FLYING CARPET

g Judpot -Zahir Shah, by Kabool
Bred by Riethuiskraal Stud
Owned by Riethaan Beleggings CC (Nom:Yana Da Corte)

A bargain R15 000 purchase from the 2019 KZN Yearling Sale, Flying Carpet made his purchase price look like a gift when he won the 2021 G1 World Sports Betting Presents The Gauteng Summer Cup.
Flying Carpet had done creditably in a succession of feature races but most analysts believed a few Summer Cup rivals had his measure. However, under a fine ride from Calvin Habib, Flying Carpet proved his doubters wrong with a gutsy win in a race which had been postponed due to heavy rain. Among his beaten rivals in the Summer Cup that year were champions Sparkling Water and War Of Athena, Triple Crown winner Malmoos and 2022 Summer Cup victor Puerto Manzano.
Prior to his Summer Cup win, Flying Carpet had won twice and ran fourth, behind subsequent Triple Crown winner Malmoos, in the G1 World Sports Betting S A Classic of 2021.
The Riethuiskraal Stud bred Flying Carpet, one of five G1 winners for his sire Judpot, was produced by the twice winning Kabool mare Zahir Shah.

🌞Summer Cup Spotlight 🔦

ZILLZAAL

g Silvano -Zulaal, by Giant’s Causeway
Bred by Al Adiyaat South Africa (Pty) Ltd
Owned by Al Adiyaat

Like the former Tarry trained Summer Cup winner Aslan, Zillzaal was sired by the late Silvano. He showed considerable promise at three, winning at the second time of asking, and running fourth in both the G2 Gauteng Guineas and G1 SA Classic, before finishing second, beaten just a length, in the G1 SA Derby. Bred to improve with age, Zillzaal made a winning four-year-old debut when victorious in a graduation plate over 1600 metres. Following an unplaced run in the 2019 G2 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile, Zillzaal bounced back to win the G1 Gauteng Chris Ge**er Summer Cup next time out. Under a great ride from Denis Schwarz, Zillzaal made all the running to hold off champion Soqrat and win by nearly half a length. The 2019 Summer Cup was a real triumph for the Tarry yard, with the stable also sending out Al Mutawakel to finish third. (Both Zillzaal and Al Mutawakel raced for their breeder Al Adiyaat). Following his Summer Cup triumph, Zillzaal unfortunately had to miss the rest of the season following a colic operation. However, the gelding bounced back to win the 2022 Listed Drum Star Handicap, where he accounted for his multiple graded stakes winning stablemate Shango by nearly a length and a half.

A winner of five of 29 starts who earned R2,341,525, Zillzaal was one of nearly 30 G1 winners for his outstanding sire Silvano, while his unraced dam Zulaal, a daughter of champions Giant’s Causeway and Surfside, is a full-sister to G3 Cougar II Handicap winning sire Irish Surf.

TILBURY FORT

g Horse Chestnut -Colleen, by Restructure
Bred by James Armitage
Owned by Messrs M A Currie, W H Jacobs, E C Van Niekerk, Craig Zoghby, Sean Tarry Racing (Pty) Ltd & Mrs B M A Lahoud

After breaking his maiden at the fourth time of asking, Tilbury Fort went on to finish second to his stablemate Matador Man in the Listed Secretariat Stakes. After winning his following start, the son of Horse Chestnut would go on to contest both the CTS 1600 and G2 Gauteng Guineas, with Tilbury Fort finishing a creditable fourth in the Guineas. He would go on to show his class when finishing second in the 2017 G2 Betting World 1900, where Tilbury Fort finished behind only Ten Gun Salute.

After an unplaced run in the G1 Vodacom Durban July, Tilbury Fort seemed to lose his way but bounced back to winning ways the following year, reeling off back-to-back wins. A runner-up effort in the G3 Jubilee Handicap, beaten just a shorthead, Tilbury Fort again contested the July, only to be beaten just over eight lengths. He would get his day in the sun, however, when victorious in the 2018 G1 G-Bets Gauteng Summer Cup, when ridden to victory by Lyle Hewitson. Remarkably, Tilbury Fort was one of six winners for the Tarry Yard on that Summer Cup day.

A son of South African Horse Of The Year and Triple Crown winner Horse Chestnut, the Sandown Stud bred Tilbury Fort won 6 of 38 starts and earned R2,229,825.

A half-brother to the yard’s talented Listed Secretariat Stakes winner Lance, subsequently the sire of champion filly Quid Pro Quo, Liege broke his maiden at the third time of asking before going on to finish second in the G3 Graham Beck Stakes and third in the G3 Politician Stakes.

The progressive Liege ended his three-year-old campaign with a victory in the G3 Jubilee Handicap at Turffontein. After finishing a close second in the 2016 G2 Victory Moon Stakes, Liege would go on to run fourth, behind dual winner Master Sabina, in the 2016 G1 Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup. However, the Dynasty gelding would make amends the following year, when Liege downed a high-class field to win the G1 Sansui Summer Cup of 2017. In the run for home, Girl On The Run continued to gallop powerfully as Orchid Island flattered briefly, with Fort Ember scooting up the inside rail. At the 450m marker, Raymond Danielson glanced to his inside as he drove Liege through a gap to grab the advantage. The pair would go on to score by two and a quarter lengths, with Liege’s beaten rivals including the likes of Coral Fever, Orchid Island, French Navy, and Triple Crown winner Abashiri.

Liege would go on to enjoy further graded stakes success when he won the 2019 G3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup and would retire from the track having won seven of 35 starts with earnings of R2 093 800.
Liege was one of 18 G1 winners sired by former South African Horse Of The Year and Vodacom Durban July winner Dynasty. The regally bred gelding was one of four stakes winners produced by the top-class Jallad mare Lyrical Linda, whose eight wins included a victory in the G1 Garden Province Stakes.

ASLAN

g Silvano -Cry For The Lion, by Elliodor
Bred by Glenellen Stud
Owned by Mrs L M Leisher & Brooklyn Bullet Trust

Classy gelding Aslan provided the Tarry yard with their first Summer Cup win when he triumphed in the 2009 race. Lightly raced going into the Summer Cup, Aslan was given a fine ride by Felix Coetzee, who kept the Silvano gelding going well to hold off a fast finishing Magical and win by a long head.
There was a tense wait before the final result was posted up and Aslan's connections were able to celebrate a G1 win victory from a horse who had only shed his maiden certificate in May that year. Among those beaten by Aslan in the 2009 Sansui Summer Cup were graded stakes winners Lion's Blood, Oracy, Senor Versace, Likeithot, Eight Street and the Tarry trained dual G1 winner Buy And Sell.
Aslan, who won the Summer Cup on his ninth racecourse appearance, would go on to show his class, and versatility, in subsequent races.

Aslan went on to be named Equus Champion Stayer of 2011, when he downed stablemate Kolkata to win the G1 Canon Gold Cup over 3200m at Greyville.
In total, the champion won five of 32 starts and earned R2,245,380 in prize money, with Aslan winning from 1800m to 3200m. One of four Summer Cup winners for six time South African Champion Sire Silvano, Aslan was produced by the unraced Elliodor mare Cry For The Lion, dam of seven other winners including G1 Premier's Champion Stakes runner up Captain In Charge. Cry For The Lion also produced Juillard, dam of G3 Tommy Hotspur Stakes winner Gallic Princess.
