The Challenge of the Flat-Faced Dog 🐹

Brachycephalic or flat-faced dogs have compromised airways and generally have to work a lot harder to breathe. This means they struggle with:
HEAT
STRESS
EXCITEMENT

This includes the following breeds:
1) MOST IMPORTANT: ENGLISH BULLDOGS!!!!
2) Frenchies
3) Pugs
4) Boston Terriers
5) Staffies (occasionally when very excited)

Summer months are harder for them due to the high ambient temperatures.

These are a few things you can do to help them cope with travelling and vet visits in the summer months:

1) When booking a routine non-emergency appointment, try to book it at a cooler time of day; early mornings or late afternoons.

2) If your dog is calmer in your car away from other dogs then let reception know you are here and stay with them in the car WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING ON.

3) On hot days do not walk around the car park in the sun.

4) If your dog’s breathing is loud or getting louder then inform reception so they can call a nurse to assess and move you to an air-conditioned consultation room. If the nurse is at all concerned they will take your dog to the back for oxygen and to cool them down.

5) The MOST stressful/exciting place for a dog is in the reception waiting room. If you know your brachycephalic dog gets excited, then it is best to start with them somewhere quieter or less stimulating.

6) If you have an English Bulldog inform reception on arrival so we can put them somewhere quiet and cool before they get excited.

It is always easier to prevent problems rather than having to fix them 😎

SLOBBERY KISSES FROM SWITZERLAND ❤🐶🐾🇨🇭

Thank you, Toby, Paul and Joanne, for your beautiful message and the 'pawsome' photos 😍

"Toby arrived by road last Wednesday evening, via Dubai and Zurich. He was very stiff and a bit bewildered, but very happy to see his 'pawrents'. The agent who drove him 2.5 hours from Zurich was such a caring person. The care he received from Keringa-Petwings was outstanding. Great feedback from Nivesh all through the process. We are very happy customers.

Toby has settled into his new life better than we could have hoped for. Great peace of mind for us! He is handling the elevator, the stairs and all the slopes with ease and confidence. And we think all the exercise will only benefit those hips.

He loves the park and all the new dog sniffs but has yet to learn their French translations. A luxury sofa bed will arrive any day now, and then he will be truly set.

Tomorrow, we have an appointment at the local vet to get him registered and officially licensed (even the pups pay tax in Switzerland!)

We have yet to try a ride on the bus and the train. And we still have to see how he handles a long, cold winter. But our apartment is cosy, and spacious enough. He loves going out on the balcony and surveying his kingdom from one floor up! All in all, it has been a superb start. Sending slobbery kisses 🐾🐾" - Paul & Joanne Johnston
