A HONEY SHORTAGE THREAT

A well-known beekeeper said that the current weather pattern could result in a shortage of raw honey in South Africa. A major factor in honey production has been the changing climate, with rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns and extreme weather events, wreaking havoc on many beekeepers and their broods. In South Africa, estimates have beekeepers loosing up to 30% of their hives annually to theft, vandalism, fires, honey badgers, baboons, flooding and, insect infestation.

Irradiated honey. Irradiated honey is honey that has been exposed to radiant energy to kill insects, bacteria, and other food-borne pathogens There is a growing demand for raw honey, and the current deficit is being met by increasing imports. To control diseases, current legislation defines that all imported honey must be irradiated. While the process kills potentially harmful organisms, it may also destroy beneficial enzymes and other microorganisms. South Africa imports Honey primarily from: China, Zambia, India, Turkey, Namibia, Tanzania, and Botswana.

Adulterated honey: The term "adulterated honey" means any honey to which has been added honeydew, glucose, dextrose, molasses, sugar, sugar syrup, invert sugar, or any other similar product or products, other than the nectar of floral exudations of plants gathered and stored in the comb by honeybees.

Fake honey
Dr Janais Delport states the following:
Fake ‘honey’, the work of ‘honey fraudsters’ and often containing no actual honey at all, flies off South African supermarket shelves, while the real deal is often ignored. These counterfeit honeys are usually cheaper than authentic ones because of how they are “produced”, In some cases, these fake products are not honey at all but rather inexpensive syrups that are shamelessly sold as pure honey.

LOCAL RAW HONEY VERSUS IMPORTED HONEY

Most Honey on South African retailers’ shelves are imported honey. It is said that roughly 60% of South Africa’s honey is imported. Imports are being done from various countries, such as Uruguay, India, Zambia, China etc. Approximately 80% of the imported honey is mass imported from China. This is often mixed with South African local honey.
By law and regulated by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), honey imported to South Africa is a controlled good and must be irradiated as a preventative measure against honeybee pests and diseases.
Irradiated Honey, also known as radurised honey’ is treated with ionizing radiation. This process is used to kill bacteria, spores, moulds, microsporidia, and other contaminants that might be present in the honey. The goals of irradiating honey include reducing insect and microbial presence and reducing the spread of microorganisms between bee colonies IN South Africa.

That said – the irradiating process does cause loss in the nutritional and beneficial properties of the honey
Raw honey is a supersaturated solution of sugars, enriched with proteins, minerals, vitamins, organic acids and polyphenols.

Is raw honey more expensive than irradiated honey?
Yes, generally you can expect to pay more for raw honey in South Africa, obviously there are exceptions, such as buying raw honey from Oom Jan’s honey wagon on the corner of Robert Broom Street in Noordheuwel, Krugersdorp. Only raw honey produced and packaged by local beekeepers and honey sellers are stocked and sold from there.
On the other hand, honey imported in bulk from countries like China and being irradiated is often much cheaper. But no longer has the 100% health benefits compared to raw honey
