Our LEMON TREES really SHOWED OFF this season (with some help from our beautiful compost of course) 🥰 The problem is that no one wants to buy lemons as everyone has lemons at this time of year… So… we’ve donated some to the members of the Whole Earth Recycling community project, and we’ve juiced some… 🍋🌍🌱

Siya from ORASA (the Organics Recycling Association of South Africa) came to do a SITE INSPECTION AT OUR FARM today to make sure that we CONFORM TO the ORASA STANDARDS. The GOOD NEWS is that WE PASSED! ✅🪱🌍🌱
DAY 365 of STARTING A FARM… WE MADE IT through OUR FIRST YEAR, and what a journey it has been! 🥳 It might be the END of our FIRST YEAR but it’s only just the BEGINNING of SOMETHING MAGICAL! ✨ We had a very busy and productive day and were HONOURED to have an OLD FRIEND and a SUCCESSFUL FARMER from KZN pop in for a VISIT. REFLECTING back on this PAST YEAR, we’ve had our ups and downs (thankfully mostly ups) but most importantly WE’VE LEARNED a lot, GROWN tremendously, and we feel a HUGE SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT as we STARTED FROM SCRATCH and have REACHED OUR main GOAL of officially being READY FOR OUR FIRST COMPOST SEASON! 😍🪱🛻🌍🌱
This will be my LAST “DAILY” POST but we will continue to share our journey with you so please continue to WATCH THIS SPACE! 👀🥰
Unfortunately, one of our valued team members lost a close family member yesterday so we did not celebrate our First Birthday today. Our condolences go out to him and his family 😢💔
DAY 364 of STARTING A FARM… Our COMPOST, LAWN DRESSING & TOPSOIL DELIVERIES are finally in FULL SWING with at least one delivery a day! LET THE COMPOST SEASON BEGIN! 😍🪱🛻🌍🌱
DAY 363 of STARTING A FARM… We spent a LOVELY AFTERNOON walking around our FARM with all of OUR KIDS (including our fur babies). They all LOVE CLIMBING ONTO the COMPOST WINDROWS! 😍🐶🪱🌍🌱
DAY 360 of STARTING A FARM… This COMPOST WINDROW is LOOKING AMAZING! We are hoping that after a few turns it WILL BE READY in a few weeks time! 🪱🌍🌱
DAY 358 of STARTING A FARM… As we APPROACH the ONE YEAR mark, we decided to FINALLY get STARTED with our VEGGIE GARDEN - rather late than never! 🥬🍑🥦🍆🌶️🫑🌽🫛🥕🍈🥒🍅 STEP 1 was to prune the hedge surrounding our veggie garden and STEP 2 was to remove all of the weeds and to prepare the soil for to receive some of our delicious compost! ASHAMEDLY, the ONLY fruit/veggie PLANTS currently GROWING in our veggie patch IS A PEACH tree and a giant GRANADILLA! I guess we all have to start somewhere… 🌍🌱

DAY 355 of STARTING A FARM… Today our team HARVESTED our FIRST big BATCH OF VERMICAST! 😍🪱💩 WHAT IS Vermicast you ask?! Well, simply put, IT’S EARTHWORM POO! WHY Vermicast you ask?! Well, for a start, mixing Vermicast with soil causes SEEDS to GERMINATE and GROW MORE QUICKLY! 😮😍🌱 It also increases root numbers and biomass, improves root stress tolerance, leads to earlier flowering of plants, and increases plant yields. How AMAZING is that?! 🌍🌱
DAY 352 of STARTING A FARM… Today we largely focused on our BIOCHAR. Most of our clients use it as CHARCOAL but one of our new clients is going to use it to PURIFY WATER! How AMAZING is that?! 😍💧 BIOCHAR has some INCREDIBLE APPLICATIONS! 🌍🌱

DAY 349 of STARTING A FARM… The day was off to a BAD START with a PUNCTURE on the TURNER. Thankfully we’ve recently discovered a MOBILE TYRE REPAIR company and George came to our RESCUE. We spent the rest of the day TURNING these 3 new COMPOST WINDROWS🪱🚜 Happy Weekend Everyone! 🌍🌱

DAY 347 of STARTING A FARM… The COMPOST SEASON seems to be slowly STARTING as we received orders for and DELIVERED 15 CUBIC METERS of COMPOST today 😍🚛
MOVING & TURNING COMPOST is the name of the game. Over and above the compost that we’ve already sieved, we have about 600 CUBIC METERS nearly ready - we need to turn it 2 or 3 more times over the next 2 or 3 weeks before it’ll be ready for sieving 🪱🚜😍🌍🌱
DAY 346 of STARTING A FARM… We started off the MORNING on a BAD foot with our driver accidentally LOCKING THE KEYS IN THE FRONT END LOADER! 😵🔑🚜 Thankfully Jay from Jays Mobile LOCKSMITH arrived promptly and opened the front end loader in a jiffy!
In other news, we MOVED some more compost, TURNED some more COMPOST and our FENCE is coming along nicely - we’re SANDING and RUSTPROOFING it. Take a LOOK AT THE PROGRESS 🌍🌱
DAY 344 of STARTING A FARM… We had FAMILY VISITING us from another Province this weekend and we gave them a TOUR OF THE FARM today. It was a lovely, warm, sunny, winter’s day 🥰☀️🌍🌱
DAY 343 of STARTING A FARM… Our SON LOVES getting involved at the farm. PICKING LEMONS is more CHALLENGING than you would think - especially for a 4 year old! It’s still LOTS OF FUN thought! 🥰🍋🌍🌱
DAY 342 of STARTING A FARM… It’s been a LONG but PRODUCTIVE WEEK of MAKING COMPOST. We’re very close to having another row ready to sieve! On another cheerful note, our Dietes are in flower, are yours?! 😍🌸🌍🌱
DAY 341 of STARTING A FARM… NO WORDS! Someone has DUMPED GARDEN WASTE on the ROAD just a few hundred METERS FROM our FREE GARDEN WASTE SITE and composting facility… 🤨🌍🌱
DAY 339 of STARTING A FARM… It’s TIDY UP TIME… We spent some time cutting the grass and neatening and tidying the upper section of the farm - by the cottage. We also removed a large tree stump, which was there before we moved in, and we filled the hole with some soil which we dug out from the tractor carport - it was a normal carport and we dug some soil out so that our tractor could fit. Waste not, want not! 😁🚜🌍🌱
DAY 335 of STARTING A FARM… We are SO GRATEFUL for ALL OF OUR CLIENTS, big and small! Please help us DIVERT your WASTE FROM LANDFILL by bringing your GARDEN WASTE to us - it’s FREE! 🙏🌍🌱
DAY 334 of STARTING A FARM… Today our friends from the NETHERLANDS came to VISIT us. They were here just before we started, were last here in April and are IMPRESSED BY THE PROGRESS that we’ve made 💪🪱🌍🌱
DAY 333 of STARTING A FARM… Well, this is DISAPPOINTING! Someone DUMPED a HUGE LOAD OF RUBBISH in our yard! 😠 We put a lot of trust in our clients and we don’t charge a delivery fee for the delivery of garden waste so it’s extra disappointing that someone did this! The worst part is that we’ll have to pay a private waste company to collect this and take it to landfill… 😔🚚🌍🌱
DAY 332 of STARTING A FARM… Looks can be deceiving… We moved THIS COMPOST WINDROW today and it took 120 LOADS - about 150 CUBIC METERS! 😱😍 This was a VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE! Bring on the compost season! 😊🌍🌱
