This so clearly illustrates how dogs (or any rescue animal) can change. Tails and Whiskers Charity Shop has a post on what shelter dogs go through - this is what they were talking about. Same dog - Nikita.

And it's been a whole SEVEN weeks since Nikita came to us, barely able to walk. In this time she's realised that she doesn't have to fight for food anymore, that other dogs want to be her friend, that she can rely on a warm bed at night and soft cushions during the day, and sees a car ride as something fun to do. Her tail and ears are covered in hair as well. She still doesn't trust strangers and you have to let her decide when she wants to be your friend, but once that happens, you have a snuggle buddy of note!

Ginger is here for assessment prior to being networked by The Africanis Assistance network NPC and Animal Protection Network - Alberton. She went on her first social outing yesterday to Urban Grind Roasters and was phenomenal! I think she'll make a great shop dog (as seen from the photos 🤣) Thanks once again Michelle Port and Raffy for the support!

If anybody is interested in this girl, she is sterilised, vaccinated and chipped. Great with other dogs both big and small (settled within a day in the day care chaos), and is the ultimate cuddle bunny (she identifies as a lap dog 😄). Please contact either one of the above organisations to arrange adoption.

Nikkita update: She went for her steri last week, had all her vaccs and got chipped - she's ready to be networked! She improves every day mentally and emotionally, but has lost a bit of weight due to missing a few meals last week with her steri and me going away over the weekend. We'll do a weigh-in report again next week.

Nikita progress: She is developing so nicely, both physically and mentally. She should be able to eat with the other dogs by this weekend as her food aggression is almost gone. Weight gain is on track to get her sterilised and vaccinated in another week or so. Vets are super happy with her progress!

Nikita went for another weigh-in but it looks like she's hit a plateau with her gaining weight. I'll change a few things because she needs to cover those ribs and get a decent body.

She also went for her first social engagement with Whiskey and Raff (thanks Michelle Port for lending him to us to help Nikita!) at Urban Grind Roasters. She did so well - Animal Protection Network - Alberton and The Africanis Assistance network NPC - how is this progress? She still has some ways to go but I'm so proud of her!

UPDATE: Frank has a home! Thank you so much for networking and your interest in his welfare.

One of our clients needs to rehome their older miniature French poodle. His name is Frank, is 12 years old, and lives with three cats. He's healthy, sterilised, and vaccinated.

If anybody can take him in or knows of somebody who can take in an elderly gentleman, please get hold of Jodi on 083 777 8948.

Nikita isn't only improving physically, but mentally as well. She's learning so many things - living in a household, sharing treats, not snatching at hands; things that we take for granted with dogs who grew up as they should.

UPDATE ON FRANKIE
I took Frankie for his monthly checkup this morning and the vet is happy with his right hip situation and said that he could be operated on as soon as next week, BUT that it all now hinges (pun?) on his left cruciate, which is still strained due to him compensating for his hip.

So, we are back to strict exercise management to give that cruciate time to get stronger for when he does have that op. Thanks Michelle Port for the coffee this morning and Nina Veganley for your ongoing support.

His tummy seems to have stabilised since he's been on raw food and a switch to Heritage View puppy food. Slowly moving him over back to kibble and he's picked up another 200g since Monday! Quickly catching up to Jasmine now.

Last picture of the three girls together. Tess (the white puppy) has been adopted and Blue (the panda-looking puppy) is going to be a friend in another foster home to a lonely puppy, and Jasmine is staying until she's adopted. Fare thee well, girls! Be happy and spread your love wherever you go. Going to miss you but I know Nina Veganley finds the best homes ever!

Update on young Frankie!

Yesterday all the pups got their 2nd vaccs with Dr Michelle (Paws In Motion) in Alberton (she is the wonderful vet who has been supporting Nina Veganley (The Africanis Assistance Network NPC) with vital medical assistance for all the rescues). She checked Frankie's left leg and it turns out he has put too much strain on his cruciate (poor boy!). He is now on total rest for a week to give it time to heal and not do more damage.

He went for a checkup this morning with the equally wonderful Dr Rigby at ://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057369946086 who gave him a thumbs up for progressing well with the hip and confirming the cruciate status.

With all the meds, Frankie's tummy has not been happy, so he's on chicken and pumpkin for the next week while he's on the pain meds.

His sisters are confused because they can't play with him and he's not happy because he can't be a puppy. The few weeks of carrying him around and limiting his exercise is well worth it to ensure he has a normal life of many years!

What is that saying about the best laid plans? Well, that is exactly what happened to my plans to take the pups to Tails and Whiskers Charity Shop on Saturday. During the day on Friday I noticed that Frankie was limping and didn't want to put weight on his right hind leg. Took him to the vet and after x-rays it showed that the femur head wasn't seated in the socket (pardon my medical terms ) and they had to sedate him to try and pop it back in. I got a phone call later to say that there is no socket for the ball to seat and they were keeping him overnight. Hard discussions followed with Veganley which resulted in a very bad night for both of us.

The next morning the head vet at St Francis Vet in Edenvale phoned Nina to explain the problem with the decision being not as dire as we anticipated, but that we now have to keep Frankie quiet and do reassessments every week until he can have the inevitable surgery.

The condition is called coxofemoral luxation and is seen in rural rescue dogs that had poor to non-existent nutrition from as early as being in the womb. We are now taking it one day at a time to see how long we can postpone the surgery so that his little body has time to grow properly and hopefully minimise the later trauma.

In closing I want to apologise to anybody who went to the shop to view the pups but I hope you had some lovely cake and tea and spent some money there.

I'll keep posting updates and the possibility of bringing the puppies to the shop as planned. Thank you to Tails and Whiskers Charity Shop for the loan of the pen, the Yudelowitz family for the donation of the crate, and Port (and Raffy) for her support and delivering our fix of Pat's carrot cake and the pen.

All four puppies will be at Tails and Whiskers Charity Shop tomorrow 9 September! Only one (the only boy) has been adopted and one reserved so why not come get some puppy cuddles and decide which one you want to make part of your life while you enjoy some of the best cake and tea in Jozi? Oh, and do some shopping while you're there! The Africanis Assistance Network NPC
