Some weeks are better than others and some are worse for different reasons. The last two have been filled with loss. Loss of one of the most special dogs I have ever had the privilege of knowing and loss for different reasons with humans. When sadness and joy are in conflict with eachother… tomorrow is another day

So happy and excited to have this super filly here with me. Rivendell Belafonte is by Rivendell Beregond x Highflyer x Rivendell Wangu! Thank you to owner and breeder Debra-Lyn Nagel for entrusting her to me. Looking forward to adding her to my string of magnificent mares!

Bert Rutten talks about good training:
“The hard thing for a young horse, and the most important thing, is balance and rhythm, that they learn to stay with you, and you can bring your hand forward and they don’t take off with you. You put your leg on, and they are not scared of your leg, they have respect for your leg, but they shouldn’t be scared. When they have space to go to in the front, and with time, these horses learn more and more to go into the contact, but that takes time, and I don’t think you should force that on a four or five-year-old.”

Magnificence personified! I just can’t get enough of this young stallion Rivendell Dior, whose full sister was born this week. He is by imported frozen semen of the premium stallion Diamonit (Diamond Hit x Santander) out of Dageraad Britta (Lingh x Osmium). Can’t wait to start backing him in 2025. He finds moving so easy and is so supple and athletic.

🐴❄️DEBUNKING WINTER HORSE-CARE MYTHS 1: "If I’m cold, my horse must be cold."❄️🐴

Not necessarily. The equine digestive system was designed to generate body heat, and horses have a natural thermal blanket in their hair coat. Tim Strathman, DVM, of Equine Medical Associates in Lexington, Kentucky, explains that once days start getting shorter in the fall, a horse’s coat increases in both length and density. It also has the ability to fluff out in cold weather, trapping a layer of air in the coat to provide an extra layer of insulation.

“Horses have a tremendous ability to acclimate to their environment when given the opportunity,” he said. “Unfortunately, many of the things we do with them interfere with that opportunity to acclimate, such as keeping them in barns, clipping, blanketing and various feeding routines.”

If adequate food, water and optional shelter from the wind are provided, Strathman said most horses are often happier and healthier outside—even in harsh winter conditions.

“Here in Kentucky, you see bands of broodmares outside in all weather, and they're generally better for it. You’ll occasionally see a blanket on one, but usually it’s a special-needs case,” he noted. “Even when they have access to large run-in sheds, more often than not they choose to stand outside, even when it’s 20 degrees below zero. That’s what they naturally choose as being best for them.”

Note, however, that older equines, clipped horses or those with compromised immune systems, an inability to grow a winter coat or other health conditions might have different blanketing needs than healthy horses. If you're ever in doubt, double-check with your vet.
