Hoof care

There is an old saying 'no Hoof no horse '

Hoof care goes hand in hand with good feed. Bad feeding causes feet problems such as dry brittle hooves or too mich rich food may cause Laminitis.
Smith_Animal_Feeds have taken care to ensure their feed is well balanced for horses and ponies.
Our farrier Wayne Dick has been with us for almost 20 years now. Regular visits are important. Every 4 to 6 weeks! Who wouldn't want a pedicure that often!

Smith_Animal_Feeds should be so proud of these super ponies and their results at Sanesa KZN Q4 at Canterbury this weekend.
Caleb and Silkwood Hoity Toity placed 1st and 2nd in their dressage. 1st in Equitation. 1st in performance riding. 2nd and 3rd in 40cm show jumping.
Reese and Patches of Blue competed in the training section to win her lead rein dressage and win her working riding pony.
Maddy took Erica SA Boerperd Erica's Kasspass (Lollipop) to his first ever big show. He caused around as if he owned the the place with is laid back personality. He went clear the first round of jumping and had one pole the next round. Loads of complements all round.
Couldn't be more proud!!!

8 steps to caring for your old horse with Smith_Animal_Feeds
1. Feed for need. You do not want an underweight ribby old bones horse, but too much weight is also not good good for them. Overweight could lead to laminitis.
2. Keep them moving. Big paddocks and hand walking keeps the joints loose helping stiffness and arthritis.
3. Life is better outside. The more they are outside in the sun (vitamin D) moving around with a friend the healthier their mind and sole wil be.
4. Dentist! Make sure the dentist checks every 6 months. Old horses tend to have few teeth that need taking care of. If they are struggling to keep the food in their mouth while eating (quidding) try a nosebag for feeding.
5. Vaccinate. Do not skip on vaccines!
6. Routine routine routine! All horses thrive on routine
7. Keep them warm when it's cold and cool.when it's hot.
8. Pay attention and know your horse. Look out for signs of cancer, Cushings or Glaucoma.

Very proud of the girls and horses!

Our junior challenge team proved to be exactly that, A CHAllENGE!!! With a horse having to scratch and team members having to double up on classes and ride in classes that where out of their comfort zone!

Smith_Animal_Feeds !! Could not be more proud of your spectacular feed. From eventing Thursday and Friday to showing on Sunday at the South Africa Youth Champs. Maddie and Kings Council did KZN extremely proud. 65cm eventing team placed 1st! The challenge junior showing team placed 3rd. KC won his show hack and placed 3rd in the working hunter.

5. minerals (major minerals and trace elements)
6. vitamins
We have chosen Smith Animal Feed for over a decade. Smiths horse Feed provides our horses with all their nutritional needs. The feed has been made with the help of an equine vet along with Mr Smith to ensure the horses have exactly what they need in each portion. The horses eat their hard food (pellets) twice a day in summer and three times a day in winter. We Feed according to weight, temperament, breed and work load.
The horses go out to graze though out the day and have plenty of hay to eat through out the day and night. They also get their fair share of treats too... (carrots and apples) Smith_Animal_Feeds
