🚨 Rat Poison Toxicity in Dogs and Cats:
What Every Pet Owner Needs to Know

Rodenticides (rat and mouse poisons) are a common cause of poisoning in pets, especially curious dogs and outdoor-roaming cats. These substances are designed to kill rodents, but they can just as easily harm or kill your pets. Eco-friendly labelled products are not pet safe.

🧪 Types of Rat Poisons and How They Affect Pets
Rodenticides come in several types each with different toxic effects, the most common being:
1. Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, bromadiolone)
* Prevent blood from clotting, leading to internal bleeding.
* Signs: Lethargy, coughing blood, pale gums, bruising, nosebleeds.
* Irreversible Effect: If untreated, massive internal hemorrhage can cause organ failure or death.
2. Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3)
* Causes dangerous elevations in calcium and phosphorus.
* Signs: Vomiting, increased thirst/urination, weakness, seizures.
* Irreversible Effect: Kidney failure: calcium deposits in the kidneys may lead to permanent damage even with treatment.

⚠️ Why It’s So Dangerous
* Delayed symptoms: Many toxins take hours to days to show effects, by which time serious damage may have occurred.
* No antidote for some poisons: Unlike anticoagulants (which may respond to vitamin K1), toxins like bromethalin and cholecalciferol have no specific antidote.

🚨 What To Do If You Suspect Poisoning
1. Do not wait for symptoms - time is critical.
2. Bring your pet and the product label or box to the nearest veterinary hospital.
3. Do NOT induce vomiting without professional guidance (some poisons cause caustic burns).

🛡️ Prevention Tips
* Never use rodenticides in areas accessible to pets.
* Store products in sealed, pet-proof containers.
* Consider non-toxic pest control alternatives.
* Supervise outdoor time for dogs; limit cats’ outdoor roaming.

🐾 Final Thoughts
Rat poison toxicity is a medical emergency. Early intervention can save lives, but some forms of damage, especially to the brain and kidneys, can be irreversible, even with aggressive treatment.
If you suspect your pet has been exposed to rodenticide, contact your veterinarian.

We have yet another appreciation post where we say thank you to Katja for her many years of donating blood to a countless number of patients. Katja is by far our most “capped” donor and we are so very grateful. We will miss you and say happy retirement!
