Racing fans are in for a treat on Saturday. Not only does Saturday see the first leg of the Triple Crown take place in the form of the G2 TAB Gauteng Guineas, but the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, the first leg of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara, will also take place at Turffontein.

Sean Tarry Racing is no stranger to enjoying success in Triple Crown and Triple Tiara races, and the yard will, once again, field runners in both the Gauteng Guineas and Gauteng Fillies Guineas.

The stable's numerous Triple Tiara stars include the likes of Rain In Holland, Siren's Call, and Return Flight, while Sean and his yard saddled the likes of Legal Eagle, Pomodoro, and Al Sahem to win one leg of the Triple Crown itself.

Alastor caused a 50-1 upset when he won the 2005 G1 J&B Met. Under veteran jockey Garth Puller, the son of Al M***i and the filly Icy Air fought out a desperate finish, half a length separating the pair.

In winning the Met, Alastor accounted for champions Icy Air, Winter Solstice, and Ilha Da Vitoria, as well as 2004 G1 GommaGomma Summer Cup hero Tyson.

He also provided Sean with his first G1 win as a trainer. An emotional Tarry dedicated the victory to his late father and spoke at length about Garth Puller’s dedicated hard work in preparing the horse.

Prior to his Met win, Alastor had won eight races, including the G3 Cup Trial, and finished runner-up in the G3 Premiers Handicap and fourth, beaten less than three lengths, in the G1 Queen’s Plate. He would go on to add the G2 Hawaii Stakes to his tally of wins.

A son of champion sire Al M***i, Alastor was produced by Mecca Road mare Damascus Road, winner of eight races, including the Tibouchina Stakes. Alastor aside, Damascus Road produced Syrian Flame, the dam of G3 Lebelo Handicap winner National Flame and granddam of G1 Cape Derby/G1 Premiers Champion Stakes winner Eyes Wide Open. Alastor retired having won ten of 59 starts and earned R1,907,490 in prize money.
