Message from the Chairperson, Monika Holst ๐พ๐
Itโs impossible to adequately thank the uMngeni community for going above and beyond throughout 2025. You continually helped help us strive towards achieving our vision, that all animals in our area would be free from cruelty and suffering.
Our core work of retrieving, housing, caretaking and medically treating stray, abandoned and surrendered animals is costly. Added to that, is the ongoing outreach work of regularly inspecting domestic, commercial, sporting and farm environments involving animals.
Our business model is simple; the running costs must be covered by donations of goods to sell, finance, supplies, materials and services from our community, and income generated by our retail outlets and the Veterinary Clinic.
With your support, our Management Committee, General Manager and each staff member worked with purpose.
One ambitious project was the preparation of a new theatre, and rooms to house our x-ray and dental machines. They are up and running, and we are elated to offer our community a fully functional Veterinary Clinic for all our local residents; all are welcome and fees are charged on a sliding scale. Under the dedicated and superbly skilled leadership of Dr. Margie Roach, the clinic has begun to contribute sustainable income towards the kennel and community outreach running costs.
A major financial challenge was replacing the rotten kennel building roof. You came through and matched the R265,000 we needed for our โRoof Raising Fundโ drive.
After closely scrutinising the retail structure, we took a brave step and closed the Greendale shop, amalgamating its offering with the uMngeni SPCA Centre. That left two other functioning Bring & Buy shops, in Howickโs CBD and in Hilton respectively. The staff were restructured and the risk paid off; retail is now largely achieving its income targets.
Our General Manager Kevin Khumalo has been instrumental in our achievements. He has also engendered a positive and team-orientated spirit amongst the 31 staff, who often do emotionally and physically demanding work.
We are deeply grateful to every individual and group entity, who supported us in 2025. We wish everyone a blessed season of rest, recuperation and safe travels.
Because of you, we will continue to do what we do, in 2026.๐พ๐
