I believe in positive training as the best method to achieve a healthy communication between owner and dog. A young puppy responds best to praise and treats rather then being bullied into the right behaviour. This does not mean I never use corrective techniques but rather that we focus on reward stimulation for behaviour and only use correction when absolutely necessary. Its important to never cre

ate a fearful, scared puppy or dog as this may lead to defensive aggression. I train group obedience, socialisation and basic tricks and agility. I also train one on one sessions for dogs with behavioural issues.

Very important points here for any one thinking about buying a puppy.

Buying a dog? Looking for a breeder? Why it pays to do your homework.

Puppies are adorable, let's be honest very hard to walk away from a Litter of pups without wanting to take one home with you. This is what scammers, puppy mills, puppy brokers, back yard breeders all feed off, the undeniable cuteness of a puppy.

Purebred dogs by and large come from closed gene pools and have been purpose bred for a specific task whether that be herding sheep, being your companion or hunting. These things are important to note, before you even look for a breeder do research on the breed, make sure the dog suits your lifestyle, the worst thing to do is buy a dog based solely on looks. Understand the breeds requirements ( how much exercise, grooming, type of training they may need, common health concerns in the breed). It will be unfair to both you and the dog if you can't provide it with the correct type of home.

NOW when it comes to sourcing a breeder for the decided dog breed it can be tricky. Yes the breeder should register their dogs with a regulated and internationally recognised Kennel union ( in South Africa that is KUSA). However just registering the litter is nowhere near enough to guarantee you are supporting an ethical breeder with the breeds best interest at heart. You want to make sure the breeder does relevant breed specific health tests, ask for the results. You are perfectly within your rights. You want to make sure the puppies are receiving some sort of neonatal development, ie not just locked in a kennel and no human interaction, preferably you want to see they are exposed to humans, different sounds, textures, being handled etc. You want to make sure they screen potential buyers as this ensures they are looking out for the puppies they produce. If the dog is a working breed ask for working titles. Ask the breeder what their goals and aspirations are for their breed and how they are breeding towards them? Yes good breeders do have plans!

Make sure the breeder only lets the dogs leave mom from 8 weeks any younger is determental to the puppies' development.

Lastly be prepared to wait for the right puppy and be prepared to pay for quality ( ie ticks all the boxes above).

REMEMBER supporting breeders who don't register their dogs, who don't health test, have no breeding goals often results in supporting a breeder who is just in it for the money producing unhealthy dogs. They will sell to anyone, those dog's might be given up to a shelter, they might be bred unethically themselves. STOP THE CYCLE, don't support them.

The other option is responsible rescue/adoption and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that either.
