🐈 Feline panleukopenia 😺

- Panleukopenia is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that has recently been diagnosed again after a few years of extinction in the Kosh area🏢

- Feline Panleukopenia is cause by a virus called feline parvovirus (FPV)🦠🦠.

- Kittens are most severely affected, especially unvaccinated kittens, but sick and adult cats can also be affected💨💨.

- The FPV attacks all the rapid dividing cells in the kittens body, like bone marrow, intestinal cells, lymphnodes, etc., causing the depletion of white blood cells (panleukopenia).

-This virus is spread through the environment by any bodily fluids of an affected cat and the mother can pass it to the unborn kittens as well.

- Clinical signs include diahroea, vomition, lethargic, loss of appetite, fever and painful abdomen 🤧

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and history.
- Blood works and histopathology 🩸.

Treatment:💉
- 90% of affected kittens will die
- Treatment of these patients normally includes only supportive treatment protocol.

Prevention:✋️✋️
- Vaccination is the best way to prevent this disease from occurring.
- This virus is included in the 3 in 1 vaccine available at KDH.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO VACCINATE YOUR KITTEN @ 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 12 weeks of age, and adult cats yearly.

Please be aware that the season for snakes has started again.
Keep your dogs on a leash when walking and only walk on roads that can be clearly seen and avoid bushy areas.

In case of your pet being bitten by a snake: Call your veterinarian immediately! If possible to do so safely, take a picture of the snake for identification.

Please do not wash or touch the wound of a snake bite.

What does this screening entail? This screening is a series of diagnostic steps to determine the overall health and well-being of your pet (cat or dog) older than 7 years.
What is includes:
- Full clinical examination
- Heart evaluation

🐶Kennel cough🐕

‼️NB‼️ This vaccine is not part of the yearly vaccinations, so please make sure your dogs are vaccinated for kennel cough.

- In the last month, we saw a massive increase in the incidence of Kennel cough under our dog population in Kosh🏢

- Kennel cough is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica, but most dogs are affected with a virus first like canine adenovirus, canine distemper virus, canine herpes virus, canine influenza virus, parainfluenza virus and canine reovirus (Most of these are the common viruses that is in the 5in1 vaccine)🦠🦠.

- Dogs contract this bacteria and viruses through air💨💨.

- Weather conditions such as constant wind, cold temperatures and dust increase the chances for Kennel cough to be spread.

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include persistent couging (classic goose honking sound), sneezing, runny nose and eye discharge.🤧

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and history.
- Bloodsmears and blood works🩸.

Treatment:💉
- Antibiotics, supportive treatment, nebulization and using harness instead of collar
- Kennel cough normally takes between 1 to 3 weeks to clear up with medication.

Prevention:✋️✋️
- Vaccination is the best way to prevent this disease from occurring. This vaccine is different to the normal yearly vaccination.

🐴Tetanus🐴

- Tetanus is caused by Clostridium Tetani and it affects the nervous system of a horse🦠🦠.
- Horses and humans are the most sensitive to contract Tetanus.
- C. Tetani can be found anywhere in the soil or even intestinal tract of horses.
- Horses normally get infected with this bacteria through open wounds🩸

- Clinical signs that an affected animal might experience include generalized stiffness, jaw-, neck, and limb muscles, as well as the region close to the wound. Severe spasms and painful to touch start a day after stiffness. Sweating is common, and later on, "sawhorse" stance develops🏋‍♂️.

- 80% of animals will die due to respiratory failure ☠️

Diagnosis:🔬
- Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and history. Recent trauma.
- Samples can be collected and sent away to the laboratory.

Treatment:💉
- Prevention is better!!! Only supportive treatment, toxoid injection (vaccination) and antibiotic treatment🔫.

- Vaccination is the best way to prevent this disease from occurring.
