The uMngeni SPCA has been tackling the problems of neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals in the greater Howick Districts since its formation in 1968. Our area of jurisdiction falls within the uMngeni Municipal boundries (with the exception of Otto's Bluff which comes under the Pietermaritzburg SPCA and Nottingham Road which falls under Mooi River SPCA. Our area therefore includes Howick, Hilton, Cedara, Mpophomeni, Haza, Impendle, Dargle, Lidgetton, Balgowan, Karkloof and everything in between.

uMngeni SPCA is excited to announce the finalists of this year's 🐾"Precious Pet" 🐾Photo Competition 📷!!!

We asked locals to prove who had the most adorable pet in uMngeni and the results are in.

The winners of the Darling Dog 🐕 category are these two beautiful beagles, loving owned by Cassie and Erin Fleischack

AND the accolade for the Cutest Cat 🐈 goes to Peaches, Allison Hattingh's gorgeous ginger.

During October, we prioritised education and outreach. 💙🐾📚

By kind arrangement with Belinda Charlton, Trainee Inspector Menzi Mchunu and Clinic Assistant Percival Memela visited Dargle Primary School. They distributed activity books promoting animal care and educated the children about the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare:
ℹ️Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
ℹ️Freedom from Discomfort
ℹ️Freedom from Pain, Injury, and Disease
ℹ️Freedom to Express Normal Behavior
ℹ️Freedom from Fear and Distress

We encouraged the children to report any instances of animal cruelty to their parents or a responsible adult, who can then contact the SPCA.

At the uMngeni Municipality's Mayoral Khulumanathi / Talk to Us event, Inspector Kevin Khumalo and Trainee Field Officer Njabulo Hlongwane engaged with emerging farmers. They discussed proper animal care, relevant legislation, and good animal husbandry practices.

As the SPCA believes in education over prosecution, we urged farmers to contact us for assistance to prevent animal welfare issues. We emphasised that good animal husbandry leads to healthier and happier animals.

The uMngeni SPCA is relieved that Guy Fawkes isn't celebrated in South Africa. However, we want to remind everyone that fireworks can be incredibly distressing for pets and wildlife.

Instead of buying fireworks, please consider donating a few cans of pet food to your local SPCA.

Let's choose kindness to help animals in need.

Since October, when passengers book a transfer with Sisonke, we receive R25.00 from Sisonke Transfer Sevices, and when the passengers match the donation by adding another R25.00 to their transfer fee for our benefit, uMngeni SPCA will get R50.00!

It's a loud NO to fireworks❌

As we approach the festive season of Diwali, Guy Fawkes, Christmas, and New Year celebrations, we urge our community to consider celebrating without fireworks.

While fireworks may provide momentary excitement for some, they cause hours of fear and suffering to countless animals. Pets and wildlife are not the only ones impacted, people with sensory sensitivities can be deeply affected by the noise and bright light.

Let's celebrate joyfully and responsibly with alternatives. Fireworks cause suffering and we urge you and your family to refrain from them.

For all concerned pet owners who'd like to be prepared, you can purchase Anxitane S calming medication for cats and dogs from uMngeni SPCA at 15 Campbell Road.

A "deal" appeal from uMngeni SPCA🚗
Can you help us find wheels we can afford? Our exceptionally hardworking Kennel and Clinic Manager Kevin, also doubles up as our uMngeni SPCA Inspector, (until we can find one).

So, he's always on the go. But we don't always have an available vehicle or a suitable one. Our bakkies are specifically kitted and rigged for animal rescue and outreach missions.

We’re looking for a used but reliable, compact vehicle that’s economical to run, at a reasonable price.

"As it is the first anniversary since we adopted Max (formally now known as Maximilian ‘Pawsome’ Aubrey Bucknall) I just wanted to share some pictures of his celebratory lunches at Coffeeberry Cafe which has become his favourite café and to which he is a regular visitor. Max is a very special member of our family and we love him dearly. He is such a gentle, sweet little soul and has fitted in so well with the geese, ducks and chickens. CAUTION: UPSETTING CONTENT On 15/2/23, the Coastal Horse Care Unit WhatsApped our emergency number with footage of a horse in distress. The contact number of the owner, Sethu Maharaj, was given. Jabulani Mshengu contacted Sethu and explained that the SPCA Vet could not come out to examine the horse, but he had seen the footage of the horse. He informed Sethu that he needed to contact private vets. Sethu told Jabulani that he could not afford the cost of a private vet. Jabulani informed Sethu that he would go out and see the horse - if the animal was suffering, the SPCA would make the decision. Jabulani asked Sethu to meet him where the horse was kept in Deepdale. Sethu said he could not meet in Deepdale since he was working and living in PMB. He told Kabulani that his uncle, Mondli Maharaj, was at home, and furnished Jabulani with his uncle's number. Mondli informed Jabulani that the horse had been suffering from this problem after it gave birth. Its foal is five months old. Mondli told Jabulani that when the horse walks 100 metres, it struggles to breathe. The Coastal Horse Care Vet, viewed the footage and felt the horse should be euthanased to end its suffering. She sent the footage to another vet with equine experience, and he agreed with her view. She also sent the footage to an equine specialist, who agreed that the horse should be euthanased. Our vets, Dr Stephen Hodgson and Dr Michael Thompson, also felt the horse should be euthanased. The five vets who viewed the footage were all in agreement. Mondli agreed that the SPCA should make the decision regarding euthanising the horse. Sethu and his father, Lee Makhathini, later came to the SPCA. Mr Makhathini was extremely aggressive and made it clear that he was not threatening Jabulani but would kill him for killing his horse. We pointed out to them that in terms of the Animals Protection Act, Mondli was the owner of the horse; “owner” in relation to an animal, includes any person having the possessio

What a change from the shy boy who first came to us! According to his new mom, Carol Cox, "Harley is soooo happy and immediately made friends with our other dog. He is a beautiful gentle boy and is fitting in so perfectly with our family. Thank you for all you do ❤." Thank you for choosing Harley. 💙

Our job isn't an easy one, but one of the things that brings us such joy is to see how our adopted animals are enjoying their new homes, new families, and new friends. 🙋 Who's ready to have their day made? Charlie, now called Duke, has been adopted by Lulu Davel, and we could not have asked for a better home for him! Duke is one of the boerboels we rescued earlier this year, and we are just so grateful that we were able to rescue him to live a life filled with love and joy.

Sweet little boy Bellamy has been adopted by the Scott- Shaw family. He fitted in immediately, and we could not have asked for a better home for him. 💙
