesNow #togetherwecanmakeadifference #outreachprogram #endrabiestogether #communitiesagainstrabies
It was a little quieter than normal but it’s always a hectic busy affair with the many children visiting our Willows Outreach. Thank you to our loyal volunteers for joining us today and making this a success, with help of the wonderful team of CARE: Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education and new volunteers Jeanette and Dirk Smit. The tick and flea load is definitely on the increase with the higher temperatures we are experiencing and several dogs were in quite poor condition. We had to take in three dogs, one with a broken leg, one anemic puppy and an elderly dog that was in very poor shape and also had an eye problem (we had already removed the other eye previously). Thank you Humane Society International - Africa for helping us give lifesaving vaccinations to the dogs. We have signed up another 10 dogs for urgent sterilisation. So if you are able to help us pay for a sterilisation, we can get these 10 an instantly better life and less puppies in this area! #togetherwecanmakeadifference #outreachprogram #hoedspruit #endrabiesnow
