We would like to inform our clients of a confirmed case of rabies in a dog in the southern peninsula. Please follow the link below to a notification on the City of Cape Town website for more information:

https://www.capetown.gov.za/Media-and-news/Public%20cautioned%20to%20be%20alert%20following%20confirmed%20dog%20rabies%20case

Rabies is a disease preventable by vaccination. Please make sure your pets have been fully vaccinated against rabies. Puppies and kittens are vaccinated twice in their first year of life, starting at 12 weeks of age, a booster may be given at a year of age, and thereafter every three years. Please make an appointment with your nearest TAH branch to have vaccinations updated if required.

Don’t approach stray or animals on the street, especially if showing signs of strange behaviour, salivation, paralysis or aggression. Rather report these to your local state vet. Our aim is to inform you and not to alarm you. Rabies is not common in the Western Cape and the chance of you encountering a rabid animal is very low. However, it is wise to be informed and vigilant.

There is a popularity in feeding raw to pets - please read the article below and take note of the risks involved.

Please take extra precautions when you are feeding your pet raw.

RISKS OF FEESING RAW DIETS TO DOGS & CONSIDERATIONS FOR HUMAN HEALTH

Daniel L. Chan, DVM, DACVECC, DECVECC, DACVIM (Nutrition), DACVN, MRCVS, University of London, North Mymms, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

ARTICLE LAST UPDATED MARCH 2023

IN LITERATURE:

Monsey O, Wareham K, Hammond A, et al. Evidence that faecal carriage of resistant Escherichia coli by 16-week-old dogs in the United Kingdom is associated with raw feeding. One Health. 2022;14:100370. doi:10.1016/j.onehlt.2022.100370

THE RESEARCH:

The World Health Organization describes the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria as a global threat to public health and an important issue for One Health, which is a collaborative approach to improving health outcomes that recognizes the interconnectedness among humans, animals, plants, and the environment.1,2 The rise in antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections in humans and animals, as well as the possibility of a direct link, are of concern.3 A relationship between feeding raw food diets to dogs and colonization and shedding of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria has been reported.4-6

This study explored risk factors associated with carriage of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in dogs and is one of the first studies to identify a possible direct link between antimicrobial-resistant bacteria carried by dogs and active human infections in the same geographic area.

A population of young dogs (n = 223) was comprehensively evaluated via pet owner questionnaires, bacterial cultures of f***l samples, and genetic analyses of antimicrobial-resistant f***l bacterial isolates. These findings were compared with the genetic lineage of urinary bacteria from human UTIs in the same geographic area. Feeding raw food (including commercially produced raw diets) was the only lifestyle factor associated with carriage of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the dogs.

Notably, fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli were a common isolate in dogs fed a raw food diet, and bacteria with the same resistance pattern and genetic lineage were identified in humans with UTIs in the same area. Because fluoroquinolones are classified as critically important for human health, identification of bacteria resistant to this class of antimicrobials should cause alarm and prompt investigation of measures to effectively eliminate this problem.

Owners who feed home-prepared and/or commercially produced raw diets should be aware of the risk to immunocompromised individuals who come into contact with young dogs fed raw food.

TAKEAWAYS:

Key pearls to put into practice:

🐕 When caring for dogs fed raw diets, veterinary staff should take additional precautions (eg, wearing personal protective equipment, practicing judicious hand hygiene) to avoid being colonized with bacteria that may be multidrug resistant.

🐈 Owners who feed their dogs raw diets should be educated on the potential health risks for themselves and others.

🐕 Veterinary staff and pet owner awareness of One Health issues (eg, need for effective antimicrobial stewardship) may help reverse concerning trends that threaten human and animal health.

LEPTOSPOROSIS INFORMATION

In dogs, the early signs of disease can be vague and non-specific.

If it is not successfully treated early, it may progress into potentially fatal hepatic and/or renal failure. Recently, different clinical presentations have been recognised, such as haemorrhagic pulmonary syndrome.

Infected animals shed bacteria in their urine.

Hosts can shed leptospires for months or even years. Once shed, leptospires can survive in warm, wet conditions for months, ready to invade new hosts

Direct transmission occurs when an animal encounters infected urine; indirect transmission occurs through contact with contaminated water, soul, food, bedding, or other inanimate objects.

Most worryingly, infected dogs can be a source of infection for people (Zoonosis). It is a critical component of disease control to limit shedding from infected dogs.

Broad risk factor for Leptospira exposure put virtually all dogs at risk. However, the highest risk activities include:

🐕 Contact with known reservoir species (e.g. wild rodents) - e.g farm dogs
🐕 Hunting or herding dogs
🐕 Exploring the outdoors
🐕 Access to still or slow-moving water sources.

How can we prevent dogs from contracting Leptospirosis (Lepto)?

🐕 Vaccination - this vaccine is not part of the routine annual vaccines and will need to be asked for specifically.
🐕 Take care when taking your pets our for walks around free, still standing water.
