Dachshunds – Badger Hunters
How about this? Fun Facts about our pets.
Dachshunds – Badger Hunters
Originally bred in Germany in the 15th century, Dachshunds were designed for hunting badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. Their name literally translates to “badger dog” in German (“Dachs” meaning badger and “Hund” meaning dog). Their elongated bodies and strong legs made them perfect for digging into badger dens.
Types of Dachshunds
Dachshunds come in three coat types and two sizes:
Coat Types:
Smooth Coat: Short and shiny fur that is low-maintenance.
Long Coat: Flowing, soft fur that requires regular grooming.
Wire Coat: Coarse, thick fur with a beard and eyebrows, giving a rugged look.
Sizes:
Standard Dachshunds: Weigh between 7–14.5 kg, bred for hunting larger animals like badgers.
Miniature Dachshunds: Weigh up to 5 kg, developed for hunting smaller game like rabbits.
Personality Traits
Dachshunds are known for their bold, lively, and independent personalities. Despite their small size, they have a big-dog attitude.
Affectionate and Loyal: They form strong bonds with their families and are excellent companions.
Curious and Brave: Bred to be hunters, they are naturally curious and fearless, sometimes to the point of stubbornness.
Energetic: They have surprising energy levels and love to play, though they are equally content with a good nap.
Vocal: They can be quite barky, often alerting their owners to any unusual sounds.
Ideal Body Condition
Due to their elongated bodies, Dachshunds are prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so maintaining an ideal body weight is critical:
Ideal Weight:
Standard: 7–14.5 kg.
Miniature: Under 5 kg.
Key Signs of Healthy Condition:
A visible waistline when viewed from above.
Ribs that can be felt without excess fat covering.
Balanced, agile movement.
Owners should monitor their dog’s diet and exercise to avoid obesity, which puts additional strain on their spine.

Guide to Protecting Your Pets During New Year Celebrations 2025
Guide to Protecting Your Pets During New Year Celebrations 2025
The New Year celebrations can be exciting for us but overwhelming and even dangerous for our pets. Fireworks, loud music, and disruptions to routine can cause anxiety and lead to accidents.
Here’s how to keep your furry friends safe and calm during this festive time:
1. Create a Safe Space
Designate a quiet, secure area in your home where your pet can retreat.
Include their favorite blanket, toys, and bedding to help them feel safe.
Play calming music or white noise to mask external sounds.
Crate training can be extremely useful in these instances, as it allows you to create a safe and familiar space for each pet. Additionally, utilizing soundproofing in a smaller area can help pets cope better during loud celebrations such as fireworks displays.
2. Ensure Proper Identification
Make sure your pet’s collar, tags, and microchip details are up to date with your current contact information.
Microchipping your pet, if not already done, is a permanent way to ensure they can be identified if they get lost.

3. Use Calming Aids
Speak to our team at Randparkridge Veterinary Hospital for safe options like pheromone sprays, anxiety wraps, or prescribed calming medications.
Natural remedies, like Rescue Remedy, can also help. If you utilize natural remedies, ensure you follow the loading dose. If unsure, chat to us—we will assist you.
If your pet requires prescription medication, you will need to bring them in for evaluation by a veterinarian. There are many different types of medications, and each pet must be screened before administering these medications as they can be dangerous if used incorrectly.
Ensure you pre-order any type of aid or medication well before the New Year celebrations to avoid last-minute delays.
4. Keep Pets Indoors
During fireworks, keep your pets inside to reduce the risk of them running away in fear.
Ideally, ensure there is s
