Schumy is a very friendly 9-year-old male miniature Schnauzer. 🐶

Schumy comes in often to get his a**l glands expressed, but recently, we noticed a lump in the area that needed investigation. After a fine needle aspirate, bilateral a**lsaculectomy and histopathology, our suspicions were confirmed, Schumy’s lump was an a**l gland adenocarcinoma.🐾

Canine a**l gland adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that affects the a**l sacs of dogs. It's a relatively common tumour, making up about 17% of all peria**l tumours in dogs. Certain breeds, such as English Cocker Spaniels, are more prone to this type of cancer.

Some common symptoms of canine a**l gland adenocarcinoma include:

• Peria**l discomfort
• Tenesmus (painful or difficult defecation)
• Excessive licking
• Bleeding
• Changes in faecal shape

Diagnosing canine a**l gland adenocarcinoma typically involves:

1. Physical examination
2. Fine needle aspirate cytology of the primary mass
3. Histopathology (if cytology is inconclusive)
4. Staging to determine the extent of the cancer

Regular check-ups are so important, and in Schumy’s case, we were able to catch this new lump early, making surgical intervention and treatment much less complicated. 😃

Don't wait too long before coming in for a check-up. Book an appointment today and come in and experience a day at The Parks.❤️

Hugo is one of our patients who has been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. He is extremely well-managed and is living a happy, healthy life. Isn't he just gorgeous? 😍

Canine idiopathic epilepsy (CIE) is a common neurological disorder affecting dogs, characterized by recurrent seizures with no identifiable underlying cause.

Idiopathic epilepsy accounts for 60-70% of all canine epilepsy cases, making it the most common type of epilepsy in dogs. The condition typically affects dogs between 1-5 years old.🐾

Certain breeds, such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers, are more predisposed to CIE.

The primary symptom of CIE is seizures, which can manifest in various forms, including:

• Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (convulsions)
• Partial seizures (localized muscle contractions)
• Cluster seizures (multiple seizures within 24 hours)
• Status epilepticus (prolonged or continuous seizures)

Diagnosing CIE involves:
1. A Thorough medical history and physical examination
2. Neurological examination
3. Blood tests to rule out other causes of seizures, such as renal or hepatic encephalopathies or toxins, to name some
4. MRI to exclude structural brain abnormalities

While CIE cannot be cured, treatment focuses on managing seizures and improving quality of life. With proper management, many dogs, like Hugo, can lead very happy and fulfilling lives.❤️

This cutie came in as a Stray 😊

He was unfortunately not Microchipped when he first came in so we couldn't let anyone know where he was and that he was safe and sound.🐾

Later, we learnt that this escape artist's name is Alfonzo, and his owner had been looking for him for hours.

We have now microchipped him, so in future, a vet can contact them as soon as possible to let them know where he is. ❤️

There are so many benefits to Microchipping your pet. Here are a few below:

🐾 Microchipping your pet provides permanent identification of your pet.
🐾 A microchip gives your pet the best chance of being reunited with you if they are to go missing.
🐾 The microchip is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades using a needle and an applicator.
🐾 A microchip can be implanted during a consult when your pet is awake. It is a quick and easy procedure.
🐾 The microchip is small, about the size of a grain of rice.
🐾 Your pet's microchip needs to be registered on a database for it to perform its function. At the Parks, we register your pet's microchip for you.
🐾 Your pet's microchip is extremely important if you are considering emigration.

Many pets are microchipped, but the chip is not registered or is not up to date.

Come to the parks animal care to get your pet microchipped or to check that your pets microchip is working, registered and up to date. 🐶

This brave boy is Floyd❤️

Floyd came in to see us for front limb lameness.

He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of malignant bone cancer.

This bone cancer can spread to other parts of the body, and amputation is the best option to prevent this. Luckily, Floyd's cancer had not yet spread, and we amputated as soon as possible.

Floyd handled his amputation like an absolute champion and is a much happier boy now that he is pain-free. ❤️

Floyd would like to raise awareness about osteosarcomas, so here are some facts about this bone cancer:

• Osteosarcomas account for 85% of all primary bone tumours in dogs
• Clinical signs most commonly involve slow progressive lameness but can occasionally be acute (sudden onset) lameness. There may or may not be localised swelling.
• Osteosarcomas are more common in dogs than cats
• Large and giant breed dogs are predisposed.
• 75% of osteosarcomas arise from the appendicular skeleton ( forelimbs and hindlimbs)
• Seen most commonly in dogs between the ages of 7 and 9 years.
• If allowed to spread, the lungs are the most common site for metastasis.

Early detection is always key, if your dog or cat is showing any signs of lameness, come visit The Parks Animal Care for a check up and musculoskeletal exam.🐾

This is Red, a gorgeous 11-year-old male greyhound. Red had developed multiple small skin masses that needed to be investigated.

Skin cancer is a condition we commonly see in dogs. These include mast cell tumours, carcinomas, melanomas , cutaneous lymphoma and hemangiosarcomas.

What factors predispose dogs or cats to skin cancer?
🐾Pigmentation of the skin
🐾Genetics
🐾Sun exposure and sunburn
🐾Chronic irritation, such as compulsive licking
🐾Coat thickness

Not all skin lumps are cancerous or malignant, but we always recommend checking for lumps or bumps.

Luckily, Reds lumps were removed, sent to the lab for histopathology and confirmed as benign skin tumors called Hemangiomas.❤️

Biscuit came in for aches and pains 😊

After a clinical exam and x-rays confirmed that biscuits pain was due to osteoarthritis. 🐾

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex condition involving inflammation and degeneration of one or more joints.

There are many factors involved in the development of osteoarthritis.

• conformation (how the animals are built)
• weight
• abnormal joint development (for example, hip dysplasia)
• lifestyle
• injury history
• nutritional history

Luckily, there are many ways to slow down joint degeneration and manage pain and inflammation associated with OA.

If your dog or cat has aches and pains, don't wait too long before getting it checked out. Slowing down joint degeneration and decreasing inflammation in a joint can make a huge difference if we start sooner rather than later.❤️
