We pride ourselves on being a very proactive & highly motivated branch of the SPCA.

The uMngeni SPCA has been tackling the problems of neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals in the greater Howick Districts since its formation in 1968. Our area of jurisdiction falls within the uMngeni Municipal boundries (with the exception of Otto's Bluff which comes under the Pietermaritzburg SPCA and Nottingham Road which falls under Mooi River SPCA. Our area therefore includes Howick, Hilton, Cedara, Mpophomeni, Haza, Impendle, Dargle, Lidgetton, Balgowan, Karkloof and everything in between.

Vet Graduation Ceremony Address
Today uMngeni SPCA’s Operations Manager Kevin Khumalo spoke at the graduation ceremony for veterinary students who graduated in 2024, held at the Cedara College of Agriculture.

In his presentation, Kevin scoped out the incredibly large geographical area for which this society is responsible, and the sheer scale of the work in tracking and addressing the problems of neglect, abuse and cruelty in our districts.

Near and far, many community members cannot afford to pay for treatment. The society is in dire need of Veterinary resources to action outreach programmes which spay, neuter, treat and medicate farm and domestic animals, while simultaneously educating owners and caretakers in a range of correct and kind practices.

Veterinary graduates are required to complete one year’s community service for which the government pays. Needless to say, these available graduates are courted far and wide by SPCA’s and other needy organisations, to choose their organisation!

uMngeni SPCA dearly hopes that Kevin’s presentation will motivate one young veterinarian to elect us as their home base where they complete their internship!

Earth Moving Appeal

Help Us To Level A Bank and Keep Animals Safe

The uMngeni SPCA needs your help to improve the safety of our animal residents.

Our current fence at the kennels has holes, creating a risk of animals escaping. To address this issue, we need to level a 24 metre bank before installing new, secure fencing.

The good news is that Chris from Fenceworks has generously offered to install the new fence once the leveling is complete, and a previous donation from Vista Mesh Fencing means we have the fencing on hand ready to install.

Update on Monkey Case

Our Operations Manager, Kevin Khumalo caught up with Warrant Officer Du Plessis who is investigating the ongoing Monkey case. The latest update reveals that our police have deployed a number of methods to track down the suspect, who is reported to reside in Lidgetton. So far, none have yielded results and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Sources suggest that he may have fled the country or have taken a break over the festive season and that he could possibly return soon looking for employment opportunities which open again during January.

The suspect is wanted for questioning in connection with a case opened in August 2024. uMngeni SPCA responded to an emergency call for assistance from the Caversham area, where two monkeys had broken into a chicken coop. Instead of just being chased away they were brutally attacked by a man wielding a spade.

According to the complainant who witnessed the barbaric behaviour, the perpetrator showed no remorse for his conduct. Instead he dragged the severely injured animals around proudly displaying them “like they were his trophies “.

Although the good Samaritan loaded the monkeys into her vehicle to deliver to the uMngeni Veterinary Clinic, one sadly died in transit. The other was so severely injured that the vet had no choice but to euthanise the primate.

The SPCA advocates for the humane treatment of all animals at every stage of their lives, and believes that every living creature has intrinsic value and is a sentient being. Our primary and motivating concern, is the prevention of cruelty to all living creatures and the promotion of the humane treatment of animals through leadership, education, and law enforcement.
