To be eligible for the draw simply drop off your donation at Eastern Vet Hospital or at the SPCA Kempton Park to have your name entered for our lucky draws!

The untold truths about the SPCA and why they need more public support.

The SPCA was established in 1955 to protect and care for abandoned animals, help prevent cruelty to animals and educate communities on proper animal care. Many rural communities do not have access to animal clinics leading to an over-population of pets, stray animals, abuse and disease.

The SPCA’s mandate is centred around the Five Freedoms these Freedoms are internationally recognised as being the most basic of animal rights that must be maintained regardless of the person, society, or their diplomatic ties.

The Five Freedoms are the following:
- Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigour.
- Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
- Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
- Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
- Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

It is important to bear in mind that cruelty is not always cruelty. It could be simple ignorance. Some pet parents although they love their animals have no idea of how to properly care for their pet/s. Instead of confiscating the animal the SPCA will educate the owner in how to properly take care of their fur child rather than simply confiscating the animal.

That outcome is not going to help the owner or the pet because it is so easy to obtain a new pet from anywhere and they will still not know how to properly care for that animal.

In December 2021 the SPCA Germiston Bedfordview released some devastating numbers revealing that a total of 300 animals had either been picked up as strays, surrendered by their families or confiscated from their owners in December 2021 alone. With only 20 adoptions taking place in the same month.

The SPCA has always come under fire for its euthanasia policy especially from the Pro – Life Movement stating that all animals have a right to live. Which in an ideal world isn’t wrong, but their quality of life while they are kept alive is paramount.

Stuffing 30 animals in a small cage due to the overwhelming number of animals that come in and so very few being adopted will likely save them from being euthanased but ultimately these animals are and will suffer.

It is far better to have the option of humane euthanasia, than keep them alive in the very conditions that cause them stress in the first place. Overcrowding, poor food and water quality and very little or no human contact, I wouldn’t want to ‘live’ in those conditions.

The saying goes you can't pick your family (or your in-laws🫣) but you can choose your new best friend! These special kittens are looking for their new forever homes and they can't wait to meet you!

Our adoption fee is R850.00 and will cover your new furbaby's 1st vaccination and also sterilisation. If you would like to come and meet our kittens please give us a ring on 011 970 1684 or alternatively send an email to [email protected] or [email protected].

All the kittens shown in this post would do well in a multi cat household if introduced slowly to the rest of the 4 legged family. 😁
