Miles has a lesson to teach us all, Cycads are toxic! 😊

Cycad toxicity is a severe condition in dogs caused by ingesting cycad plants, particularly the seeds.

Toxic compounds include:

🐾 Cycasin: A glycoside compound found in cycad seeds, which is converted to a toxic compound called methylazoxymethanol (MAM) in the body.
🐾 MAM: A potent toxin that can cause liver failure, gastrointestinal damage, and neurological symptoms.

Symptoms:

🐾Gastrointestinal signs: Vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and lethargy.
🐾 Liver failure: Jaundice, dark urine, and pale gums.
🐾 Neurological symptoms: Seizures, tremors, ataxia, and coma.
🐾 Kidney damage: Increased thirst, urination, and kidney failure.

Treatment involves :

🐾Supportive care: Fluid therapy, anti-vomiting medication, and nutritional support.
🐾 Activated charcoal: Administration to absorb the toxin.
🐾 Liver protectants: Medications like s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) or N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to support liver function.
🐾Seizure control: Medications to manage seizures.

Prevention:

To avoid cycad toxicity, keep cycad plants out of reach of dogs, and consider removing them from your garden or home.

Miles and his siblings were very lucky and have fully recovered from the incident. They all wanted to make sure everyone knows about cycad toxicity to prevent other cases like this.❤️

Lola is a 14-year-old golden retriever. 🐾

This is Lola's feeding chair, and she has to eat in an elevated position because she has a condition called megaoesophagus.

Megaoesophagus is a condition characterized by the abnormal dilation of the oesophagus in dogs. Here's a comprehensive overview:

Causes:

1. Idiopathic: The most common cause, where the exact reason is unknown.
2. Genetic predisposition: Breeds like Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Labradors are more prone.
3. Neuromuscular disorders include myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, or esophageal dysmotility.
4. Foreign bodies or obstruction: Blockages in the oesophagus can cause dilation.
5. Inflammatory or infectious diseases: Esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or systemic infections.

Symptoms:

1. Regurgitation: Food and water come back up, often undigested.
2. Weight loss: Due to inadequate nutrition and calorie intake.
3. Coughing: Aspiration of food or water into the lungs can cause coughing.
4. Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing or pain while eating.
5. Halitosis: Bad breath due to food accumulation in the oesophagus.

Treatment:

1. Dietary changes: Feeding a high-calorie, nutrient-rich diet in small, frequent meals.
2. Elevated feeding: Raising the food and water bowls to reduce regurgitation.
3. Medications: Antacids, acid reducers, or prokinetics to manage GERD and oesophagal motility.
4. Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove foreign bodies or correct underlying conditions.

Lola is still loving life and is so good at sitting in her chair.❤️

Teeth out Tuesday with this sweet little face. Riley-Ross is a very happy American pit bull.
He came in due to a broken nail 😊 luckily, he was a big, brave boy, and we could remove the broken nail, disinfect, bandage and give him some anti-inflammatories.

He was feeling much better after the procedure, just look at his beautiful happy face.

Schumy is a very friendly 9-year-old male miniature Schnauzer. 🐶

Schumy comes in often to get his a**l glands expressed, but recently, we noticed a lump in the area that needed investigation. After a fine needle aspirate, bilateral a**lsaculectomy and histopathology, our suspicions were confirmed, Schumy’s lump was an a**l gland adenocarcinoma.🐾

Canine a**l gland adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that affects the a**l sacs of dogs. It's a relatively common tumour, making up about 17% of all peria**l tumours in dogs. Certain breeds, such as English Cocker Spaniels, are more prone to this type of cancer.

Some common symptoms of canine a**l gland adenocarcinoma include:

• Peria**l discomfort
• Tenesmus (painful or difficult defecation)
• Excessive licking
• Bleeding
• Changes in faecal shape

Diagnosing canine a**l gland adenocarcinoma typically involves:

1. Physical examination
2. Fine needle aspirate cytology of the primary mass
3. Histopathology (if cytology is inconclusive)
4. Staging to determine the extent of the cancer

Regular check-ups are so important, and in Schumy’s case, we were able to catch this new lump early, making surgical intervention and treatment much less complicated. 😃

Don't wait too long before coming in for a check-up. Book an appointment today and come in and experience a day at The Parks.❤️
