A window into our recent teambuilding at the Johannesburg Zoo! 🦁👫🌿
This year, we took a walk on the wild side with our highly anticipated staff bash. Picnicking in style with the team and their families 🌭🍉, we then covered some serious ground in pursuit of spotting all kinds of creatures, big and small, slimy and furry. Well, as many as our legs could handle.

Laughter, adventure, and shared memories were the order of the day.

Check-in time with our two favourite, sleek and streamlined Dashies, Gertrude and Alfonzo…
We started this journey off with both of them tipping the scales at 8.8kg, with the goal of getting them to 7.5kg each.

The change to a weight-loss specific diet, some sneaky tricks when it came to treats and lots of walkies paid off!
Gerts is weighing in at a slender 7.4kg and Alfonzo, always the show-off, at 7.3kg.

Their 1.5kg weight-loss in human terms may not seem like a lot, but there has been a noticeable difference in their quality of life:

🐶 They have significantly more energy.
🐶 Gert’s is not promptly sitting in the middle of the path when she’s tired, she is now right upfront with the rest of the pack.
🐶 They are both swimming more.
🐶 Alfonzo is back to his bouncy self (we know they are not supposed to jump, but this klipspringer does what he wants).
🐶 They are breathing a lot easier with less panting. They are not wheezing nearly as much as they were.
🐶 Gert’s and Alfonzo is full of life, sleeping less. They are now outside exploring and seeking out things in the garden.

It’s 9 a.m. on a Tuesday, 2010. I am front of house of my brand-new shop, Le Pawtique. Originally, it was meant to be Le Petite Pet Spa (small pet spa), but we settled on Le Pawtique in the end. The idea for Le Pawtique struck me while watching the ridiculous fluffy dog van in "Dumb and Dumber" at the time. Three years later I’m sitting here feeling Dumberest. After returning to South Africa following an eight-year corporate stint abroad, I was determined to turn this dream into a reality. I doggy paddled for a while and worked a day job while I lived, breathed and dreamt of my pet project. My dream was grand, the stuff of a Barbie movie: a chic French-themed boutique pet spa – damask wallpaper, pink cages, diamante dog collars, blueberry vanilla facial scrub, pink tutus, and a sparkling chandelier. Securing the perfect location was a struggle. You see, up until this point in South Africa, dog parlours were kept out of sight. Finally, I found a spot in The Colony and hired a dog groomer named Emma. During our humble, early beginnings, I anxiously waited for customers, even considering paying someone to visit my shop. The desperation was palpable. Despite the slow start, I cherished the upmarket burst of doggie-liciousness I had created. The future was uncertain, with doubts about my decision and the market's readiness. Thoughts going through my mind: “I’ve put my entire life savings into this, what if this doesn’t work?” “What if the SA market is not ready for this?” “Maybe I should have opened in Sydney or Cape Town?” “Have I made a mistake with this centre?” “Have I made a mistake. Full stop?” Now to the present moment, 13 years later, and Le Pawtique is thriving. We moved to a bigger and better shop. We didn’t keep the diamante collars and tutus, but you’ll hard pressed not to find your premium product of choice. Our furry clientele has grown, and our loyal customer base is like family.
