The population of the chattering lory (Lorius garrulus) has undergone dramatic declines mostly due to exploitation for the cage-bird trade followed by a great loss of habitat. This family of parrots tops the list of the parrot species when it comes to trapping for the bird trade both for the domestic and the foreign market. These birds used to be a common sight in Halmahera and surroundings islands but now became very rare. During a weeklong trip I conducted few months ago this year the sightings of these Lories were few and far in between and mostly “fly-overs”.
