🍲 Could Your Pet Have a Food Allergy? 🍲

Just like humans, our pets can have food allergies too! When their immune system reacts to certain ingredients in their diet—like beef, chicken, dairy, eggs, or grains—it can lead to uncomfortable and persistent symptoms. 🐾

Common Signs of Food Allergies:
Chronic Ear Infections 👂
Gastrointestinal Issues (vomiting or diarrhea) 🍽️
Persistent Itching and Scratching 🐾
Skin Infections and hot spots 🌡️

Unlike environmental allergies, food allergy symptoms can stick around all year, making your pet feel miserable.

How to Help Your Pet:

Identify the Culprit: An elimination diet is key to pinpointing the specific allergen causing your pet’s discomfort.

Avoid the Allergen: Once you know what’s causing the reaction, it’s important to avoid it completely. Switching to a hypoallergenic or limited-ingredient diet can work wonders.

Consult Your Vet: We can help guide you through the elimination diet process and recommend the best food options to keep your pet healthy and happy.

Give Your Pet the Relief They Deserve!
With the right approach, managing food allergies can make a world of difference in your pet’s comfort and quality of life.

📞 Suspect a food allergy? Contact us at Randparkridge Veterinary Hospital at 011 678 7526. Let’s work together to find the right diet for your pet!

🚨 Is Your Pet Suffering from Contact Allergies? 🚨

Sometimes, it’s what your pet touches that causes trouble! Contact allergies happen when your pet’s skin comes into direct contact with an allergen—anything from certain plants like poison ivy, chemicals, synthetic materials, or even some types of bedding. 🌿🧴

Signs to Look For:
Redness and Itching on the skin
Blistering or Sores on affected areas
Localized Reactions often on the paws, belly, or chin
These symptoms can cause serious discomfort, but there’s good news—managing contact allergies is possible!

How to Protect Your Pet:

Identify and Avoid the Allergen: If you notice a reaction, try to pinpoint what your pet came into contact with and avoid it in the future.

Use Hypoallergenic Products: Regular baths with hypoallergenic shampoos can help soothe irritated skin. Topical treatments or medicated wipes can also provide relief.

Consult Your Vet: If symptoms persist, it’s important to seek professional advice. We can help you develop a tailored plan to manage your pet’s contact allergies effectively.
Don’t Let Allergies Hold Your Pet Back!
A little extra care goes a long way in keeping your pet happy and comfortable, even when allergies strike.

Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) – What Is It and How Contagious Is It? 🐾

Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) is one of the most common and serious infectious diseases in cats, especially in Southern Africa. It’s a retrovirus that weakens a cat's immune system, leaving them vulnerable to life-threatening infections, cancers, and other illnesses. FeLV can be devastating, but with proper prevention and awareness, you can protect your cat from this highly contagious virus.

What Is FeLV?
FeLV belongs to the same family of viruses as HIV in humans, but it only affects cats—humans and other animals cannot be infected. Once a cat contracts FeLV, the virus can either:

Stay dormant, allowing some cats to live a normal life without ever developing symptoms, or
Spread through the bloodstream, weakening their immune system, which can lead to severe illnesses like anemia, lymphoma, and chronic infections.
Sadly, once a cat is persistently infected, there is no cure for FeLV, and it significantly shortens the cat’s lifespan.

How Contagious Is FeLV?
FeLV is highly contagious among cats, especially those that spend time outdoors or live in multi-cat households. It spreads primarily through direct contact between cats, such as:

Saliva: Cats can transmit FeLV by grooming each other, sharing food or water bowls, or even through mutual affection like licking.

Nose-to-Nose Contact: Close contact where cats touch noses or faces can result in the transmission of the virus via nasal secretions.

Bites: Cats can also spread FeLV through bite wounds, which are common during territorial disputes among outdoor cats.

Urine and F***s: Shared litter boxes can be another source of transmission, as infected cats can shed the virus in their urine or f***s.

Mother to Kitten: A FeLV-positive mother can pass the virus to her kittens either in the womb, through nursing, or through close contact after birth.

How Easily Does It Spread?
Cats living in close quarters, such as multi-cat households, shelters, or stray cat colonies, are especially at risk. While some cats exposed to the virus can fight it off, many will become persistently infected. Once a cat becomes infected, they may remain asymptomatic for a while, but the virus can silently damage their immune system over time, making them susceptible to secondary infections.

It’s important to note that FeLV doesn’t survive long outside the cat’s body. Unlike other diseases, FeLV is not spread through the environment, meaning you can’t get it from petting an infected cat or from surfaces they’ve touched. FeLV requires direct cat-to-cat contact for transmission.

What Are the Symptoms?
The symptoms of FeLV may take months or even years to appear. Some common signs include:

Lethargy and weakness
Weight loss and poor appetite
Pale gums (anemia)
Persistent respiratory infections
Swollen lymph nodes
Diarrhea or vomiting
Prevention Is Key
The best way to protect your cat from FeLV is vaccination and early testing. If you’re bringing a new cat into your home, especially from a shelter, make sure they’re tested before introducing them to other cats.

Vaccination: Although there’s no cure, the FeLV vaccine can offer protection, especially for high-risk cats that spend time outdoors or live with other cats.

Regular Testing: Annual FeLV testing is recommended, particularly for cats with potential exposure to infected cats.

Quarantine: If your cat is FeLV-positive, it’s best to keep them indoors and separate from other cats to prevent the virus from spreading.

Conclusion
FeLV is a serious health risk to cats in Southern Africa, but with the right precautions, you can protect your feline friend. Regular testing, vaccination, and limiting exposure to other cats can make all the difference in preventing the spread of this contagious virus.

📞 Contact us at 011 678 7526 or email [email protected] to book a FeLV test or learn more about vaccination options.

🎆 Help Your Pets Cope with Noise Phobia 🎆

Loud noises like fireworks, thunderstorms, and even construction can be terrifying for our furry friends. Noise phobia is a common issue in pets, leading to extreme anxiety and stress when exposed to loud or sudden sounds. But don’t worry—there are ways you can help your pet feel safe and secure during these noisy moments.

Signs Your Pet Might Have Noise Phobia:
Trembling or Shaking 😟
Pacing or Restlessness 🚶‍♂️
Hiding or Seeking Shelter 🛏️
Excessive Barking or Meowing 🗣️
Panting or Drooling 💦
Trying to Escape (scratching at doors or windows) 🏃‍♂️

How to Help Your Pet:

Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy area in your home where your pet can retreat during noisy events. Include their favorite bed, toys, and maybe even some calming music.

Use Calming Products: Consider using products like calming collars, diffusers, or sprays that release soothing pheromones to help your pet relax.

Distract with Positive Activities: Engage your pet with their favorite toys or treats to distract them from the noise. Interactive toys or puzzle feeders can keep their mind occupied.

Stay Calm and Reassuring: Pets pick up on our emotions, so try to stay calm and offer gentle reassurance. Your calm presence can help reduce their anxiety.

Consider Professional Help: If your pet’s noise phobia is severe, speak to your veterinarian about possible treatments, including anxiety medications or behavior therapy.

We’re Here to Help!
At Randparkridge Veterinary Hospital, we understand how distressing noise phobia can be for both pets and their owners. If you’re concerned about your pet’s reaction to loud noises, we’re here to help with expert advice and support.

📞 Need guidance or want to learn more? Contact us at 011 678 7526. Let’s work together to keep your pet calm and comfortable, no matter how loud it gets outside!

Onyx and Bee, two 11-month-old Belgian Malinois sisters, are searching for their forever families.

Both have been spayed and have received their first round of vaccinations. Given their breed, they require knowledgeable and patient families who can provide the care and understanding they need.

Available for Adoption Individually Onyx and Bee are available for adoption separately, allowing each dog to find the best fit for their unique personalities and your household.

Compatibility with Other Pets Both dogs are currently friendly with other dogs. However, their behavior around cats has not yet been determined, so households with feline companions should proceed with caution.

These girls have been rescued and have required medical care, which we are continuing to provide. We would greatly appreciate any donations to help cover the unavoidable costs, such as medications.
If you wish to contribute, please donate to
Randparkridge Veterinary Hospital,
ABSA Bank 4067671242, branch 632005, with the reference "Onyx&Bee."

Adoption Process Please be aware that adopting one of these girls involves a thorough vetting process, including a home inspection and an adoption fee that covers their second vaccinations and microchip. Additionally, you will need to participate in training sessions with either Adam Lax or Natasha Lax, who have both been working closely with the sisters.

If you believe you can provide the loving home Onyx and Bee deserve, please contact Natasha at Randparkridge Veterinary on 011 678 7526 to arrange an introduction.

Important Note: These dogs are not suitable for security work and will not be placed with any companies.

🚨 Does Your Pet Suffer from Flea Allergy Dermatitis? 🚨

Flea bites are more than just a nuisance for some pets—they can trigger Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), a hypersensitive reaction to flea saliva that causes severe itching and discomfort. Even just one tiny bite can set off a chain reaction, leaving your pet miserable. 😿🐾

What to Watch For:
Intense Scratching or Biting (especially around the base of the tail, groin, and belly)
Red, Irritated Skin 🌡️
Hair Loss in affected areas
Secondary Skin Infections from constant scratching and biting

How to Help Your Pet:
Strict Flea Control: Regular use of flea preventatives is a must! Keep those pesky fleas at bay with consistent treatments.

Environmental Care: Don’t forget to treat your home and yard—fleas can hide in carpets, bedding, and outdoor areas.

Soothing Relief: In some cases, medications may be necessary to alleviate your pet’s itching and reduce inflammation.

Don’t Let Fleas Win!
Flea allergy dermatitis can be managed with the right approach. Regular flea control and a bit of extra care can keep your pet comfortable and itch-free.

📞 Need advice or flea treatment? Contact us at Randparkridge Veterinary Hospital at 011 678 7526. Let’s make sure your pet enjoys a flea-free life!

🐾 The Terrifying Risks of Invalid Vaccinations—A Matter of Life or Death
NOT ALL VACCINATION DRIVES ARE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your pet’s vaccine isn’t administered by a registered veterinarian, it might not be recognized as valid. This isn’t just a minor oversight—it could be a life or death situation. Here’s why:

🚨 Quarantine or Worse: If your pet is suspected of having rabies and their vaccination isn’t valid, they could be treated as completely unvaccinated. This could mean immediate quarantine, locking your pet away for months in isolation. But that’s not the worst part...

⚠️ Legal Nightmares and Travel Horrors: Imagine arriving at your destination only to find out your pet isn’t allowed in because their vaccination isn’t recognized. They could be thrown into quarantine, sent back, or worse—seized by authorities. This is every pet owner’s nightmare, and it can be avoided.

❗ The Unthinkable—Euthanasia: Rabies is one of the deadliest diseases known to both animals and humans. If your pet has been exposed to rabies and their vaccine isn’t valid, authorities might have no choice but to order euthanasia to prevent the disease from spreading. This heartbreaking scenario is a real possibility if you don’t ensure your pet’s vaccinations are valid.

Don’t Gamble with Your Pet’s Life—Make Sure Vaccinations Are Done by a Registered Veterinarian! It’s the only way to ensure your pet is protected, their vaccines are valid, and their life isn’t put at unnecessary risk.

Contact us today for more information and stay tuned for our upcoming vaccination savings and discounts at Randparkridge Veterinary Hospital!
