Meet the Micro Rex: South Africa's Tiny Treasure! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ‡

Did you know South Africa is home to a unique rabbit breed in development? The Micro Rex is a pint-sized wonder, growing to the same petite size as a Netherland Dwarf. These little bunnies boast the super-soft, plush coat of a Rex rabbit, making them irresistible to cuddle. 😍

Bred for their friendly personalities and compact size, Micro Rex rabbits are currently only available in South Africa, with a handful of dedicated, accredited breeders carefully developing the breed. While not yet officially ratified, these charming rabbits are gaining popularity for their sweet nature and unique appearance.

If you're looking for a small, affectionate companion with a luxurious coat, keep an eye on the Micro Rex! They're a true South African gem. ✨

Keeping Your Rabbit Cool During a Heatwave

With temperatures soaring above 40Β°C today in KwaZulu-Natal, it's crucial to take extra precautions to keep your rabbits cool and safe. Rabbits are particularly sensitive to heat stress, and even seemingly mild temperatures can be dangerous for them. Here are some essential tips:

1. Provide Ample Shade:
Move the Hutch: If possible, relocate your rabbit's hutch to a shaded area, such as under a tree or a covered patio.
Create Shade: If moving the hutch isn't feasible, construct a shade cover using a tarp, sheet, or umbrella. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent heat buildup.

2. Offer Cooling Options:
Frozen Water Bottles: Place frozen water bottles wrapped in towels in the hutch or run.
Ceramic Tiles or Cool Mats: Provide cool surfaces for your rabbits to lie on.
Misting: Lightly mist your rabbit's fur with cool water using a spray bottle. Avoid getting their head or ears wet.

3. Ensure Constant Access to Water:
Multiple Water Sources: Provide both water bottles and bowls, ensuring fresh water is always available.
Ice Cubes: Add ice cubes to water bowls to keep the water cool.
Frozen Treats: Offer frozen vegetable treats as a refreshing snack.

4. Monitor Your Rabbit Closely:
Signs of Heat Stress: Watch for signs of heat stress, such as excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, or seizures.
Seek Veterinary Attention: If you notice any signs of heat stress, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Additional Tips:
Limit Exercise: Avoid excessive exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
Indoor Option: If possible, bring your rabbit indoors to a cool, well-ventilated room.
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Never leave your rabbit in direct sunlight, even for short periods.

By following these tips, you can help your rabbits stay cool and comfortable during this heatwave. Remember, prevention is key. Take proactive steps to ensure your furry friends' safety and well-being.

You may have noticed we've been a bit quieter than usual lately, and I wanted to share a little bit about why.

November and December have thrown us some curveballs:

A bout of COVID at the end of November left me feeling under the weather for a while.

Our hearts are still heavy after our beloved puppy Gunner was diagnosed with Hepatozoonosis and sadly passed away.

And to top it off, we experienced a brutal heatwave here in KZN with temperatures soaring to 37Β°C.

These unexpected events, combined with the usual post-Black Friday order rush, have unfortunately caused some delays in getting orders out.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Your patience means the world to us.

Important Note: To ensure your orders arrive before Christmas, please place them by December 16th.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support.

With love and gratitude,

The That Bunny Farm Team

Our Story

Our love for rabbits started way back in 1994 and has been a passion ever since.

We are very active and vocal about rabbit care and although we are breeders, we are exceptionally particular about who we home our rabbits to. All new bunny owners are welcomed into our extended bunny family and we love to stay in contact.

Our little business has grown from strength to strength, with this year (2018) seeing the launch of our online shop. We realised that there was very little in the way of bunny toys and accessories here in South Africa, the vast majority being imported. Majority of our products are made by ourselves in our little workshop and all products go through stringent quality control with our own buns prior to being released to the public. Trade enquiries are welcome for all of our products.

We attend rabbit shows both in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng, being members of both clubs. Our rabbits always do exceptionally well, which is a huge driving force for us as we continually strive to improve our breeds and to work on breeds that are in decline.
