This smiley girl is Pretzel; she has Canine Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis (GME), which is a rare and serious inflammatory disease that affects the brain and spinal cord of dogs.🐕🐾

Some facts about GME
• GME is thought to be an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain and spinal cord.

• Certain breeds, such as Poodles, Chihuahuas, and Maltese, are more prone to GME.

• GME typically affects middle-aged to older dogs (5-12 years).

Symptoms include:
1. Seizures: GME can cause seizures, which may be focal or generalized.
2. Loss of coordination: Affected dogs may exhibit loss of balance, stumbling, or difficulty walking.
3. Weakness: GME can cause weakness or paralysis of the face, legs, or tail.
4. Changes in behaviour: Affected dogs may exhibit behavioural changes, such as depression, anxiety, or aggression.
5. Vision loss: GME can cause vision loss or blindness.

Diagnosis involves:
1. MRI: An MRI is often used to visualize the brain and spinal cord.
2. Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) analysis: A CSF tap may be performed to collect fluid for analysis.
3. Blood tests: Blood tests may rule out other conditions that may have caused neurological signs and assess the dog's overall health.

Treatment
1. Immunosuppressive therapy: Medications such as prednisone, cyclosporine, or azathioprine may be used to reduce inflammation.
2. Anticonvulsant therapy: Medications such as phenobarbital or potassium bromide may be used to control seizures.
3. Supportive care: To manage their symptoms, affected dogs may require supportive care, such as physical therapy.

Show Pretzel some love ❤️. She is doing so well, and look at that beautiful smile.

Ada is a gorgeous little pup who was diagnosed with Giardia. She has responded exceptionally well to treatment. Ada would like to tell you all about Giardia🐾
Giardia in puppies is a common intestinal infection caused by the Giardia parasite.

Causes and Transmission:
🐾Contaminated water: Puppies can ingest Giardia cysts from contaminated water sources, such as ponds, lakes, or untreated water.
🐾Fecal-oral transmission: Puppies can become infected through contact with contaminated faeces, either directly or indirectly.
🐾Mother-to-puppy transmission: Infected mothers can transmit Giardia to their puppies during nursing or through contact with contaminated faeces.

Symptoms:
🐾Diarrhea: Giardia infection can cause diarrhoea, which may be acute or chronic.
🐾Vomiting: Some puppies may experience vomiting, which can lead to dehydration.
🐾Weight loss: Giardia infection can cause weight loss and malabsorption of nutrients.
🐾Abdominal pain: Puppies may exhibit abdominal pain, whining, or restlessness.
🐾Lethargy: Infected puppies may become lethargic or depressed.

Treatment:
🐾Metronidazole: This antibiotic is commonly used to treat Giardia infections in puppies.
🐾Fenbendazole: This anthelmintic medication can also be effective against Giardia.
🐾Supportive care: To manage dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, puppies may require supportive care, such as fluid therapy.

Prevention:
🐾 Provide clean water: Ensure puppies access clean, treated water.
🐾Proper sanitation: Dispose of faeces properly and keep living areas clean.
🐾Deworming: Regular deworming can help prevent Giardia infections.
🐾Vaccination: Some Giardia vaccines are available for puppies.

If you have a little puppy or a kitten showing any of the above signs, make an appointment at The Parks Animal Care today.❤️

A corneal ulcer in cats and dogs is a serious eye condition that requires prompt veterinary attention.

Causes include:
1. Trauma: Injury to the eye from scratches, bites, or accidents.
2. Infections: Bacterial or viral (e.g. feline herpesvirus).
3. Dry eye: Insufficient tear production or poor tear quality.
4. Anatomical issues: Abnormal eyelid anatomy, entropion (eyelid rolling inward), or ectropion (eyelid rolling outward).
5. Systemic diseases: Underlying conditions like diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or Cushing's disease.

Diagnosis involves a physical examination where a veterinarian will examine the eye and surrounding tissues. Fluorescein staining (as seen in the picture) is when a dye is applied to the eye to highlight the ulcer.
And if necessary a Schirmer tear test which measures tear production to assess dry eye.

Treatment:
1. Antibiotics or antivirals
2. Pain relief
3. Tear replacement therapy
4. Surgery In some cases.

Prognosis:
The prognosis depends on the severity of the ulcer, the underlying cause, and the promptness of treatment.

If your fur baby has any eye issues, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with us at the Parks Animal Care 🐾❤️
