Youngberries, blueberries and now strawberries!
Early spring to mid summer is strawberry time in South Africa and ours seem to be thriving, with some supersized fruit!

Strawberries are excellent container plants.
They require fertile, well composted soil.
Full sun and water every second day or when the top 2 centimeters seems dry.

Strawberries are high in vitamin C, antioxidants are good for your heart 😉

Its Thursday Urban Farmers – almost the weekend!
Forget those work blues and focus on your blueberry bushes!
These can be grown in a fair size pot (45L to 90L).
For blueberries to flourish, they require full sun and an acidic, compost rich, well mulched soil.
They’re yet another one of nature’s superfoods high in antioxidants.

Whilst most leafy greens and herbs don’t require insect pollination to grow and produce food, bees are still extremely important in our ecosystem and to fruit production.
At Patch, we’re lucky enough to have a bee colony take up residence in an unused sisal, so our plants are always being tended to by these dedicated little insects, especially the strawberries!

For those who have a bit more space and enjoy berries, a youngberry bush is definately worth getting!
We can tell this year will be especially rewarding if all the blossoms are anything to go by.
Youngberries are bramble fruit that are seriously juicy and packed with antioxidants and vitamins such as A, B1 & C.

August to December are strawberry months. The longer sunny days and warm weather are exactly what they need to start producing small white blossoms which eventually turn into strawberries.

Looks like our early crop of beetroot is ready to harvest. Thanks to the recent rains for softening the soil and making this an easy task.
Beetroot can easily be grown in pots or smaller containers during most of the year. Its ready to harvest in approx 9 weeks and is packed with above average vitamins and minerals - one of nature's superfoods!
