As dog owners, we quickly learn that a happy dog is an engaged dog. This is especially true for energetic dogs that need more than just physical exercise to stay content. In our household, we have two such dogs, and maintaining their mental stimulation is a crucial part of our daily routine. Without it, we face the challenge of managing two restless, whining canines. In this blog, we explore why stimulating your dog’s mind is essential and share effective ways to keep your furry friend mentally sharp and content.

Water is life. Not only do you need water to survive but it is an essential resource in all matter. 71% of earth is covered with water but only 1% of it is drinkable. As water is necessary for all life and especially for human survival, the importance of this resource is clear.
Here are some tips on saving water:
- Take a shorter showers and avoid taking baths
- Change to a water-efficient showerhead and half your consumption
- Fix leaky taps – even a slow drip can waste 30 litres a day
- Only use your dishwasher when its full and stop it before the drying cycle so it can air dry
- Sweep away leaves and debris rather than using a hose to spray them away
- Minimise how often you wash your car
- Put buckets in the shower for runoff water and under drains to catch water during rain for your garden
- Water your garden after 6pm
- Use a watering can to make sure the water goes where it’s needed

From a young age I had a big love for animals especially dogs, when I was 17 I went on to be the youngest person in South Africa to be certified as a dog handler. I then went on working and training dogs part time, and when I was pregnant with my youngest son I started training full time, as we just...

Both humans and animals, including our furry friends like dogs and cats, are equipped with upper and lower eyelids to safeguard their eyes from various threats such as damage, debris, UV rays, and bacteria. What's fascinating is that many animals, including dogs, possess an additional protective layer known as the third eyelid or nictitating membrane. This membrane, although not visible under typical circumstances, serves a crucial role in eye protection.
In dogs, the nictitating membrane is situated beneath the lower eyelid, nestled in the inner corner of the eye. This inner eyelid, also referred to as the haw, comprises three key components: the conjunctiva, a thin protective membrane, a T-shaped cartilage providing structural support, and a tear gland anchored by the cartilage.
The third eyelid in dogs extends across the eye, offering several essential functions:
- Shielding the eyes from potential scratches, particularly when dogs are traversing rough terrain or dense vegetation.
- Assisting in maintaining eye moisture by distributing tears evenly across the eyeball. Remarkably, the nictitating membrane contributes to approximately 50% of a dog's tear production.
- Serving as a natural mechanism for removing debris or foreign particles from the eye, helping to maintain ocular cleanliness and health.
Under normal circumstances, the third eyelid remains concealed in healthy and alert dogs, becoming visible primarily when they are sleeping or suddenly awakened. Despite its hidden nature, this protective membrane plays a pivotal role in preserving the well-being and functionality of a dog's eyes.

Yes, but with buts. You might have noticed that more pet foods are including rice…which got me thinking, can dogs eat rice?
Yes, dogs can eat and digest rice. Rice is a carbohydrate, so it doesn’t have a lot of other nutrients. Although, it is worth noting that white rice is usually recommended over brown rice for dogs. The reason for this is that white rice is usually processed in a fashion that makes it easier for dogs to digest. There are instances when veterinarians recommend rice as a great food for dogs suffering from common gastrointestinal issues. Other than that dogs don’t need those carbs.
If you do decide to try feeding your dog rice, and your vet says it’s okay, then make sure that you cook it simply in water. Do not add anything extra to the rice, including salts and spices, or oils and butter. Always make sure the cooked rice has cooled properly before feeding it to your dog. Note that just like humans, dogs cannot eat uncooked rice.
Be aware that rice is a carbohydrate and should not form the majority of your dog’s diet. You can add rice to your dog’s mealtimes sensibly but avoid feeding your dog too much rice as this may put your pet on a path to canine obesity.
So yes, dogs can rice, but our research also shows that there are much better sources for the nutrients your dogs need.

Summer vibes mean more outdoor fun for our furry pals, but let's not forget about those pesky mosquitoes! Here are some tips to keep your pup bite-free:
