Moving from South Africa to the United Kingdom is a huge, exciting life event which requires careful planning by pet owners. We’ve put together this comprehensive guide to guide you all the way along your exciting journey:

Pet Ownership in South Africa and the UK
While about 45% of South African adults own at least one pet, UK pet ownership figures stand at around at 57%! So emigrating to the UK means moving to one of the world’s most pet-friendly countries – a win for your dogs, cats, birds, and bunnies as well as the humans in your family! If you follow these critical steps, your pets will be safely and happily reunited with you in no time:

Preparing for the Move
1. Research and Plan Ahead: Start by familiarising yourself with the pet import requirements for the UK. There are specific rules you need to follow in order to move your pets from South Africa to the UK.
2. Choose a qualified IPATA Pet Shipper: All pet transport companies are definitely not created equal! (You don’t want to end up with a below-standard / too small pet travel container that will be rejected at the airport. Or get a last-minute message that the price you were originally quoted has gone up. Or have to deal with incorrect / missing travel documents that could see your pet being returned to South Africa.)
3. Microchip and Vaccinate: Ensure your pet is microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. Microchips must be implanted before the rabies vaccinations, with a waiting period of 30 days after the vaccination to have a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT). Pets can travel 90 days (Keringa-Petwings prefers to work on 92 days just to be safe) after the RNATT.
4. Health Certificate: You need to obtain a pet health certificate from your vet. This document is crucial for entry into the UK and must be issued within 10 days of travel.
• Non-Commercial for cats is valid for 10 days. Non-Commercial for dogs is valid for 5 days due to the Internal Parasite treatment. Commercial for both dogs and cats is valid for 48 hours.
5. Internal Parasite Treatment: Dogs only.
6. Approved Travel Routes: Make sure that your pet transport company uses an approved travel route to ensure that your pet’s entry into the UK is smooth and compliant with regulations.

The Journey
1. Comfortable Carrier: Travel kennels need to comply with IPATA (International Pet & Animal Transportation Association), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and your chosen airline carrier regulations.
2. Hydration and Food: The right pet transport company will supply and attach stainless steel water and food bowls in their containers, which will be topped up by airline staff on their journey. Before putting pets into their kennels, we recommend giving them a light meal a few hours before departure to avoid travel sickness.

Settling in the UK
1. Once you arrive in the UK, these steps will help your pet adjust to their new environment:
2. Routine: Establish a feeding and exercise routine similar to the one you had in South Africa.
3. Vet Visit: Schedule a visit to a local vet to ensure your pet is healthy and to get advice on any local health concerns.
4. Exploration: Allow your pet to explore their new home first and then the neighbourhood, a few steps at a time.
