But what about THAT article about horses forward planning?
I have had a ton of tags and direct messages about THAT Guardian article.
The intimation is that the study disproves our current belief that horses can't be naughty or disrespectful.
Firstly, this is a fantastic example of the need to read the study (I will post link in comments) , not just someone's interpretation.
Once you read the study some things become clear.
Firstly, this is behavior shaping. This study is not assessing a horses ability to plan in advance without behavior shaping.
Secondly, in the methodology 12 repetitions were performed over a 5 minute period. This means the study proves a horse can plan around 25 seconds in advance.
They STILL aren't plotting your demise and spook points overnight.
Horses STILL only do one of two things :
What they think is the right thing ( learned behavior), or what they think they need to do to survive ( reactions).
I think some people think I am questioning the intelligence of a horse when I mention this stuff Quite the opposite actually. I believe "in the moment" intelligence is a more advanced state of being. Look where forward planning gets us. A constant state of anxiety.
I don't even like the terminology sometimes used, which is that horses lack "higher function". They certainly can plan a few tasks ahead, over a few minutes.
I would still argue that horses are smarter than humans, they just think in a different way to us. This means they don't have man made concepts like naughtiness, deceit or respect.
There is another level to this. Some people are sharing this article in celebration of a horses intelligence. I love this. Some are sharing it to justify the need for harsh "discipline". I don't love this. The advances in Horsemanship since we have stopped trying to punish "disrespect" have been far reaching, with safe, happy and relaxed horses, as opposed to obedient time bombs.
Discipline without understanding is always abuse.
