We pride ourselves on being a very proactive & highly motivated branch of the SPCA.

The uMngeni SPCA has been tackling the problems of neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals in the greater Howick Districts since its formation in 1968. Our area of jurisdiction falls within the uMngeni Municipal boundries (with the exception of Otto's Bluff which comes under the Pietermaritzburg SPCA and Nottingham Road which falls under Mooi River SPCA. Our area therefore includes Howick, Hilton, Cedara, Mpophomeni, Haza, Impendle, Dargle, Lidgetton, Balgowan, Karkloof and everything in between.

A heartfelt thank you to a concerned hiker who reported a dog in need of better care in Mbutshane, Sweetwaters.

After overcoming location and access challenges, our inspector found three dogs chained without water or adequate shelter. We made contact with the owner and provided counselling.

We are so pleased to report that the owner immediately acknowledged the issue and made the necessary changes:
✅Dogs are now unchained in a securely fenced property. ✅Fresh water and suitable bedding provided. ✅Shelter moved to an undercover area.

We will conduct a follow-up visit to ensure this positive change is maintained. This success is a testament to the power of community vigilance!🐶🐶🐶

Customer Feedback 🐾💙🐰
Everyone is welcome to visit our SPCA Vet! Thank you to Shubnum Ismail for her letter which acknowledges appreciation for care and professional services as well as emotional support from our Vet facility.

On rescuing a lost grey angora bunny, Shubnum soon realised it's injured leg needed specialist attention. Sadly the leg could not be saved, but the bunny is well and receiving loads of love and care.

A Win for Animal Welfare 💙🐾
The National SPCA’s Wildlife unit invited our local uMngeni SPCA team to join up on a round of local wildlife facility inspections. The team arrived at a Reptile Park but the owner was not available to facilitate access. Inspector Luyanda Renge arranged to return the following day. In addition to reptiles, the facility keeps farm and wildlife animals. He discovered that several donkey’s hooves were in a bad state and cows’ hooves were overgrown. Inspector Renge issued a warning to the owner.

Within twenty-four hours a farrier was called on site to trim, cut, clean and treat the affected animals. Monthly follow up visits are planned but Renge stated, “Although these animal’s hooves should not have been neglected, it is gratifying when the offending owner swiftly responds to rectify the situation in the correct manner.”
