Puppy School! 🐾

Please note that for 2025, we will offer two different days and time slots for Puppy 1. There will be a Monday afternoon class which will be held from 17h00-18h00 and a Saturday morning class held from 9h30-10h30, the curriculums will be the same however will assist those who are unable to attend over weekends.

Puppy 1 runs over a 6 week course every Saturday morning and Monday afternoon at the Brackenhurst Veterinary Hospital. In our 6 week course, we cover will behaviour theory, basic obedience, leash walking, confidence boosting, desensitisation and exposure to common items such as nail clippers, brushes, cones etc. we will also do some basic nose work as part of our confidence boosting! Puppies will also be able to socialise safely with one another throughout our course. This course is for pups 5 months and under.

There is no longer a need to wait for intakes to happen, pups can join at anytime as long as they have had their 2nd vaccinations and once their 6 weeks are complete, they will receive a certificate of completion. The first lesson which is a theory lesson is done online via Whatsapp video call one evening through the week as pups do not attend the theory lesson, this gives us enough time for Q&As at the end of each theory session.

We are a force-free positive reinforcement based school therefore we use no aversive equipment. We encourage our pups to come to class with a harness and a leash, alternatively a flat collar however please note that we do not allow choker chains, prong collars, half-slips (martingale collars) or slip leads for our training.

When coming to class, all you will need to bring is your pup, your pup's harness and leash as well as lots of yummy treats that we make use of for our training.

The cost of the 6 week course is R1000 per pup.

Behaviour walks may resume with existing clients from this week - we also have a few walking slots available, please enquire if you'd like to take one.

Private classes will resume from this week and new private class clients may begin from this week.

We are catching up on admin after the festive season so we kindly ask for patience as we do.

Something I have spent a lot of time focusing on this year is behaviour walking and it has become such a passion of mine. Our behaviour walks are not simply walking around but rather focusing on building up confidence, helping reactivity and fear, working on leash skill and overall response on walks. I have seen such improvements with the babies that I have been able to walk. Thank you to all the wonderful pet parents who have entrusted me with such an important part of a dog's life - I do not take it lightly.

Well done Winston on completing your second course! You have done so well and I know there will only be improvements from here. From the SPCA to taking over your dad's side of the bed and only wanting Woolworths chicken as treats 🤣 your bum is firmly in the butter boy! Great job Mabel on focusing on his needs and working where he is at! 🐾⭐️🥰

Oscar and Simon, these are very special boys! When I was first called in, Simon and Oscar were not getting along. Simon had quite a severe health issue that was thankfully resolved through a surgery however recovering from that, also meant that we needed to help these boys' relationship. As our weeks went on, the fighting stopped, the boys started going on little outings and adventures together, they were mentally stimulated and the fighting stopped. The best part is that the boys started playing together 🥰 I'm so proud of the work that these clients put in with their babies, it truly does show by the outcome! And since they did so well even with the bits of trick type training we did - they deserved certificates too! 🐾

Well done to beautiful Kaydee on completing her first course! She is such a special girl - she didn't have the best start in life but she has now landed her bottom firmly in the butter! Kaydee struggles with a bit of reactivity to other doggies around her however through her course she met 3 new dogs, trailed with them and her owners are learning how to manage her when she spots a trigger and how to help her cope. Really proud of you guys! 💖⭐️🐾
