🐴Tetanus🐴

- Tetanus is caused by Clostridium Tetani and it affects the nervous system of a horse🦠🦠.
- Horses and humans are the most sensitive to contract Tetanus.
- C. Tetani can be found anywhere in the soil or even intestinal tract of horses.
- Horses normally get infected with this bacteria through open wounds🩸

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include generalized stiffness, jaw-, neck, and limb muscles, as well as the region close to the wound. Severe spasms and painful to touch start a day after stiffness. Sweating is common, and later on, "sawhorse" stance develops🏋‍♂️.

- 80% of animals will die due to respiratory failure ☠️

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and history. Recent trauma.
- Samples can be collected and sent away to the laboratory.

Treatment:💉
- Prevention is better!!! Only supportive treatment, toxoid injection (vaccination) and antibiotic treatment🔫.

Prevention:✋️✋️
- Vaccination is the best way to prevent this disease from occurring.

🐶Canine Distemper Virus🐕

- Distemper virus attacks the respitatory, digestive, and most importantly, the nervous system of dogs😷.
- All ages are susceptible to distemper but puppies younger than 4 months and unvaccinated dogs are more at risk.🐩🐩

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include lethargy, discharge from the eyes and nose🤧, fever, nervous signs like head tilt, muscle twitches, drooling, "jaw chewing", hardening of the foot pad and nose🐽 area etc.

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and history, samples can be collected and sent away to the laboratory.

- There are no direct treatment for distemper virus. Only supportive treatment.

Prevention:✋️✋️
- Vaccination is the only way to prevent this disease from occurring.

If animals survive the distemper virus, they may have permanent neurological defects

🐄 Babesia Bigemina/Bovis (Afrika rooiwater en Asiatiese rooiwater) 🐂

- 🔴Redwater is a protozoal disease that is transmitted to cattle by ticks (Bloubosluise - R. Microplus and R. Decoloratus)🪳

- Cattle are mostly affected during rainfall seasons when the temperature and parasite loads are high.🌦🌦🌦

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include lethargy, anemia(pale/white mucous membranes), HIGH fever(40°C+)🤒, light/dark brown urine🟫.

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is performed at the hospital by performing a bloodsmear.

Treatment:💉
- Imidocarb (Babex/Forray) / Diminazine (Berenil)
- Vit Bco/Kyro B+Liver
- Anti-inflammatories
- Supportive treatment - Shade, fresh cold water and ad lib food

Prevention:✋️✋️
- If Redwater is a problem on your farm, vaccination is advised.
- Do not dip calves

🐏 Haemonchus Contortus (Haarwurm/Barber pole worm) 🐏

- Haarwurm feed on blood through the abomasal wall

- Haarwurm is the most resistant worm pathogen to commercialy available products in South Africa.

- The most infected animals are SHEEP, but goats, wildlife and cattle can also be affected

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include lethargy, anemia(pale/white mucous membranes), poor body condition score, protein loss(kwak keël), diarhoea signs and even death if not treated🤕🤒

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is performed at the hospital by performing a feacal floatation to identify the eggs or post mortally by identifying the worms.🪱

Treatment:💉
- Due to the super resistant nature, it is important to start by breeding 'resistant' animals, that could live with these worms and not be affected.
This concept can only be performed by intensive evaluation of animals and by using the FAMACHA system, only deworm selective animals when needed. (FAMACHA chart will be attached)
- Most commercialy available dewormer products will cover haarwurm.

Prevention:✋️✋️
- Do not let animals graze in vleilands or stagnant water areas in summer months
- After deworming animals, do not change camps for at least 2 weeks.
- Use Famacha system in treatment protocol.
- Pooled samples every 3 months can be collected and an egg count can be performed at the hospital, to help you know what the herd status is.

🐈Feline Leukemia virus(FELV)/Cat leukemia 🐈‍⬛️

- FELV is caused by a virus that is transmitted by cats, grooming and licking each other.
- Saliva is the main transport agent

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include lethargy, anemia, fever, swollen lymphnodes, chronic weightloss, poor appetite, poor coat and gingivitis or persistently ill🤕🤒

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is performed at the hospital with a rapid Snap test, results within 10 minutes.

Treatment:💉
- There is no treatment for FELV. Unfortunately, cats that exhibit clinical signs have a poor quality of life, and euthanasia would be best to prevent the pet from suffering.
Euthanasia also prevents the spread of the disease to other animals.

Prevention:✋️✋️

- VACCINATION, VACCINATION.
The hospital vaccination protocol includes the FELV vaccine in the second vaccination of a cat due to the high prevalence of FELV in our area.(@10 - and 14 weeks of age)
- Keep unvaccinated cats indoors until fully vaccinated
- Test rescue cats brought into a new environment first.

Prognosis:
- Depends on patients' immunity and degree of infection, but the virus affects the animals in such a way that the quality of life is poor.🦠

🐎African horse sickness (Perdesiekte)

- With summer and the rainy season in full swing, it is important to be super cautious with a disease like AHS.🌦🌦🌦

- AHS is an infections but a non-contagious arthropod-borne viral disease that affects horses, mules and donkeys. AHS has 9 different strains/serotypes.

- AHS mostly affects the pulmonary(lungs🫁)-and cardiac(heart🫀) organs

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include lethargy, fever, swollen face, swallow breathing, discharge from nostrils and high mortality rates 🤕🤒

Routes of transmission:
- AHS is a non-contagious viral disease that is spread by midges(muggies🦟Cullicoides).

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is based on vaccination status, clinical signs and time of year.
- Blood samples can be collected and send to a laboratory for conformation.

Treatment:💉
- Anti-biotic medication to prevent secondary infections
- Anti-inflammatories to treat the fever
- Cardiac supportants
- Vitamins and minerals
- Supportive treatment that includes SHADE, FRESH WATER and FEED☂️💧🌱

Prevention:✋️✋️

- VACCINATION, VACCINATION.
1.OBP AHS vaccine
- Stable horses between dusk and dawn to reduce the exposure to midges
- The use of insect repellents can be advantageous
- Monitor your horses Temperature🌡 twice daily.
- DON'T let animals graze vlei's/near dams/rivers/stagnant water during summer months when midges numbers are high.

Prognosis:
- Depends on patients immunity and degree of infection.🦠

‼️ATTENTION‼️NB (rising temperatures)

Heat stroke/Hyperthermia🥵

This is the increase in the core body temperature of an animal. We are seeing a lot of these cases lately with the heat waves experienced in our area.

This increase can be caused by 3 major aspects:
1. Being sick (fever)
2. Increase in environmental temperature
3. The inability of brachycephalic dogs (short nose) to cool down effectively🐶

Animals that are more likely to suffer from heat stroke include brachycephalic dogs, obese (fat), and darker colour (black) dogs🛑.

Clinical signs:
-Hyperventilating(increased breathing)
-Seizuring
-Warm on feel (T of 40+)
-Thick foam from mouth with panting
-Muscle tremors
-Fatique and depression

These symptoms are normally seen after a history of hot days, animals being outside, or maybe exercised in the heat.☀️☀️

❗️Do not wait long to seek veterinary assistance once an animal experiences these clinical symptoms because the organs can start to shut down.❗️

Treatment:
1. Keep the animal calm
2. Wet a towel and throw it over the animal to aid in the cooling down process
3. Rush the animal to a veterinarian to aid with stabilization

Prevention:
1. Avoid exercise in heat / far walks
2. Do not leave a pet in the car
3. Fresh water every day
4. Add a 2L freezed bottle into the water bowl on super hot days
5. Provide a cooling mat, especially for brachycephalic dogs
6. Provide constant shading

Dystocia in cattle🐄 (Calving difficulty)

Stages of normal calving:
💥Stage 1:
- Cervix dialation, va**nal discharges and the cow will separate from the herd and may be restless
💥Stage 2:
- Contractions start and the 'water breaks', the calf starts to enter birth canal and the delivery of calf should last for up to 2 hours.
💥Stage 3:
- The placenta is delivered within 8 hours after birth, more than 12-24 hours is considered retained placenta and intervention is needed.

So a dystocia is when it is impossible for the cow to deliver the calf on her own, and needs assistance🛑.

Causes of dystocia🚩 :
1.Disposition of calf
2.Too large calf (normally seen with heifers)
3.Twins
4.Uterine torsion
5.Overconditioned cows

How to diagnose a dystocia⏳️:
- Stage 2 (calf delivery) should be completed within 2 hours, if this stage is prolonged without any progress in delivery it is considered a dystocia.

Treating dystocia➰️:
- Herd the cow slowly to the crush. Using sterile gloves and lots of sterile lubricant, feel if the calf's head and both front feet are in the birth canal.
- If the feet and head are in the birth canal, ropes may be used to try and pull the calf gently.
- If you do not have any progress within 5 minutes of pulling - contact your veterinarian for assistance.

- Important notes to remember:

- ☝️Feel if the calf is still alive or dead-Finger on tongue of calf or pressure on claws.
- ☝️If the calf is still alive and delivery is impossible through the va**na, a cesarean section should then be performed to remove the calf.
- ☝️If the calf is dead, it is best to remove the calf from the va**na by means of foetotomy.

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is based on vaccination status, clinical signs and time of year.
- Blood samples can be collected and send to a laboratory for conformation.

Treatment:💉
- Anti-biotic medication to prevent secondary infections
- Anti-inflammatories to treat the fever
- Supportive treatment that includes SHADE, FRESH WATER and FEED☂️💧🌱
- Rumen restoring and supportive medication.
- Valuable animals can be admitted in hospital and placed on a drip for intravenous fluids and medication.

Prevention:✋️✋️
