Kwa-Zulu Natal Poultry Institute (KZNPI) have subsidized courses on offer. Their funder requires applicants to be existing small scale Poultry farmers who are also below the age of 45 years old.

SUBSIDY APPLICATION FOR HATCHERY MANAGEMENT COURSE
10 to 14 June 2024

If approved the applicant will only pay R900. The funder will pay the balance.

Approved delegates will also be issued with a travel sub. The amount varies- for example Kzn is R660 and Gauteng is R880.

And if the delegate completes both feedback forms on time, they will be reimbursed R450.

6 ways to avoid importing disease into your flock.

1. Buy from a reliable person whose birds exhibit good practices of hygiene and health.

2.Keep age groups separated for as long as practicable, so young birds are kept away from adults while they gain some immunity.

3. Do not introduce birds from a different source to your flock without them spending at least two weeks in isolation first.

4. Make sure feeding and drinking equipment is kept clean and free from mould and algae.

5. Try not to visit everyone else's chickens and then come back to your own wearing the same footwear and clothes - diseases are spread easily this way. Commercial poultry reps will change clothes, have showers and carry disinfectant with them to avoid the possibility of contaminating clients' birds..

6.Try to keep wild birds, especially sparrows and starlings, from getting into the poultry feed. Set rat/stoat/ferret traps, and use bait stations around the boundaries of your shed or chicken run.
